Constant Map Server Disconnects
The common cause is zoning. When people having the problem are zoning the mapserver disconnects them.
|
Not everyone is having that problem.
I'd wager MOST aren't having that problem.
So we need to find what is common to both systems that could be affecting them when players zone.
If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

Are the mapserver disconnects still happening after today's patch (December 15)?

I got a forest of red spikes on /netgraph 1 before it happened, and had lag in the previous mission too. I think I was up to something like 150 lost in packets on /netgraph in that mission.
Put in a petition about it just for info's sake, then called it a night, as I didn't feel like pummeling Dominatrix and the associated hordes of Imperial troops to get to the same point again.
Mind you, this was a Mapserver withing a mission, not whilst loading into/out of a mission, so may be an unrelated issue. <shrug>
Warning:
The above post may contain Cynicism, sarcasm and/or pessimism. If you object to the quantities contained, then tough.
Find the similarities:
Meowtch is running Windows 7 64-bit, I'm running Windows XP 32-bit.
Meowtch has an Nvidia GeForce 2GB graphics card, I have an ATI Radeon HD 4550 1GB graphics card.
Meowtch has 4GB RAM, I have 2GB RAM.
Meowtch uses Ambient Occlusion, I don't as I know my card can't handle it.
Meowtch plays at 1920x1080, I play at 1600x12??(widescreen).
Doesn't look like the problem is on our end as I see no similarities between our systems.
Why would graphics settings affect moving a character from one zone to another? I know that it has to load graphics for that new zone, but seriously, if there are no graphic problems playing within a zone, why would problems only arise during zoning? It's easy to blame an individual's computer or graphics card, but things were running just fine before the Winter Event patch.

The few bits of actual information you finally provided aren't enough to get the full picture.
Oh, and as a side note, I do have a degree in Computer and Information Systems and have been employed doing Technical Support for over a decade. All of which means nothing in the long run.
But I wish you good luck resolving your problems.
If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

Since you apparently don't appreciate it when people offer to help resolve problems, I'll not try to offer any more help to you.

Thanks, and likewise.
There's no need to be snarky about it, I appreciate your input but you seem to be of the opinion that the fault usually lies with the user and not with the manufacturer, information easily found by reading your signature. The fact is CoH was running just fine for me until the latest patch, which I clearly stated.
I explained in as much detail as possible what happens and when. The loading screen doing a double-take is not normal in my experience, which is why I described it to the best of my ability. Our systems are fundamentally different, so it's only logical to guess that the problem seems to spring from the latest patch and not our individual systems. Thanks, and likewise. |
I've never been of the opinion that the fault usually lies with the user and not the manufacturer. That's why I want to see logs of the output from programs like CoH Helper and HiJackThis. Without actual data, it's all a guessing game. I don't troubleshoot by playing twenty questions or shaking a Magic 8-Ball. As for the manufacturer's side of things, I've regularly reported bugs when I come across them and busted their chops about it when it's been appropriate. I also try to give as much detail as possible including technical data when relevant.
As for my signature, I'm not sure what it has to do with your interpretation that I'm trying to blame the user and not the manufacturer.
That first line is a paraphrase of something said by a game designer and it's basically just another way of saying "no matter what you do, you can't please everyone, someone isn't going to like it". It has nothing to do with anything else. I didn't have the exact quote the way he words it, or it would have been in quotes with his name attributed to it.
The second line was a thank you to Black Pebble for something he did for me a little over a year ago. One of these days I'll get around to photographing the evidence and telling the story, but until then, the signature line will have to do.
So to clarify, you've totally misrepresented my opinions as well as misinterpreting a simple signature.
If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

EDIT: Since hubby thinks it may be a memory leak, I'll ask another question. Do you have the NCLauncher set to close once it has launched the game? Not just minimize to the tray, but close entirely. This could help a lot as well. I'd recommend following the steps in Hyperstrike's Guide: How to make the new NCSoft Launcher as unobtrusive as possible that is stickied here in this forum section.

Going to try to play again and turn down the settings as you stated hoping there is no further issue but not without protesting that I even have to turn them down lol

When I zone, the game crashes. When I try to enter my SG base, the game crashes. When I log out to the character selection screen, the game crashes. When I try to enter a mission, the game crashes. If I log back in, it tells me that the account is already logged in.
Occasionally it doesn't crash when I zone, but then this always happens: The loading screen appears with <5% loaded(small amount on the loading bar), it sits on that screen for a couple seconds, then it flashes a new loading screen and starts from 0% until it fills the bar and I actually zone. To me it seems like something's happening during zoning that causes a mapserver disconnect, but I don't have a B.S. in Computer Science so that's just a guess on my part. The game is unplayable at this point, it's just an exercise in frustration to even try. The bug that wiped most of my character's power trays was trivial compared to this, annoying, but I was still able to play the game on Tuesday. The failure cascade began Wednesday afternoon, and has continued ever since. If I stay in one zone, and just pick up gifts, the game runs fine. So I did that for about an hour last night until I grew so bored that I tried to enter a mission...and the game crashed just like I knew it would. This is ridiculous. It's not fun to receive such a nicely wrapped gift only to unwrap it and find a lump of coal. |
Tech Specs:
Windows 7 64 bit home premium
16 GB RAM (I do photoshop stuff...)
Launcher always closes automatically
Graphics card is a GeForce560Ti (Basically the best I could buy about 4 months ago)
Any help is greatly appreciated, the game is unplayable as is.
EDIT: I should add that if I do manage to get into a mission I can play seamlessly throughout the entire session until I need to load out of the mission, and then it is a crap shoot agian.
Also, I logged in safe mode and flawlessly zoned in/out about a dozen times in a row. Though to be honest, I have no idea exactly what safe mode does, and the graphics settings are beyond awful.

