If you were a dev...
Thanks for a good, civil start - and yeah, I already see one "Yep, I'd hate you for that" from me. (SAAAAAMMMMMM!)

Oh, I have another one: I'd scrap the current base builder entirely and instead reinstitute one based around building structures out of solid cubes, with props for added decoration. This could be done either inside a large hollow chamber or in and outdoor location within limited boundaries. Considering people build some of the most elaborate base structures out of cube stone blocks anyway, this will only add to that.
I'd also make the plot for a base CONSIDERABLY bigger, horizontally and/or vertically. If players want a sprawling outdoor camp, let them have it. If player want a tall multi-storey building, let them have it. I'd also institute a large selection of ready-made indoor rooms and outdoor buildings, and include community-made ones in there available from an interface similar to the Architect one, but with a better rating and search functionality.
I'd also dump all "prestige" purchases and institute SG coffers, instead, where players who wish to help build the base can donate INF directly, with all SG base construction costing INF, rather than prestige. Following that, I'd remove the restriction against inviting offline characters to a SG and instead delegate SG invites to an in-game email.
I'm not sure if people would hate me for this, other than the "dump the editor" business.
Samuel_Tow is the only poster that makes me want to punch him in the head more often when I'm agreeing with him than when I'm disagreeing with him.

I will never understand the idea of nerfing, or how it creates more fun. :/ The game can be made more difficult w/o taking away things people enjoy.
Let me add to the list.
13: I would make it clear that the post 40 game is balanced around IOs, and that the post 50 game is balanced around IOs and Incarnate powers.
Now Aura_Familia would also hate me hehehehehe.
14: Range would actually be defense. For every 10 feet a character is from a mob they would get an add 5% ranged defense. This would be done to add truth to the statement that "range is defense".
Really I think this thread is fun. There is a lot of stuff in here that I would actually love not hate. Really only the nerf items cause any dislike in me at all.

C'mon, Batman and superman wipe the floor with huge mobs all the time. So does Spider-man, and when they're not taking on huge mobs, they're soloing AVs and even multiple AVs at once. The whole point of the Super-Hero genre is to be as ridiculously over-powered as possible.

1. Pre-ED, the game was turning into "The tank herds the room/map/zone, a blaster nukes, we move on." That, as much as some people long for those days, would have killed the game long before now. I know it was boring me to tears. And I was one of the blasters nuking 500 enemies at once.
2. Without the ED/GDN nerfs, there's *no* way we'd have the Invention system we have now. I may not like some of the power creep we've gotten from it (softcapped blasters?) but I *do* like some of the added bonuses we've gotten - like my ranged attacks having a chance to hold, or non damaging powers now able to do damage thanks to procs.
There's basically a danger of either everything becoming too easy (imagine all Dom powers being at pre-nerf, pre-Domination 2.0 Psychic Shockwave levels) or having to ratchet up the difficulty to the point where nobody wants to make new characters because it's too tough, leaving the opening zones dead.

Permanently disable PB's and Energy blast set from anyone that complains about it's KB powers.
The development team and this community deserved better than this from NC Soft. Best wishes on your search.
Oh boy, oh boy.
- Convert all KB into KD. Allow players to slot KB enhancements to convert KD back into KB. Add significant damage to KB effects so that knocking enemies into walls and such actually causes damage.
- Alter the defense and resistance cap system. Nobody would be able to reach soft- or hard-caps without external buffs. Non-melee ATs would selfcap at 20% defense/30% resist. Scrappers/stalkers would selfcap at 30% defense/50% resist, brutes would selfcap at 35% defense/60% resist, and tankers would selfcap at 40% defense/75% resist. This would include all IO set bonuses and self-inspiration use.
- Cap all defense related IO set bonuses at 5% to any value.
- Cap all global recharge at +75%. This would include IO set bonuses, Hasten and all other sources.
- Add a 50% chance for friendly fire to all AoEs. Player characters in a detrimental AoE effect would have a 50% chance of suffering the effect themselves.
- Create failure conditions for all task/strike forces. Oh, you let Dr. Todd die? Moonfire TF failed. Add a 20 hour cooldown for rerunning a failed TF.
- Eliminate all external buff/debuff stacking. Weaker effects shall be overwritten by stronger effects.
- Disallow the creation of characters with names in all caps or all lowercase.

