Also, I am reminded of the Percy Jackson books, but set in ancient times.
yes.
The most humorous and recent example being the people who believe that the current Sherlock Holmes movies does a disservice to the character not as written but as portrayed in earlier movies.

I personally wouldn't mind if they made a decent adventure story w/out turning it into a glorified action flick.
edit: We just had Immortals....*sigh*
Yes but Immortals was the beginning of gods and men when the defeat the titans.
This is the end of gods and men, when the titans make their carefully planned return.

It really seems like they're shooting for a God of War type story with this one, and the visuals make it a little more obvious. If they can bring the same kind of action across, they should at least get some positive reception for epic scale and action.

Story tellers have been doing this for as long as the stories themselves have existed. All of the Greek mythological and heroic stories have evolved over time, probably from original stories we don't even actually completely know. Somehow, we give a pass to everyone from antiquity who embellished and otherwise bastardized folklore and mythology (see: Greek mythology, Norse mythology, Arthurian mythology), and then we expect everyone from the present day to respect one randomly selected version of those stories as "authoritative" without further embellishment, adaptation, or bastardization.

I think Arthur Conan Doyle would have made a horrible action movie director. For instance, the final fight at Reichenbach Falls was a lackluster yawnfest in comparison to the movie version.

I would call it an abomination rather than abortion. If this movie project was terminated before it was complete then it would have been a well deserved abortion.
I actually liked the first movie (the remake that is), and am interested in this one. But I could have definitely gone without that more-than-played-out Manson track. Something orchestrated and epic would have been a better fit for the trailer.

anyway, in all fairness, the original, classic "Clash of the Titans" fouled up the story of Perseus as well.
After all, Pegasus is Medusa's child via Poseidon and was born out of Medusa's severed neck, along with a monster whose name I forget.
That being true, Pegasus could hardly be used in the quest against Medusa.
still, I'll probably see this one....it fits that they have Perseus dealing with the Titans even though it's supposed to be Heracles
after all, in the first movie, Perseus decided NOT to end up with Andromeda
Perseus and Andromeda getting together is sort of a necessity for Heracles coming to be, being his grandparents and all.

I think Manson's version of Sweet Dreams is nice and creepy and complements the original Eurythmics version.
That said I really really hate the tendency to stick a rock/punk/pop track into a movie trailer that's set in ancient times.
I'm waiting for another remake of Ben Hur with parts of Dishwalla's "Counting Blue Cars" being stuck in the trailer.

GG, I would tell you that "I am killing you with my mind", but I couldn't find an emoticon to properly express my sentiment.

haven't seen the new movie, but the only thing I'll say about that is that Holmes in the books was prissy about his personal appearance...he always dressed cleanly and clean shaven (I think partially so that he'd be significantly different from his disguises, many of which were dirty)....his slobbishness pretty much just extended to his environment.
other than that, pretty good
I note the Robert Downing Jr has recently been chosen for a couple of roles where he is an eccentric, arrogant genius with addiction troubles
and he portrays it so well.
*snark*I wonder how he steps into that role so easily. *end snark*
seriously though, he's pretty much perfect as Tony Stark and Sherlock Holmes (aside from the dressing as a bum thing)

Where this practice mostly goes haywire is when the period between the original and the remake becomes so short that it's almost a blur artistically speaking. You could take that scenario to its logical extreme by mentioning people like George Lucas who's not even content to be dead yet before he tries to remake his -own- masterpieces.

I've never had a serious problem with people "reimagining" stories that are relatively old and updating them for modern audiences. Obviously works as old as Greek mythology, Shakespeare and even Arthur Conan Doyle are well ripe to be modernized. I suppose what makes those examples acceptable is that there have been many, many years separating the source materials and present day generations.

Heck, I do myth-based stuff all the time and rarely bother to match it up with the old stories...reference Divine Blood where I use a lot of figures from myth
reference Coppola's movie Lady Chatterly's Dracula....excuse me, he claimed it was Bram Stoker's
prior to that one, I'd seen a lot of movies that hyped up Dracula and Mina as a romance and not cared...but Coppola was claiming that it was true to Bram Stoker's vision...which bugged me
Immortals was just visually and story-wise irritating, lots of plot holes and in all honesty, it would have done better to just claim to be its own setting rather than saying it was Theseus's story....which doesn't help the annoyingly over-the top and impractical action scenes...but at least they weren't trying to be the "real" story....not really sure where it lost me, but it was pretty quickly and I started defaulting to analysis of the plot and technique...basically, I tend to give low ratings to any story that doesn't successfully prevent me from analyzing it on first watch through
Beowulf I would have enjoyed again, except for having run across a statement by the filmmakers that they had decided that Beowulf was an unreliable narrator and that they were wanting to show what they think REALLY happened...minus that pretentious claim, it would have been much more enjoyable...because with that pretentious claim, I kept noticing the places that failed in regards to events that have historical validity from multiple sources
Clash is fine to me, Wrath will probably be similar....it doesn't try to claim itself as anything other than an action movie with monsters loosely based on mythology...it should be light-hearted fun

The original Clash of the Titans and Jason and the Argonauts, they were true pieces of film, which actually followed the story close enough.
Hollywood takes Greek Mythology like this, Dismantle it from having Deep meanings/very complex Hubristic and Animalistic themes/ deep culture references/very descriptive fights(if the story has any)/Gods which play with humans.Lastly women which are shown to be innocent, emotional and all that stuff.Obviously more would be involved but that will give you the gist of a average play/novel.
Then they assemble it to be this Action/ lots of hot women (shown to be fighters & disobey men(Some women would disobey there man, like Clytemnestra and Helen of troy but most woman wouldn't dare to))/More action and explosions(somehow)/Massive men with huge weapons(Some exceptions but overall it was very uncommon)/ Simplistic societies and the funniest is that Gods seem to have lost there actual meanings.
What I mean by this is that lets take Hera for example in many of the Greek plays and novels she is known to be very vengeful and very un-womanly and she hates Gods which interfere with human affairs, and usually has arguments with Zeus because of this. But to Hollywood she is shown to love her fellow Gods, and is apparently likes the idea of Gods helping Humans.
But lets be serious directors have been doing this for ages, not going to change so you might as well just enjoy it, and laugh at how incorrect the stories are.
I think the only time I was wrong about a film was LotR and Oh My God how I was wrong
Sorry for the poor grammar and spelling very tired I just got off work
