Doing MoM for the first time

Yesterday I had the chance to attempt the MoM a few times with other folk who had never done it. The first time, there was the typical 'rush and spam' approach, and when we all got wiped at the Penelope Mayhem stage and the timer ran out, I stopped to read Desdemona's and Metronome's briefings. it looks like they are advising players on how to do each stage. It's a shame that a lot of folk just seem to want to pile through the trials without paying any attention to any text. The learning experience over the course of the 4 or 5 attempts would have gonen much easier IMO if we'd stopped to take a breather and stuff, but it's the trial mindset I guess. I wonder why the devs put stuff like that in if nobody's going to read it.

The TPN attempt i got on afterwards, I was using the guide up on the guide forum to try to give instructions out ahead of the various phases. We made it to the bit where you have to keep HD alive, and then HD died. i did suffer an unfortunate DC just before that part, though, so it's understandable that our group didn't know exactly what to do, but so far my experience of the two new trials has me wishing that they weren't quite so gimmicky. The first mission in MoM with the random GMs is a lot of fun, I found. The Void/Penelope Mayhme bit, not so much.

Eco.

I agree that the TPN is much to complicated. The "gimmicks" pile on much to fast and furious with no explanation of what the league is supposed to do to succeed... and VERY little room for error. I got the impression from my experience that if the league doesnt know exactly what it needs to do at every phase and execute it perfectly, you fail.

MoM on the other hand is damn near perfect. Only one or two "gimmicks" at one time, and TIME to explain what's going to happen in between phases to get the league on the same page.

I like TPN well enough, but I'd do MoM every night.

I too ran that trial last night and we failed at the Yin stage.. I like it a lot...

The first stage against Malaise is nice. The 'roving pink patches of death' are not as harsh as the Blue Patches in the Ajax TF so they are a lot more managable. Also the GM fights in the middle is a nice change.. I will admit the Jade Spider popping up to help US scared the hell outta me.

The Yin stage didn't seem too hard either. We failed because we didn't have enough taunters/tanks to pull the Voids to Yin.. but when we could we got her down pretty fast. I Think I'm gonna enjoy the Trial! (Course it didn't help that I was doing it on my Human-only PB!)

I'm actually looking forward to the TPN.. sounds like a field day for all my stalkers.

TPN is actually far less complicated than MOM in terms of mechanics. It's just a matter of efficiency and tenacity. Both trials were completed during beta, after strategies were figured out. So please don't just say "It's too hard" then go back to running BAF and Lambda.

I dont want to.

The playerbase will force me to.

I do think that there is a problem with this trial. I ran it twice last night and when our League started fighting the random spawn GM's we had the Crystal Titan spawn in both trials. This was the second GM we had to fight. Unfortunately it was using the special damage from the trial it is from so no one had protection from his attacks. I swear it would one shot the entire team with his attacks. This was not fun at all! I think they need to tweak the Crystal Titan on this Trial or remove him from being able to spawn.

I don't think its a mater of it being too hard as much as its a matter of its not fun. BAF and LAM are in fact more fun and in the end the playerbase in the game will go back to what is more fun after running these newer trials once or twice, just like before.

The development team and this community deserved better than this from NC Soft. Best wishes on your search.

That DEFINITELY sounds like a bug right there, suggest bringing it up in one of the bug forums or PMing Zwill/Avatea to let them know.

Risk vs reward: if I can get a reward from doing something else more pleasant, I go do the more pleasant thing for the same end result.

I am using a huge monitor. I have a problem with so much crap being all over my screen, that the text tends to appear behind it. I have to have the chat widow up, the league window open, I got a huge "objectives" window that I don't even WANT covering the right side of my screen..... how and where am I s'posed to READ this text?

But props to Jade Spider. That's so Angry Red Planet. [I think that was the film, anyways].

It sounds like the only reason you care about any 'gimmicky-ness' is because your league/cat herd won't read the instructions. That's not the devs' fault.

I know some league leaders on Justice who know how to get people to pull their heads out of their rear ends with some well-delivered criticism. Seems like a useful skill to pick up.

The text from Des and metronome happens in a normal briefing-type window that every contact gives you, and it happens in the room with the portal generators to the various parts of the trial, so there's absolutely no reason for anything else to be cluttering your screen if you don't want it to. You can turn off your powers tray, your map, your chat window, and nothing will attack you while you read the briefings.

Of course, while you do that, you'll be left all alone because everyone else will be just clicking Desdemona and then zerging through the portals.

Er, I wasn't the leader on any of these. It wasn't my MoM we were doing, it was someone elses. Same with the TPN. I was just trying to maybe help our chances by suggesting we take it slower and read the info the trials were giving us.

I get the impression that some people don't even bother to click the little ? sign in the trials' objective windows to find out what to do at any particular stage either.

Eco.

Nope unfortunately once people see that "tank and spank" work, they keep trying to do that even if they keep failing....and then after they fail for the 10th time they say, "this trial stinks! lulz....let's do a BAF/Lambda!"

I really like the MOM trial; kind of wish more were like it in the regards that there is a "cool down" where the league leader can explain what's next and what not.

Oh and yes...I saw the thread title and was expecting certain posts/replies...and...let's say, "done in 1."

Edit:

Oh and, I asked in my strategy guide on the Liberty forums but I'll ask here too...

Does anyone know if a toon that has 2 Destiny powers and is doing the MOM trial; if you have, let's say Rebirth slotted/activated and then after a phase, can you wait 5 minutes for the cooldown timer to expire and then swap out Rebirth for Clarion?

I figure there's nothing attacking you, no rush (time wise) so...maybe you can do so? Only thing that would stop it would be an "ouroboros" zone thing that's attacking you preventing you from doing so....

Going to try tonight if I remember.
