Not arguing that it's not expensive, but some people value their time over their money.
I bought the Hecatomb set a couple weeks back to use on a character simply because I didn't want to spend months doing nothing but farming to get him kitted out the way I wanted. I consider $12.50 (what I paid) a not altogether unfair price given that I can now play content that I want to play instead of spending months grinding the same mission(s) over and over again. |
One of the major things I like about this game, is that it's a lot less strict in the requirements of what you need to join something. Often you can just jump into the fray without much worry about level or gear requirements. I also like that it's a lot less focussed on endless grinds, although all MMOs have those to some degree.
I have more money than time, and do buy things like this on the PM as well. I'm figuring that in that way I might reach Tier 9 before the game goes offline and actually have some fun playing it instead of grinding for inf. I can then spend what little inf. I have on the stuff I can't buy. In the mean time my euros go to supporting the continued development of this game.
I could just play with basic IOs or SOs instead but I just discovered Mid's and find that building and designing a character is a lot of fun.
Basically to me 1000 points is lunch money, while a billion inf. would take days and days of grinding which also could be spent enjoying the game on my current character or playing an alt.
To me 1000 points is easier to get than 10 million inf. I will never use sites that would sell in game currency, I never have in the other MMOs I've played, but if Paragon allows me to send them a little money so I can enjoy the game more, then I think everybody wins.
And to those saying that it's unfair competition: This game isn't a competition, and there is no way to "win" it. And these enhancements are inferior to the ones you get in game, so if feeling "better" is important to you, then you still can.
I'd much rather enjoy the game than spend time grinding for inf.

That is actually the reason behind the way CoH is designed - as part of the proper comicbook feel, it had to allow all types of superheroes to team up, no matter what their origins or power levels were like - so Hulks and Black Widows are all equally useful in missions.

The point is that it doesn't mean that Black Widows are useless. Black Widow can still clear a room full of bad guys, even if she doesn't do it in 20 seconds like the Hulk.

I believe they've said they're never going to sell PvP IOs.
So... mid-August, at the soonest. |
When this game dies and there are no pvp ios to be bought, I'll believe it.
Wouldn't PvP IOs be ok, as they can also be earned in the game?

I'd personally rather see PvP IOs on the market than regular purples; regular purples I can get without participating in an anemic, unbalanced and forgotten part of the game that even the devs don't care about anymore.
Plus, one of the reasons a lot of people aren't PvPing in the first place is the perception that everyone else in the zone will be fully kitted out with PvP IOs and if you're not, there's no hope of winning. And if you can't win, you can't get your own PvP IOs, so you can't win, so you can't get your own PvP IOs, so you can't win, so you can't get your own PvP IOs... putting a few out there for the unwashed masses might give zone PvP a shot in the arm.
Of course, then the whole "pay to win" argument actually becomes credible*, even if only a little, so I can see why it's not happening.
*not that all store-bought IO sets don't help some in PvP, but who actually PvPs?
FUN FACT: That burst of light when you level up is actually the effectiveness escaping from your enhancements all at once.
It seems some like the idea and others don't. Who would've guessed?!!
Mother, did it need to be so high?

Are purchased IO sets +boostable?
No?
PASS!
edit: I find it odd that IO's -and- boosters are being sold however they DON'T work with eachother...
Ignoring anyone is a mistake. You might miss something viral to your cause.
Mother fixes everyone - especally those -bad- children who think that Mother doesn't love them.

Note to self: Make Praetor Tillman a Mother's Day card so she doesn't squish my invulnerability tanker's brain.

On first blush, I didn't like seeing purple enhancements on the market. But... as some have pointed out, other than PvP, we aren't competing against each other. So if Captain Avenger 2.4 wants to buy a purple set as opposed to waiting (and waiting, and waiting...) to get random drops, who am I to say he can't?
I won't purchase them, but that's my decision, because for me it's more fun to earn them in-game, whether that be through random drops, hero merits, empyrean merits, playing the market wisely, or whatever. To each their own.

The current microtransaction craze in online gaming may seem normal now, but people like you need to remember that it is a recent phenomenon. In the past, subscription was the only way to play and there was no official way to spend more money to advance in the game more quickly. There were sound reasons for these limits; breaking them is bad for the game. If players can spend money to win they have no reason to stay loyal. They have less skill, have put in less effort so they value their accomplishments less, and they can easily switch to another Pay-to-win game. The turnover in Pay-to-win games is so high that it would make a game manager from the year 2000 crap their pants.
But today's game developers don't care about managing their game competently, they care more about maximizing their revenue. That's why Pay-to-win has become commonplace, and why the average gamer bounces between three or four games a year instead of staying loyal to just one. CoX is trying to walk a thin line, allowing some Pay-to-win exchanges but hoping that their players stay loyal. I expect them to fail someday. They can't juggle their players conflicting urges forever. |
I also play the game because I like the community and I have many friends that I play with and that I have referred to the game. I dont play ANY other MMo that requires a subcript fee. I have voiced this before and I will do so again: I refuse to pay more than one sub fee for an MMO. CoX is my preferred MMO. The day I leave is the day PS does something I really dont agree with and that will be my final days with CoX and possibly anything else they decide to make in the future, as I am one of those customers you rub the wrong way, you'll never have to worry about seeing another penny from me ever again...
A friend has suggested that the Mother's Day sale should have been the Controller AT, Praetorian content and the Super Tailor so all female characters could be as... impressive as Mother.

If you want scary, Hyperstrike's mom is about as scary as they come.
The only force in the universe that could even slow her down was her own mother (herself a miniaturized entity composed of omniverse-annihilating levels of rage and fear).
I've fought gods, would-be gods, things gods fear, and stuff THOSE things fear. I've squared off against things that make strong men go pale and fill their shorts.
But square off against Mom? Pfft. No thanks!
I'd rather douse myself in lighter fluid and assault the gates of Hell with a bucket of jet fuel. THAT at least is doable.
Or maybe shield someone from a nuclear explosion by bear-hugging the bomb. Yeah. MUCH less painful and humiliating.
I never obeyed my mother because I was a good boy. I wasn't.
But I obeyed.
Why?

Pay to Win : Using legal tender to purchase in-game advantage.
So, using cash on costume parts is not pay to win, but using cash on enhancements is. Supporting RMT'ers is definitely pay to win, as well as being 'illegal' in the context of the game.
For my part, I don't see it as a pejorative term in the context of the Paragon Market, as any profits realized go directly to the game's bottom line- I'm all for the game surviving and thriving and they can sell whatever they want on the market to that end.
