So darkness control...

It looks like fun - I'll wait until I see the animations before I decide though: I have skipped otherwise good control sets simply because I couldn't stand the animations.

Is it sad that I'm more excited about Dark Assault, which will likely have every power I ever take out of both Dark Melee and Dark Blast, than I am about Dark Control?

Also, I want Possess renamed to Word of Command.

Ugh, no; Controllers and Doms should share every control set. Keeping a set to just one AT doesn't mean that AT is special, it just means you are artificially limiting the other AT. Doms are defined by the fact that they are Control/Assault, and play quite differently than Controllers. An Illusion Dom would not play like an Illusion Controller.

Again I am stating my personal opinion... I dont think every powerset should be proliferated amongst AT's.. I dont care about getting an Illusion Dom.. I am well aware of the differences in playstyles between Dom and Controllers owning several of each.. and several control types..

I suspect that most people want Illusion Doms because they realize how ridiculously overpowered they would be and therefore want one..

The hard things I can do--- The impossible just take a little bit longer.

If numbers are so much more important than a teammate who is fun to play with, forget about the game altogether and go play with a calculator instead. -Claws and Effect-

I'm sadly underwhelmed by Dark Control .... even the controller version sounds a bit better. I mean, compare it to Plant which has full awesomeness in Seeds and Creepers ... where is the wow factor in Dark Control? Haunt seems very single-target / killable (unlike creepers). The set seems to pair a CONE Fear and CONE Immob with a PBAOE stun?? That makes no sense. And the problem with Fear for locking things down is that things get at least 1-shot off at the first fear and any subsequent damage. I'm just not convinced the set has anything awesome to offer.

Maybe the "ZOMG!" T9 will turn things around.

As far as dark assault, I see it being a sucktastic mish-mash of what Blasters got plus mabe 1-2 other things. No way it will compete with Fire for ST/AOE damage.

You uh, you want to unpack this thought a little more?

I was saying the "Dark Affinity" controllers get sounds slightly more interesting with Fade and Soul Absorption.

Quote:
Fade is a short duration, long recharge, high defense boost to your entire team. It's intended to prevent team mates from being defeated when they're low on health. This will hopefully give you enough time to fire off a Twilight Grasp to heal them. Internally, I've heard it compared to "a weaker Moment of Glory for your team". I think that's fairly accurate.

Soul Absorption is a handy power that grants nearby team mates regeneration and recovery for each nearby defeated foe. This can spell a massive boost to regeneration and recovery with enough valid targets. Think Stygian Circle for your whole team, but instead of +hp/+end you get +regen/+recovery.

And probably miss; this isn't Terrorize, it's Fearsome Stare which has a strong -accuracy component.

i'm trying to understand this set. i don't feel safe already.

so far i have the choice of throwing out a fear/immob cone combo and hope the -to hit is enough to lessen the alpha. not to mention let's hope the cones aren't 45 degrees, but 60 degrees at least like Seeds of Confusion. if Fearsome Stare is gonna be that every spawn power then we have a problem.

or i have to go in a dangerous melee range and attempt a PBAoE stun? i'm hoping this is a location AoE if that's the case. with a low recharge might i add.

and even if this T9 nine will turn things around, waiting til lvl 32 (33 for slots) is gonna make for a lack-luster ride early on. but i don't see them breaking the trend of a pet. so dark servant or some new pet seems too logical. and that's not gonna make a difference in the style of play.

maybe after seeing the set in action i'll have a better understanding.

Why? My Corruptors and Masterminds use it for that purpose all the time and it's highly effective. And since the Haunt pets have a fear attack to stack with it you'll be able to Fear bosses too.

