i22 Mids Update??
I (and likely more than half the community) would rather them plunk down an offline Character Creator and Base Editor than get involved in something like Mids. As mentioned above, since Mids was a player created project from the beginning, then any action on NCSoft's part would appear to be some level of favoritism and result in lots of bad ju-ju. Besides, it would be one More thing to take away from their resources available for things like new issues and actual requested QoL stuff (IE: feedback from beta/test). |
How can you say that half the community would prefer an NC made builder, than Mids? The people who use Mids, love it. Never meet anyone who tried it and didnt like it. And the people who dont use it..I am sure a good portion of them would not actually KNOW about it.
|
As for the example of possible favoritism, I was trying to give an example of what could be construed as NCSoft supporting say Titan Network over Badge Hunter. While it's obvious that this isn't an issue, there's always somebody that has to cry foul if they were to make an official offer of support. Staying neutral is the safest business decision in that respect.
Edit: And by character creator I mean that first step everyone does when starting the game for the first time, not something like creating a character build in Mids.
Ah ha..sorry I misread you. Mind you, does make more sense this way..since I was wondering how you could claim that (what I thought) with a straight face. lol
Honestly, even though it represents a lot of work done by Mids himself, and everyone else who has worked on it since, PS would probably be better off developing a planner from scratch than to acquire or support Mids officially.
Mids was originally created before in-depth power and mechanics information was known. So there are a lot of fundamental design decisions that resulted in things working differently from how the actual game works. And there are a lot of manually created workarounds for those. As they start using more and more complex mechanics in the game, that divergence of design becomes more and more of an issue, and it becomes increasingly hard to accurately model them within the existing framework. Diellan is having to basically write a whole new way of looking at enhancements to get PPM and the ATOs to work, and the normal/catalyzed sets require a new way of defining enhancement sets.
That's a big part of the reason why modern updates take longer, because of things like Beast Mastery and Assassin's Strike, or even the Scrapper ATO, which requires tweaking almost every scrapper power by hand...
If Paragon was going to do a planner they'd be wise to base it on the game engine itself to avoid having to deal with things like that.
My problem with this push to make sure that everyone knows that "ATIO" is wrong is that everything except DO and SO with an "O" in it is wrong, because none of them have anything to do with Origins.
Sure, some of them you can stretch the definition to, but it's always been for the sake of convenience, not correctness. Why do people suddenly care now? And then, why only care about this? |

Or is that one of the dirty hacks/workarounds you mentioned that was implemented on a case by case basis?

Negaduck: I see you found the crumb. I knew you'd never notice the huge flag.
Does it? It's the same as the Stealth IOs, and I thought mids had those set up for exclusivity already.
Or is that one of the dirty hacks/workarounds you mentioned that was implemented on a case by case basis? |
Instead of one exclusion group for stealth IOs, doing it in a fully automated fashion would mean 72 exclusion groups... one for each enhancement and its Superior equivalent.
I just checked and it looks like he did it with only 6 exclusion groups, which makes sense as you can't have more than one ATO set slotted. They'll probably still need to be manually set barring an ugly hack of assigning the exclusion group by the name or order of the enhancement. It's a pick your poison situation.
Note that the game itself doesn't have any concept of exclusion groups. Those are a Mids-only contrivance. The engine has a completely different method of preventing you from slotting things like stealth IOs.
First off, I'd like to mention that as someone who divides time roughly equally between testing builds in Mids and actually playing the game, I greatly appreciate the effort you all put into developing Mids and keeping it updated. Sure, it'd be great if we had a new release of Mids at the same time as updates for the game, but... It's free. It'll get here when it gets here. I can wait.
If I wasn't underpaid (or underemployed, however you want to look at it), I would most definitely donate to the cause but sadly, it can't be done right now.
And since I'm here... (I probably should have created an account on the Titan forums and mentioned it long ago, but I'm an expert procrastinator)
Does this mean damage calculations (specifically, Critical Hits for Scrappers and Stalkers) and stacking from Defensive Sweep/Power Siphon (Titan Weapons/Kinetic melee, respectively) will be properly calculated with the next release?
Just thought I'd ask. >.>
For reasons that are too complicated to get into, Mids is going to have to treat them the same as IOs. I looked into overhauling the enhancement database so that it could handle attuned enhancements and so forth, but it's way too complicated to do in a reasonable amount of time, so no go there.
Luckily, it won't ever refer to them as Archetype Enhancements or some abbreviation thereof anyway, so I'm safe. |
I bet the pressure is REALLY on after 10 days without a bathroom.

EDIT: Forgot the /sarcasm comment block.
If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.
Black Pebble is my new hero.
I've been using Mids for as long as I can remember. To me it is a necessary part of the game. So much so that it is no different to me then not having a decent biography for each and every single one of my characters. I've actually lost the desire to play any new powerset on a new character without having that clear cut path of what my power choices will be from 1 - 50. Just the same as not knowing who that character is as defined in a bio. Why? Because it lets me focus on the things we love the most. Actually playing the game. I don't have to make a decision that might cost me a respec later down the line when I've already made that decision prior to ever playing the powerset.
Because of Mids and my playstyle I "KNOW" my character is going to be badass. It gives me more incentive to get to those new powers. To level the toon up. I don't "think" or "hope" it is going to be badass or just be "ok" at the end. This utility changed the way I approach the game. As much as it's appreciated, all the hard work that goes into development of this fine program, it's a frustration that when a new issue comes out mid's isn't right there with it. We all know it will be updated....but to leave the game for a bit, see a new issue was released with new powersets, immediately check to see if Mids is updated and see that the last update was all the way back in December. One can't help but be filled with a sense of disappointment.
Then you have to wait for weeks on end for the new release. Then you realize you're not really interested anymore and go back to playing your other toons. *shrug* I know I'm being silly. This scenario isn't always the case but this illustrates the difference one little tool makes for a lot of us. I'm as appreciative as anyone else who has ever used Mids. Keep up the good work, I'll just have to find something else to do until the update drops =D

@Roderick
awesome update as always guys! =]
jus thought I'd throw this out there, I see the ATE/ATO's (whatever ppl wanna call them) the graphic is kinda weird in its space in the selection window (total nitpick tho, jus fyi) (nice job on seperating the catalyzed versions though, smart move)
bigger issue is that the enhancement display of any multi-faceted enhancements does not display properly in the window now, this includes things like Hami's which enhance more than one effect
also I noticed that the PVP melee AOE set (forget name at this moment) unique proc for lowering resistance is inadvertantly showing the effect lowering my resistance (i had it slotted in blazing aura, ie when i toggle BA on, my resistance goes down)
ok well these might be bugs in the new release, or these might just be issues im having and that no one else is, but I know that part of the reason you guys have always made such a kickass program is good feedback, so im just trying to do my part
thanks again for Mid's over the years, I've prolly spent more time using it than playing the game! =P