Kindrad, can I haz some of your memory?
Well, turned down the graphics as TX said and I've run about 4 mishes so far...zoning is okay atm but it wasn't consistently crashing on every zone yesterday or earlier today so we'll see!
I will post and let everyone know...and btw, I don't like the new graphics setting lol

I just set all the settings as Texas_Justice suggested for you as well (except for water, which I already had at medium). I logged into Oroborous, and then into my mission (defeat trapdoor) 6 times in a row (go in, turn around go out, etc) before a crash.
Again the blue bar was barely a blip across the screen, and it was not the mission map screen, but rather the white login screen (states and the robot) where it hangs (which I don't know if anyone has mentioned, but that is always the screen it hangs at for some reason.)
After the crash I received, "the account is already logged in", followed by "The game client was unable to connect to the login server" (twice in fact, before a successful server list).
I hope some of this is useful to someone with more knowledge than I.

Alrighty, well I crashed/mapserv'd/whatever you would call it...
I ran 4 mishes as well as SSA 4 and zoned in/out no issue other than the loading screen "blip" out and comes back again when the progress bar hits that 5% mark as someone else mentioned.
After that I went to the black screen of death and yet again had to ctrl+alt+dlt in order to close CoH and even see my desktop. Using the windows button does not work when this happens, only ctrl+alt+dlt.
Sometimes I don't get the black screen of death and it simply freezes on the loading screen showing circa 5% progress and I still can't use the windows button when that happens, need to ctrl+alt+dlt but at that point I can close out the task manager and right click on the game to close it out.
Either way it is still happening
EDIT: Went to log in and as other have said, it tells me the account is already logged in then says it cannot connect so when I finally do connect I zone into my base to take portal to RWZ and crash again so I give up for the night...GL to my fellow crashers!

EDIT: Also, often a pop-up "MapserverdisconnectedTryAgain" [OK]
Quitting out crashed the game, but keeps my account logged in (Reloading and relogging informs me "Your account is already online"). My character, however is now in the zone I was attempting to travel to when the Mapserver Disconnets.

Thanks to everyone that helped make me a welcomed part of the community, and for giving me over 3 years of some of the best gaming I've been able to take part in. May the next game bring many friendships and maybe reconnect to some old CoH friends.
Yep, same here. I get mapserver disconnects trying to enter missions or zoning. Was fine yesterday, just noticed this tonight. It's disconnected everytime I've zoned or tried to enter a mission.

I don't know about anyone else, but I think next time theres a Thursday patch I'm just gonna plan a night on the Xbox and wait for the inevitable patch to fix the patch.

I've also been getting disconnected when zoning. Only started happening today.
At least it's not just me, then. I've tried all the solutions so far suggested, and last night still crashed six times in under an hour, so I've given up. My only hope is that when they shut off the holiday event that the patch to do that undoes whatever the patch to turn it on broke. Until then, I guess I'm paying $15 this month not to play.
Lots of alts, mostly on Virtue
As OF this patch. I wasn't having them before. Now, I get lots of "Mapserver Disconnected", and a blank light blue screen instead of the login screen.

I am getting this issue as well. It appears when zoning, either between open world zones, zoning in and out of missions, occasionally upon loading up a new character into the game, and occasionally when going from the server select screen to the character list screen. Rather than a direct disconnect message, all but one time, my issue will manifest as the game hanging up at about 5% of the zone loaded (going by the zone loading bar, if that actually means anything). I then have to shut down the game from outside in order to get past the loading screen. The time I did not do this, after a very long wait (about 10 minutes) trying to enter a mission, I was kicked back to the open world zone with a mapserver disconnect message across the screen. Additionally, both nights I've experienced it, I've avoided the issue on the first character I've logged in and had it occur only on the second. Both times, I ultimately "fixed" the problem for the evening by logging off City of Heroes, then actually restarting the computer and logging back in. (The second night, I had to do this because one of the disconnects actually "took out" my machine's ability to recognize its internet connection.) Incidentally, even when I do that, the account is recognized as already logged in (though this might not happen if I waited long enough to autolog before trying again.)
I'm running 32-bit Vista, an NVidia GeForce 9800 GTX, with Ambient Occlusion on, Bloom on (I believe), and Depth of Field on.

I've been experiencing this exact same issue since Wednesday, even after yesterday's patch. I've pretty much given up on the game until the next patch.

I've not had any problems with the 11.9 drivers myself, running Win 7 64-bit.
As usual, I recommend following the established process of uninstalling drivers and CCC, rebooting to Safe Mode to run Driver Sweeper, then rebooting to normal Windows and installing the 11.9 drivers.

Also having game freeze up while zoning (to another zone or just leaving a mish or trial), 5% of load bar fills then nothing. Have to use task manager to shut game down. Also randomly happens when going from server selection to Charactor selestion screen.
This started yesterday. Dec 15th, after the publish.
Seems worse today, Friday the 16th. Really making game unplayable. Also having game freeze up trying to enter base. This needs a hotfix before we get into the weekend proper.
Individually, those settings might be OK, aside from Ambient Occlusion. It's a resource hog itself. But combining those settings on a card released 3 1/2 years ago can add up to cause issues.
