The Wings

Okay, guys, I'm back.

And I'm really mad.

I suppose mad isn't the right word. More like disappointed.

I really want one of the Tier 9 VIP reward costume set pieces. Namely, the Phoenix Wings. They would fit so many of my characters, and open up a world of new possibilities. Now, I'm not here begging for a dev to hand me a set. Nor am I asking for them to be given out. All I want is an option to buy them. I don't care how much they charge.

I don't like being unable to ever get something. The whole rest of the game is purchasable. I have looked at the calender, and I determined that I won't reach tier 9 fast enough to select the wings before they are cycled out.

All I am asking for is a way to buy them. A way so that people who have spent two years (almost three, come this June) can get some of the best looking pieces in the game. I have done the math. At $15 a month, for two years and 11 months, I have spent $525 on this game alone, not including the purchase of every single pack that came out during that time frame. I just want a way to finish my costumes, and watching the time run out on this set is killing me.

So, please, devs and forum mods, try to make it possible for us to buy the sets being cycled out. If it is 400 PP for the Phoenix wings alone, I will spend my month's worth of PP on them. I don't like not being able to get something, and this will make it a lot less depressing every time I see someone with the wings.

Thank you for reading this.

Fire and Ice is staying for now alongside Mecha in i23.

Celestial will be available 'via other means' once it's rotated out so the Fire and Ice pieces will no doubt follow the same model.

From what I understand, they're merely "Disney Vaulting" the Celestial set.

At rock's quoted veteran status of "two years, almost three" that's still not enough time for him to reach T9 status. T9 is approximately equivalent to the old 7 year veteran status, excluding Paragon Points purchases and a SINGLE boxed edition of anything, so we're still looking at another four to five years or another ~$700 spent on the Market.

T9 VIP stuff is highly unattainable to most people who aren't long-term VIPs, or close to it.

Well, you get a token every month now, instead of a vet badge every 3, so it should be faster than 4-5 years, but unfortunately still probably too slow to reach t9 before Fire & Ice is rotated out.

Celestial will supposedly be available via another method at some point after it's cycled out. If Fire & Ice follows suit, the Phoenix wings will eventually be obtainable without being a t9 VIP. We don't yet know what that method is, though. The point is, the exclusivity won't last forever.

True, true, but you need a lot of tokens to make Tier 9. I forget how many I had, but I believe I had ~45 when the system launched and that just barely got my foot into T9. You're right that it's probably closer to $400-$500, but it's still a long time and/or a lot of money.

The poll they sent out via GMOTD actually had this as a question. I forget the exact wording, but I voted that I want to see VIP exclusive items exist, but that these become available to everybody after a certain period of time. I don't know if that also includes T9 VIP stuff since that's to VIP players what VIP stuff is to Freemium players, but I hope it does. I do genuinely want to see T9 VIP stuff become widely available to everyone after a certain time.

I also want to see Super Pack costume purchasable directly, but that's a whole other barrel of monkeys.

34 tokens are required to unlock the VIP Tier 9.

Until Freedom launched, you only got one token per three months. I am still over $400 from getting T9.

>$400 doesn't sound right. Even if all of your 2y11mo was pre-Freedom, and you've never bought points, you should still have, um... 15 reward tokens? 1 to start, 11 vet badges, 2 yearly badges, 1 retail code. So 19 more tokens to reach t9, plus let's count the 1 token to get the wings, 20 x $15 each = $300. Slightly less if you buy points in larger bundles/buy multiple months at a time.

Granted, that's not a big improvement over $400...

Yes, I did do the math improperly there. However, my point was not the money, as I do not wish to buy any months. The point was that, for those of us who just pay VIP, we will need to wait a huge amount of time to be eligible to get the amazing rewards, but they won't be available when we do so. Honestly, I am fine waiting, but it won't help if the rewards are being cycled out.

And there was my issue.

Vagueness about when and how the rewards are coming back should have been clarified before now.

