Only two songs nominated for best song?? Has that happened before?

Nothing for Drive or Shame? or Albert Brooks?

And how did Girl With Dragon Tattoo not get nominated for the awesome soundtrack???

From time to time I actually try to care about these kinds of nominations/awards.
Then someone mentions something like this and they lose all significance for me again.

They increased the nominations for best picture in 2009. The reasons given have been to include more genre movies and comedies. Having 10 or so nominations actually dates back to the 30s but the trend faded out from the mid 40s until recently.

Only 1 nomination for Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, I am disappointed.

Now granted it was for Gary Oldman, who was *amazing* in that movie, but that movie was so good on so many levels, I'm surprised it didn't get more recognition.

Correction - it got 3 nominations: Best Actor (Gary Oldman), Best Score (Alberto Iglesias), and Best Screenplay Adaptation by Bridget O'Connor & Peter Straughan.

GO GARY! WIN THIS ONE!

No nominations for Pixar this year? Guess Cars 2 really sucked.

Well, nothing for Cars 2, but Pixar did receive a Best Animated Short Film nomination for "La Luna".

Also, Andy Serkis was robbed again! His portrayal of Captain Haddock was the best thing about Spielberg's Tintin movie, and his performance as Caesar in Rise of the Planet of the Apes was the driving force behind its box office success. When is the Academy going to recognize motion capture as legitimate acting?

Not to sound too much like a conspiracy theorist but I'll bet there's a certain mindset in Hollywood that considers things like voice acting or motion capture acting to be sort of second class compared to "real" acting. I think whether it's an overt prejudice or just an unconscious one there's always going a certain uphill battle for people like Serkis to get legitimately recognized for what he does.

So how many of the nominees were only shown in the last week of 2011 with the minimum theaters (six nationwide I think) to qualify? How many were only shown in limited release at "art house" theaters? And they wonder why the Oscars no longer get the TV ratings it once did.

As for Transformers being nominated, like most blockbuster SciFi only in the technical categories. Don't get me wrong, I don't think it should have qualified for any of the major categories, it's just that on occasion a effects heavy film do have great performances and are routinely shortchanged.

That and technological backwardness. The Academy voters are notoriously behind the times when it comes to innovation in films. To win them over, Serkis needs a short documentary on everything he does to bring vitality to his performances, complete with before-and-after split screen comparisons of scenes. Otherwise, they won't make any disctinction between his work and the paycheck performances of Jim Carrey and Tom Hanks in Robert Zemeckis's creaky mo-cap movies.

First year of the Best Animated Feature Film (started in 2001) that Disney/Pixar did not receive a nod. Not surprised by Cars 2, but I guess that there was no love for the newest Winnie the Pooh movie...

Kinda sad about Andy Serkis though; his portrayal as Caesar was top notch.

I find your lack of signature disturbing.

So, I saw The Tree of Life in the theater a while back. While it was a visually stunning film and rightly fits in the cinematography category ... best picture material it was not. At least not in my opinion anyway.

While a beautiful film it had some significant pacing issues and far too disjointed a narrative for it to be readily accepted by the average moviegoer. I've always thought that a Best Picture worthy film should at least try to be an accessable one.

Meanwhile, on Patton Oswalt's Twitter account, he's hosting an imaginary wild party for all of his fellow snubbed actors.

Quote:
Join me for a drink at The Drawing Room, @AlbertBrooks? Me and Serkis have been here since 6am.

See you later tonight. Might be out of booze -- Serkis has Pogues on the jukebox & Fassbender just showed up in a pirate hat.

Oh **** -- we're DEFINITELY going to run out of booze. Charlize & Tilda just pulled up in a stolen police car.

Dude, GET DOWN HERE. Gosling is doing keg stands and Olsen & Dunst LITERALLY just emerged from a shower of rose petals.

Nolte & Plummer just drove past, mooning us. Serkis & Tilda are signing "Is There Life on Mars?"

Oops -- Von Trier just pulled up in a pass van dressed as Goering. "Let's go to Legoland!" With a boozy hurrah, we're out!

Oh. My. God. Just pulled up to Legoland. DiCaprio's rented the park for the day. Dibs on the Duplo Gardens! #andscene
I'd much rather watch that than the rather mediocre-looking lineup for the real event.

What the hell is this "The Artist" ? And why was it nominated so much? .. Actually I haven't heard of most of these, and don't care to watch the rest... Except maybe Tinker.. darn Gary Oldman's acting ability!

Serkis should've been given Jonah Hill's spot for Supporting Actor.

It's a mostly silent black and white piece set during the decline of the silent movie period of film. It won best actor at Cannes and three Golden Globes. Honestly it looks pretty good, so hopefully I'll have the free time to watch it this weekend (along with probably Man on a Ledge).

Warrior was awesome and I thought for sure it would have been nominated.

I thought it would've been nominated if only because Tom Hardy is becoming a Hollywood darling and the Academy loves to nominate movies with respected actors when their in a movie with serious subject matter regardless of the actual quality. However, after giving a nod to The Fighter, which was a superior film all the way around, in the previous year, I can understand why they would be hesitant to nominate Warrior.

Not to my knowledge. However, the requirements to be nominated are fairly strict: the song must have been written specifically for the movie in question and not have been published prior: it cannot be a remake or a cover. In fact, if a movie is a screen version of a stage play, all of the songs from the original stage play are automatically disqualified, having not been written explicitly for the movie.

I think there have been years when only three songs have been nominated, but I think this is the first time in at least recent memory that only two have been.

The problem with voice acting (such as within animated pictures) and motion capture is that the overall performance is a combination of the actor and technology, and the technology component is not itself eligible for a performance award. It would be no different than if an actor performed in a movie and then all of his lines were dubbed over by another proficient voice actor. The combined performance is two different performances blended together, but the award is not an ensemble award. If only one of them can receive the award and neither can take credit for the performance of the other, both would be at a disadvantage to singular performances that a single actor can take full credit for.

That's just reality, and its not entirely wrong.

See im annoyed here, I loved the movie contagion and it at least should have gotten a nod as a good drama. Sure the subject matter was uncomfortable but it was a well done movie nonetheless