There's so much more, but one has to stop somewhere. |
Okay, off the top of my head, people would hate me for...
- I'd enable Villains and Heroes to travel to each and every zone.
- I'd figure out what further balancing I'd need to do for Vigilantes and Rogues. They may just be vestigial or they'd have benefits... not entirely certain.
- Enabling challenge/accept PvP dueling (solo and teams) for all open zones. There would be an auto-decline option and it would be entirely by choice to ever enter into a duel of any type.
- However, people would hate me just for having to see PvP going on in a regular zone.
- for the record, I never PvP, but I'd like this game to have the option to pummel on each other anywhere and everywhere, should we so choose.
- I'd slow down the day/night cycle.
- I'd make it at least half the speed it is now (that's likely no where near enough... maybe 5 times as slow), but very likely it'd be a lot slower than that.
- Special night spawns would be available elsewhere for the impatient!
I'm sure there are some others... Likely more about shifting the game's baseline dynamics to match a slower, enjoy smelling the roses sort of pace, as opposed to the full team, flash, boom, pow and move to the next spawn pace of today, hehe. As well as plenty of focus on customization and seemingly insignificant virtual reality considerations...
Lastly...
- People would hate me for how happy I was.
and round up everyone that knows more than they do"-Dylan
Most of the stuff that I wanted - but numerous people were strongly opposed to - have already come to pass (side switching and market merge being the main ones). The only things left that I can think of that fall into this category are:
1) Non-unique character names. I'm not sure I'd do it exactly the way Champions does, but definitely something along those lines.
2) Contingent on 1) happening: merge all the servers into one.
I'll go get myself fitted for that noose now.
Completely overhaul SGs, and scrap SG bases. Unless someone is going to pony up the developer time to do SG bases right, we should stop disrespecting the base subcommunity and just yank the plug on them. They're window dressing that serve little to no functionality outside of some small (in)conveniences.
Seriously--when was the last time you opted to rez inside your base?
There are no words for what this community, and the friends I have made here mean to me. Please know that I care for all of you, yes, even you. If you Twitter, I'm MrThan. Ooh, this is a fun idea for a thread. I mean... um... GRR! RAGE! SMASH!
I want to join in on the evil fun!
If I was a Dev and could do something that would make people hate me I would...
Finish Off Mission Architect
No XP, no Inf, only Tickets. Break the promise of "being able to level to 50" in AE, and just kill the farming tool once and for all. The Tickets are kept as a consolation prize.
However, there's a method to the madness. If XP is no longer an concern, then arbitrary limits on ambushes, enemy composition and so on become superfluous and can be removed. Want a mission with only Clockwork Gears and 100 ambushes of them when you click a glowie? Sure! Want to team up with the entire Freedom Phalanx? No problem, and they'll all be full power. By sacrificing XP, you get total freedom to make crazy arcs.
Kill the current PvP
People that like PvP hate I13 PvP. People that don't like PvP haven't changed their opinion. PvP in this game has been a massive failure, which is a shame, since it had potential. But nope, kill it, and re-purpose the zones to give Villains the much needed extra PvE zones.
Again, though, I have a plan. With all the old PvP baggage cleared out, there's an opportunity to remake it. From scratch. Players would have the stats of a Boss when fighting each other, and everything else would work as closely to PvE as possible. New PvP would launch with several objective based gametypes, including the "Why haven't they done this yet?" type of Safeguard vs. Mayhem. Most gametypes would award more kinds of PvP play than just killing dudes.
Make small team/solo versions of the Incarnate Trials
Target would be about four players. They would not generate the same rewards as a raid-size trial, but they'd be pretty good, still. For smaller servers and the people who just don't like raiding. A single team Underground trial would be sweet.
I think that's what I have that isn't too petty or trivial. "More Knockback" is fun, but more knockback where?
So, do you hate my ideas? I should hope so, otherwise I failed. I kind of want to see some of it happen, although maybe not this extreme.

My 1st venue into evil dev of doom is to make my customers pay lots of money or points for useless things like a leperchaun.
I might then start reducing procs in enhancements once they were bought.
And I may use the term "soon" more often..
As my final strike, I may not deliver information until its too late.
NCSOFT may take away our servers and beloved dev team, but they can't break our spirit and community. with all your power, NCSOFT, your victory will be bitter-sweet. I, personally will be there to laugh at you when you face-plant into the ground.

