You guys need a proofreader.

They are grammar mistakes. Yes they happen, yes they can be annoying, but statements such as stating we "don't care" are out of line and uncalled for. Many a time I have seen Protean, Viridian and Doctor Aeon working until midnight for weeks at a time trying to eek in that last bit of content before a text lock so that you have more to play with in the upcoming Issue. Many a time have I seen our QA department working overtime to make sure that everything works as should, and sometimes grammar slips by.

I apologize that these examples occurred, and I will certainly pass the qualitative feedback along. At the same time, please remember that we do care, deeply, about this game and its Community.

File a bug report please.
Lose the attitude. Paying customers will give whatever feedback they want. Who are you to say it's hyperbole? It doesn't matter what the dev team do, what matters is how they're perceived. If you put out half finished content like the newest SSA then people are going to think the devs don't care about the writing in this game. Your job, as a community lead, is to manage expectations. Not tell paying customers to stfu!

As a long time fan of the CoH Franchise (10 years baby!) I can't begin to tell you how frustrating this is to me. This game has so much potential.

"Hey, Kettle, this is Pot. You're black!"

A little less attitude in your own post would be just fine. Zwill's post could be read as dismissive, but I don't think that was his intent. You are, IMO, putting words in his mouth.

Yes, typos suck. Yes, they are probably easily fixed. As someone upthread mentioned, hiring an English Major to act as proofreader is probably both reasonable and cost-effective. As a Ren-Faire comedian put it years ago:

Q: What's the best way to get an English Major's attention?
A: Yell, "Hey, Waiter!"

Let's let the devs decide whether or not they want to care about their work before antagonizing them any further. Depending on how Issue 23 goes, we might have some fun. I've got a contact in the industry press who would love to hear about this stuff.

I can just see it now:

Issue 23: Daeth to Typos!

- We've fixed EVERY TYPO IN THE GAME!
- That's it. There's nothing else. Sorry.

Known Issues:
- Typo in the issue name. This will be corrected in Issue 24.

Actually, Zwill, I'll make Paragon a serious offer right here and now. No snark, no attitude, this is one hundred percent sincerity.

I'm a technical writer/editor. Twenty years' experience. And I think I know the lore better than most.

Here's the offer:

I know PS doesn't have the funds to hire a full-time proofreader - but you might be able to contract me.

  • You tell me, "Okay, Michelle, we're setting a budget cap of X dollars (or Y time). Fix as much as you possibly can in that allotted time." (And for the record, I have brought the last five major projects I've worked on to completion in half the time originally estimated.)
  • I've worked as a 1099 contractor before. I will handle the taxes on my end - Paragon just has to cut me the check.
  • You show me how to get to the in-game text (whether it's in .pigg files or if it's something I can VPN into if they're kept server-side).
  • I will sign any NDA you want.
  • I will present the information in whatever format you need to facilitate its serverside correction for future updates.
  • A separate file can be created for ambiguities, contradictions, or statements that would require further dev review.

Again, this offer is as honest-to-God real as I can convey. Because I love this game.

viva Samuraiko!

One wonders why, with the Paragon Market now in place, they haven't leveraged the playerbase to fix up any number of rough spots in the older content/execution in return for 'points'...

I could definitely get behind this. I would gladly devote more time to seriously beta testing and fixing errors in return for points. This system works well for Live Mocha, a language learning site that I've been using to brush up on my Spanish, French, and German. I trade my time correcting homework and tests for people learning English in exchange for the advanced lessons in the languages I'm studying. Normally the advanced lessons cost real money, but you can earn coins by helping others learn, and as such I haven't spent a dime.

I think a system like this would work very well here.