PBAoEs are by definition not Location AoEs, those are two different things. My first guess is that's it's the set's equivalent of Hot Feet; with a low magnitude stun instead of the slow effect that Hot Feet has. A combination of Death Shroud and Oppressive Gloom. That's just a guess though.

i see a trend already by just looking at the set. DARK/PSI/ICE.

dark's cones to mesh with psychic scream's cone.

dark's pbaoe stun to mesh with PSW pbaoe and stun secondary effect

drain psyche to recover from the alpha, added survivability, or just because you'll be in melee range anyway and it's an awesome power

ice mastery for softcap def which will make taking to the alpha not an issue. and will allow you to jump in melee range without worry (assuming Heart of Darkness isn't a location power) and casting a fear power first not so bad. plus hoarfrost will add to your survivability too.

just a thought. seeing how dark assault won't be anything new, it's safe to assume a lot of single target powers and some cones attacks

yeah you're right about the pbaoe and location aoe's.

Going by memory here so power order is wrong off but powers were:
Single Target Immobilize
Single Target Hold
Cone style AoE Immobilize
Fearsome Stare (from Dark Miasma)
An PBAoE Stun
Haunt, a power that summons two temporary pets that will attack the foe you target and damage + terrorize him.
A targeted AoE hold power (it sounded like it was a patch power similar to Distortion Field)

The last power was not announced and I'm forgetting one other power.

Additionally Controllers will get Dark Affinity and Dominators will get Dark Assault.

Dark Affinity is basically Dark Miasma with Fearsome Stare and Petrifying Gaze removed. One of the replacement powers was a team wide high magnitude, short duration Defense buff (the comparison used was to Moment of Glory) but I forget the other.
I remember a ST dark confuse power too - it's what sold me to the set.

That is because Terrify does it's damage and then .25 seconds later slaps on the fear effect thus letting you eat the whole Alpha with no mitigation of any kind.

Fearsome Stare on the other hand doesn't deal damage so the Fear locks down the mob and no return fire. You get the added bonus of a tohit debuff of anywhere from 15-23% depending on slotting and AT mods to take the sting out of any return fire once the mobs do take damage and the fear gets broken.

Ah. That changes a lot then with my outlook on fearsome stare as a cornerstone power. I still hope they increased the cone to match SoC.

So you're not feeling 'special'?

Please buff Ice Control.

Looks like Haunt is going to be an important part of how Dark Control controls (taunt and fear). Synapse did say you can buff the ghosts, which makes them better on Controller since trollers have support secondary.

The pbaoe stun is a bit annoying.

And even with domination, Fear isn't a hard control.

What's left is to normalize all Assassin Strikes and improve Stalker's old sets (Claw, MA and EM)! You don't need to bring back the missing PbAoE attack. You just need to make the existing ones better! For example, make Slice a WIDER and LONGER cone.

Fearsome stare is hard enough initially - it WILL break up an alpha and possible prevent it depending on what you do next. Remember, its not terrify with its 0.25 second delay on the fear that means you WILL take the alpha, or even spectral terror which appears to be softer than it is because the psuedo-pet attacks individual targets with a power that causes them to flee for 2 seconds before they cower in fear again.

I am wondering how well a dark/dark dominator will be able to debuff to hit. Assuming they leave the to hit debuf in FS and add to hit debuff as a secondary effect to the other powers in dark control/assault a dark/dark dominator could be fairly good as a debuffer, if not in a dark/dark controller or corruptor/defenders class. Open up with FS, hold one big target, confuse another and then start attacking and you probably won't see a lot of return fire. Combine that with siphon life/life drain (depending on which they put in dark assault) or drain psyche and you could be extremely survivable.

This set strikes me as similar to ice control, if not as soft on the control - a fear is going to be more of an alpha breaker than ice slick + arctic air, although whether the set can break up the follow up attacks well enough remains to be seen. If the PBAoE stun is on a decent recharge (90s or less) and has a good radius, you could leverage it after FS for larger groups and rely on hold + confuse + haunt as a followup to the fear on smaller ones.

Fearsome stare has less degrees in the cone than SoC, but it's deeper. It's very easy to hit an entire spawn with it.

Ah, okay, so by 'Dark Control' you meant 'Dark Assault.'

It sounds like the haunts will behave like Gremlins...except gremlins also have an aura. Gremlins cycle through brawl and Jolting Chain.
