Global name changes?
My recollection of policy matches yours and the support article. My recollection of history with the extra global handle change grant coincides with yours.
ParagonWiki has the same information.
My suspicion is that either they are jerking someone's chain in the Exalted Help channel, are confusing it with character respecs, or are just plain wrong (yeah, I can use that word, it doesn't violate forum rules ).
If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

Oh, I don't think they were being mean or anything. They were really nice. I just think they might have been thinking of something else, that's all. At any rate, I did post a link to this thread and told people in the help channel that they should probably read this before changing their global name. It really doesn't matter to me who's right, but if I am, it's something that's pretty permanent, and I didn't want someone regretting changing it and then being stuck with something they didn't want.

They definitely don't give a global rename with every issue. I think we've gotten more than one, though. I seem to recall two occasions when the global server went kerflooey and global names got changed to the next character you logged in with. But since that hasn't happened in quite a while, I don't expect any global rename tokens in the foreseeable future.

Well, I changed my global name once way back when, and again when GR hit. Just a few months ago, I looked at menu -> chat handle, and much to my surprise, I had the option to change it again, which I did because I ended up not liking the name I chose with GR after all. So, somehow or somewhere I did get an extra chance to change my name.
My memory may be playing tricks on me here, though - maybe I never used my original name change, it's been far too long for me to remember for certain, so when GR came out I used the first one, and had the GR change left over?
I think that the last time they gave out Global name change was when the servers merged as a lot of global, s were duplicated.

Hi there! I am talking to some people in the help channel on Exalted about global name changes. They are saying that we get one with every issue. I know that the policy used to be that we only got one, and that was it. I also know that they've given out an extra global name change before, but I thought that that was a one-time exception, and that they haven't done it again or said that they will in the future.
According to a support article, you can only change your global name once. In the help channel, they are insisting that the support article is wrong, though, and that once the next issue is released, we will get another. One person said that they have changed their global name four or five times! I just want to make sure that if you can't change your global name more than once, other people in the help channel change theirs thinking they can just change it again later. And likewise, if I'm wrong and we will be able to change it again later, I don't want to tell people the wrong thing! Can someone please tell me if they've heard that you can change it more than once, and if so, provide me some sort of link or other citation so that if I'm wrong I won't be telling people the wrong thing? Thanks! <3 |
The global name is the name of the first character you create. In my case, that name was Ukase Rex.
After some time went by, I'd deleted that toon, and had made a couple more, leveled them up - and noticed that I'd played one more than the other. I changed it to @Perfidy using the global name change "token".
Eventually, I changed it back to Ukase Rex, and recently, due to the onslaught of Tex Rex, Mex Rex and Flex Rex, and every sort of Rex, I dropped it to plain Ukase.
So, that's 3 global name changes.
I suspect that these name changes they are talking about are character name changes, not global name changes.
Depending on when you started, you should have 3 global changes total.
Just my two inf.

Agreed, they were more than likely talking about Character name changes as you can purchase those (I'm pretty sure they can be as a token?). Monthly, VIP's get a server/character transfer token as well if they were utterly confused. I didn't know about the GR or Merger renames, but I was aware of the onetime global rename from waaaaaaaaay before I left last in i13. Now a days it seems like everybody that returns to the game is changing their global right after logging in for the first time. Makes remembering those early team mates almost impossible anymore.

There's been four instances that I can think of where the Handle rename has been reset to "available" - twice with the second time no later than i11, there were issues with the global chat server, and then when the chat servers merged and then with Freedom.

Interesting. I didn't remember reading about a Global rename with Freedom but I could have missed it.

I'm a 4 1/2 year vet and I've changed my global 2 times I remember and maybe a third as well. Not sure the mechanism for when these come available. It is not often, choose carefully.
I know they gave one out when the Global Chat Servers melted into slag shortly after I7 went Live. As a matter of fact, they not only handed out a free @Global Rename, but also reset all @Globals, so that the first character you logged in became your @Global.
It's how I ended up with my current @Global.
Looking at Paragon Wiki, I find:

NCsoft will be granting a @Global Chat Handle rename token with the Issue 14 launch. To change your global chat handle, type /change_handle "Player Name" in the chat line or click on "Chat Handle (X)" from the drop down "Menu" option

The VIP Head Start will include a plethora of activities as well as the following bonuses for VIP players:

Ah, so the historical section on the P-Wiki link I gave earlier needs to be updated.
I didn't remember the I14 rename option happening or the VIP Headstart rename option.
I did remember the one in the summer of 2006 (the Issue 7 one you mentioned).

We all get one global name change by default.
We were granted one when the global names broke.
And we were granted one when the server lists were merged to fix global name conflicts between US and EU players.
As far as I'm aware, those were the only ones we were ever given.
I know you can request a global name change, but that usually only happens if there is a copyright or trademark being violated by the name.

Can one petition for a global name change token, or is that a "Don't bother, ain't gonna happen"-type thing? And how does one go about doing such a thing, if it is possible?

Also, rather than necro'ing a months old thread, you really want to make a new thread instead. This one will soon be locked because of this.