Update all incarnate recipes to include shard based components and then eliminate the thread based components entirely. Shards would become equivalent to Astrals for purchases and NotW equivalent to Emps with costs lowered for the increased difficulty of getting NotW but the WST timegate changed to a daily restriction instead of weekly.
iTrials will still exist but would not reward anything beyond the pleasure of doing iTrials and whatever rewards a TF gives.
Gut the defense bonuses from IOs. Add a few more options for res set bonuses. Give recharge a serious look, probably gut that but also update the base recharge times of sets that need recharge to function in the modern fast moving CoH (anything with static location based powers like traps).
Let me give you two examples - both because of ED.
Jurassik's car should do that at the very least! |
I am more referring to thing like IH from toggle to click. Yes I know I bring it up all the time. That was a bad nerf, not because IH didn't need adjusting, because it did. The power was flat out over powered. However, it could have been fixed w/o making it a click. They actually did fix it as a toggle at one point., still they changed it to a click.
Wanting to nerf things like +rech baffles me though. As the devs have proven, they can make the game harder w/o nerfing characters. The UG is a good example of what happens though. We are not here to lose, we get to do that irl every day. We come here to win, to do those things that we can't do in real life. This is a super hero game, and it is going to be hard to convince me that super hero can be over powered.
It is not the hero that is over powered, it is the setting that is underpowered. Zones like DA show that the setting can change, and the challenge can be brought back, all while still allowing the players to grow in power.
Why people want to bring the character down, rather than bring the environment up is what really baffles me at this point in the game. ED and GDN made sense for that time, for this time it makes more sense to increase the power of the monsters. In my opinion that is.

I am weird, but ED and the GDN stopped bothering me after IOs. Because I then saw the point. I like to think that they knew IOs were coming and that is why they did it. Who (but the devs) know if that is true or not.

You'll hear the occasional reference to the "SSOCS" (Super Secret Out of Combat Skills system.) It was *supposed* to be introduced around when we got universities put in game (issue 5.) And in some ways, supposedly, it'd do what IOs did - but apparently the way it was set up was decidedly "not fun." It never, to my knowledge, even got onto closed (non-internal-only) beta.
So, in a way, they did know - just not in the form they finally DID show up in issue 9.
I see some serious suggestions. Let's all keep in mind the point is to elicit:
If your suggestions wouldn't drive players away and ruin the game, raise firestorms of righteous fury and burning anger in the forums, and make you fear for your (virtual) safety, then be bold and Think Bigger.
And let's keep in in the spirit of fun.
Another suggestion:
Experience Diversification: After defeating 100 mobs from any enemy faction, you get half xp/rewards from the faction for the next hour in-game. If one defeats 200 before that half-rate hour is up, you get 1/4 xp/rewards though another hour. After 500, you get zero. AE custom groups all count as the same enemy group.

16: I would dump the shard system (I think it is going to be any way) and all of it merged to the thread system. The WST would reward would be a 50/50 chance for a rare/VR incarnate component. (Based on a few comments here and there, I think this is going to happen any way). The up side is that all content would drop threads for those with the alpha slot open, much like DA does now. The TFs that currently offer a component would instead offer 20-60 threads so that a common or uncommon component could be crafted.

1) Obvious answer, which is the really draconian hate, burning hate option: the new merged super-server has a higher character cap of, say, 50 characters. You get to pick which characters you transfer to the super-server, and the rest are just lost.
2) Slightly less draconian solution, but probably as much hate, burning hate (for slightly different reasons): the new super-server does not have a cap on the number of character slots you can have (or it's high enough to accommodate max slots on every current server combined) but only, say 50 slots are enabled to start with (or some lower value modified by slots purchased/earned under the old servers). All your characters carry over, but you have to pick which 50 are initially enabled - to enable the others you'd need to buy character slots much like vip-switched-to-premium players do now (moneys for teh game!).
3) Kinda oddball convoluted solution: cap of 50 characters, but the excess characters aren't deleted, they're held in a kinda holding pattern. You can use what are currently server transfers to swap an active enabled character with an inactive disabled character (VIPs still getting their free "transfer" each month).
As I say, wouldn't seriously expect any of that to happen , and I'd certainly not bother to argue for any of it in a serious discussion thread on the subject, but since we're doing this things that'd get you hated thread, there's my barely thought out answer (if anyone bothers to shoot those down I won't take the time to defend them)
on account of your suggestions.

Some of the suggestions (hasten nerfs, def nerfs, IO nerfs) are things that actually would make people quit the game. Then they would shut the game down. I mean I guess it works, people would hate you. After all they would see you as responsible for the destruction of the mmo they love. Shoot, I have seen a few things in this thread that I think would make a few staff members quit before they would implement them.
I was more going for things that people may not like, but would also not make them quit. They were however things I would actually do if I were in charge.

Destroy all parallel worlds, including Praetoria -- "Parallel world" being defined as usual as worlds in other dimensions similar enough to the "homeworld" as to be recognizable but with one or more key differences. Like time travel they're a lazy writer's tool and they promote continuity snarls of epic magnitude. Think them as a serpent's egg which, hatched, would grow mischievous, etc. They're out. The thus-far unrevealed Rikti homeworld would be revealed as an "alternate world", however, and not a parallel.
The Parallel worlds thing seems a bit too much though, but still the opinion is understandable.