But it worked out for them I guess. I dropped like $350 in one week in points to finish off 3 accounts to Tier 9 and learned the limitations of each point bundle. Self high five.

I remember years ago, I SOOOO wanted the Boxing outfit available via Vet Rewards. Sadly, I was still about 1.5 years away until I reached that vet reward status. It was a long wait, but I was really happy when I finally got them.

Be thankful you can buy your way up to T9 now.

To be honest, I've always thought this was how the T9 costumes should work. T9 VIPs get access to them without having to pay anything extra and ahead of everyone else, then when they're cycled out after however many months everyone else gets a chance to buy them.

That said, I'm not sure that's what the question on the poll was asking. I read it as asking if they should start adding things onto the paragon market that were only purchasable to VIPs. Personally I'm ok with that only so long as the VIPs are just getting a chance to purchase the items before the premium players.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I answered, as well. I don't believe in perpetual exclusivity, just temporary such. We, as VIPs, get to buy the stuff early and possibly at a discount, but eventually everyone else can have it. I'd say that's a win for VIP and Premium players alike. Probably not for Free players, but then nothing in the store is a win for them.

This is the way the discussion went at the Pummit, which was likely the inspiration for the question.

The free-fridays thing would be a win for them

I don't really get the logic of this argument. How would this allow you to "prove" it?

Saying you want to use the wings/costume items is fine, but... saying you want them to lower the requirements because you want to "prove" you're as big of a fan as 8 year veterans doesn't make sense to me.

The t9s will still be accessible in the future, and, quite likely, will be easier to get for the non-veterans once they've been rotated out.

I've never liked the exclusivity concept. I didn't like it when I was a couple months behind the people who had been around since beta, and I don't like it now when I'm showing a friend a costume and they can't use the pieces themselves because they haven't been around long enough.

I've since bought my way to tier 9 because I wanted to use a couple of the celestial pieces, and I'm not complaining about that; it was my decision. I don't care about the money involved for me. But it sucked when I couldn't do anything about getting a cool new vet thing like being able to use travel powers early, because I'd never heard of the game or the company until months after it was released.

It bothers me that the work's been done to develop the costume set, and here's a subscriber that wants to use it, but it would cost him three hundred dollars to get it.

While I certainly sympathise with your situation, I cannot agree with this argument. At all. You "prove" you're a fan either by buying from the company or by staying with the company. The proof of the fan is in the commitment, and so long as there is going to be any point to tracking veteran status, then lowering the bars of commitment is just missing the point.

I really don't mind you having access to the Fire and Ice costume set, but I can't agree with your desire to prove you're as big a fan as those of us who've spent a few thousand dollars on the game and stuck with it for eight years through Jack Emmert's antics, through when the studio was cut down to 15 people, through name changes and outages and all of that.

There's the item, which as far as I'm concerned you can have. I don't believe in exclusivity. And then there's status, which I'm much less willing to just hand out.

I've heard conflicting stories. Some say they'll be cycled back in, others say they may eventually end up cycled into the general market. I'm a T9 VIP and not only am I fine with the latter option, I'd prefer it.

My understanding of it is that the set will be made available to all in the near future.

Exactly how near is anyone's guess, but I very much doubt that they wont be available to buy at some point ... erm ... 'soon'

Originally the devs were saying that the T9 VIP stuff would be cycled back into the T9 VIP slot, but more recently they've been saying they'd be made available through 'other means'. So basically the devs may have changed their minds, and I'm really ok with that as it's (hopefully) a change for the better.

As a T9 VIP player I'd much rather the costume sets be something I get access to for free in advance of other players than have the stuff be seen as some sort of status symbol or as something awesome and yet hopelessly out of reach.

I'm gona want clarification from the devs before I23, let me tell you.

Then go ask for it in this thread: http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=288554
However, clarification may not be possible (yet), since as of 4-24, Hit Streak said they were still deciding what the alternate method would be.