Hunh. When I create a new thread, I get CREPED out because I didn't look to see if there was a thread already opened on the subject. When I find one with the Subject I am looking for, I get BELGIAN WAFFLED out for it being old. This is why I HATE using Forum.

You necroed a 5 month old thread to ask a question, which can get you modsmacked by the mods and StarGeek not only politely answered your question but gave you a friendly warning on what to expect will happen to the thread.
How is that getting BAGEL WITH CREAM CHEESED out?
If you sincerely found his polite response offensive then I strongly suggest you stop playing MMO's altogether because you will continuosly be encountering people a lot less polite than him in the games.
I was in no way flaming you and am not doing so in this post. I was simply pointing out one of the forum rules which you should have read which is being seriously enforced these days. There's a link at the top of every forum to the rules.
Additionally, I went through your previous posts and can't find where else you were FRUIT AND YOGURT CUPPED out. The closest I can see is when you posted a question in the Guide section and you were politely pointed to the proper section.

First off, let me apologize. I meant no ill will against StarGeek, Taxibot_Belle, Forbin_Project, or the City of Heroes/Villians community in general. I would also like to apologize to the community for my language; I didn't really need to go there, and to those who found it offensive, I will promise to clean it up in the future. StarGeek's response was well-written, polite, and non-offensive, and I never meant to imply that it was anything but.
Once again, a hasty posting, and a lack of humor translating well into text, has gotten me into trouble.
Second, as to necroing: I never intended to do this. I had a problem. I searched the forums. My search criteria was: Keyword: changehandle, and I found a Subject that was appropriate.
I have read the rules, and what it says is this:
Non-Constructive posts are prohibited. Below is a non-exhaustive list of examples of non-constructive posts. .... Cross posting - As a courtesy to others before beginning a new thread, please look to see if an active thread on that topic has already been established using the Search feature. If so, place your comments there instead. Multiple threads on the same subject clutter up the forum needlessly and many good ideas may be lost. Use the Search link to keep discussions about one topic to one thread only. .... Thread necromancy, or necro-posting is responding to a thread that has not been active (has had no posts) in at least 30 days. Necro-posting is a form of thread bumping and as such is prohibited. If you wish to discuss a considerably older topic, create a new post and link to the older discussion. |
Finally, as to the previous "chewing" out: You're right, StarGeek, it's not here anymore. That happened a long, long time ago. I can't even remember the subject. I just remember being chewed out for opening another thread on a subject when one already existed on the subject. I was told to search for the subject before posting a new thread, and that's what I was doing here. Again, apologies for my incompetence. All I can say is, I rarely use forum because of it, and, in the future, my forum use will be even more limited because of this instance.
Don't sweat it, it's not a big deal. Personally, I wish they would get rid of the whole "thread necro'ing" rule altogether because you're right. If a topic has been discussed already, why not post there instead of having a bunch of threads all about the same thing? If someone is deliberately bumping a thread to be a nuisance, lock it. But if someone is genuinely adding onto the conversation that last had activity a while back, I don't see anything wrong with that.
To be fair, I don't think StarGeek had any malicious intention in his post. The fact of the matter is that right or wrong, the mods do lock posts like this sometimes, and I think his intention was to let you know so that if it got locked, you wouldn't take it personally.
I know Belle in person, and I can assure you that she would never be mad at you for posting in her thread. If anything, I suspect she'll be giddy that someone found it useful when she sees it, if she hasn't already.
We've been saving Paragon City for eight and a half years. It's time to do it one more time.

I'm not Zwiffendaggerinmyback, nor am I a Moderator, Administrator, Volunteer, Dev or an employee of Paragon Studios or NCSoft, nor am I another forum user (does that cover the new entry in Rule #16 well enough?) but I do have some thoughts about it.
If there is a recent discussion, they want you to search so that we don't have 15 new posts about Celestial Armor being removed but instead have one thread to consolidate that information in to make it easy to find. If there is an old discussion, things may have changed so that the old post isn't relevant and people don't miss seeing the dates on posts and think that something said applies currently. The game has enough changes that what was happening then may not be how it happens now. Reasons given during the old discussions may not apply as they do now with other changes. If there is an old discussion about something it would be appropriate to link to it so that people can see that it's something that HAS been discussed before but that there have been enough changes to make it so that all of the things stated in the previous discussions may no longer be true but still present some of the same information that would be relevant today. --------------- It made sense in my head when I started typing it. I think it still makes sense. --------------- And that may not be the reason at all, that's just one reason that I can see for it. If I'm completely wrong, I'm sure someone from the OCR team or the Dev team will correct me. EDIT: BTW Z, now I have new numbers to remember. Thanks a lot. ![]() |
TJ put the thread necro question succinctly.
Basically, if a thread lays long dormant, there's the likelihood that the information contained therewithin is out of date. Also, if a year old conversation is worth reviving, there's usually some sort of a new development to go along with it that's worthy of a new thread for. |

We would like to kindly remind you all to not resurrect dead threads, however we encourage you to start new threads for such topics.
If necessary, please link to the previous thread.
Thanks for your understanding on this matter.
