Superhero-series recommendations, please

Two entertainments I love are space science fiction, and superheroes. I've started collecting both on DVD, and have decided that, with there not being many live-action superhero TV shows at all, I'd better look into the animated shows. Can anyone make recommendations as to what shows to get? I've seen some of "Batman: The Brave and the Bold", so I know that's good (aside from the non-serious/comical episodes). I'd prefer the serious/gritty kind, and nothing like "The Super Hero Squad Show", PLEASE! I'll consider any superhero, solo or teamed. Also, if you know of live-action shows besides the '60s "Batman", the '70s "Wonder Woman", the '80s show "The Flash", and "Birds of Prey", I'd love to hear about them, too. Thanks, all.

Batman the animated Series
Batman Beyond
Superman (Timm-verse version)
Teen Titans
X-Men (the 90's run)

Though not directly related to superheroes, I enjoyed Gargoyles which included quite a few voice actors from ST TNG so it kind of crosses over with sci-fi

Live-action sereis would include and mostly if you're nostalgic or a completionist:
Wonder Woman
The Incredible Hulk
The Incredibule Hulk made for tv movies
The Flash
Batman (60's Adam West)
Adventures of Superman (1950s)
Lois & Clark the new adventures of Superman
Smallville (of course)

Let us not forget Justice League and Justice League Unlimited.

Two superhero animated series from the same guy responsible for Gargoyles are Spectacular Spider-Man and the relatively new Young Justice on Cartoon Network. Both come highly recommended.

Wolverine and the X-Men is also pretty good, and Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes is well worth checking out.

Thanks for the suggestions so far, everyone. With "Smallville", is there a particular season in which they started getting serious about the whole superhero thing? In other words, are there early seasons I could skip, or was Clark doing superheroism from the start? On "Heroes" and "Alphas", they come off as wanting the characters to be just people with extraordinary abilities, and shying away from the costumed-crimefighter bit. On "No Ordinary Family", the father actually patrolled and fought crime, so that show came closer to being superheroes, and I'm looking for straight-out superheroes.

I'm not sure they ever truly got 'serious about the whole superhero thing' in Smallville. They had some episodes bordering on decent, superheroically speaking (and IMO, of course), but I couldn't pinpoint a particular season for it as that show was of what I'd call sporadic quality. Buffy the Vampire Slayer was a better 'superhero' on a regular basis than the 'Blur'.

You could say that Smallville suffered most of the time when it tried to get serious about the superhero transition, with the exception of the Johns episodes, because they wouldn't really commit to it, so their version getting serious was pretty halfassed.

X-Men: Evolution

I seem to be alone in my enjoyment of this series. Possibly because the only knowledge I had about X-Men came from animated shows, so the changes didn't bother me as much.
Really starts to ramp up there with Apocalypse and all. The final shot with them being grown up still makes me wish it'd kept going...

Also, as a longtime F.O.L.C I have to thank Tannim222 for the mention. Lois and Clark the new adventures of Superman was one of my 1st exposures to Superheroes.
I just watched Seasons Greedings the other night actually.

I didn't dislike that series until Juggernaut.

Young Justice, for sure!

All of the Timm shows are excellent (Superman:TAS, Batman:TAS, JL/JLU)
Also, the Wonder Woman animated movie was really good.

Oh, and check out the new Green Lantern series coming to Cartoon network next year. they already aired the premiere episode.

As for Smallville, I'd suggest you skip it as it's not about Clark being a hero as much as him becoming one (there's a BIG difference.)

Also, for live-action hero themed, check out Misfits. There's a thread about it on the forums. It's a British show and while the first seaon doesn't necessarily get into the superhero aspect, season two shows some glimpses of it. Through its really about the misfit young-adults and not so much about them being heroes, its pretty interesting through.

I thought it was season one and four of Heroes were the good ones.

What surprised me about the series was how they kept the traditional X-Men characters true to their western characterizations while Armor, the one Japanese teammate was very much a classic Japanese schoolgirl heroine.

After it ran in Japan the next Marvel title was Blade, which I didn't see. Before X-Men was an Iron Man series and a Wolverine series, which I also haven't seen.

All four of these series are 12 episodes each. I believe some of them have been aired on G4, dubbed of course.
