Well, the health issues of the breed. They have breathing issues, their eyeballs are prone to popping out of their skull and need to be manually re-inserted. The same gene that gives the tail its curl can lead to spine problems.

That's the first time I've heard of the eye thing. I had a pug for 14 years and the only problem she had was the breathing. My grandpa bought brandy for me when I was born, I still miss her. She's the only reason why I tolerate dogs.

Not necessarily every pug will do the eye thing, but it is an issue like how German shepherds have a tendency towards hip problems later in life.

Every "pure" breed has some kind of problem, which is why if I get another dog (and I would really really like one) it will be a cross. In recent years I have become ideologically opposed to the whole concept of pedigree breeds.

My wife and I have a purebred Chesapeake Bay Retriever.

So far she's been perfectly healthy. We made sure of her pedigree before we got her. Her line was bred to be hunting dogs, and not necessarily show dogs, so the long term health of them was the primary concern of the breeder.

I have an issue with some pedigreed breeds as well. Particularly the ones where the breeder is more concerned about the dog's appearance than it's quality of life due to any health issues it may end up with.

That's why chihuahuas are usually such neurotic messes. They're bred to be tiny, so all those traits that would normally be eliminated by natural selection are being passed on from generation to generation.

Still doesn't piss me off as much as the news story I saw about the woman who is deliberately breeding deformed cats.....and that there are people who actually buy the poor things. If you want to be angry about it as well, google "twisty cats" and it should pop up. It's horrible.

Looks like a very nice breed of dog.

The problem as I see it is that to continue with our current definitions of pedigree and pure breeds means a dangerously restricted gene pool. The various pedigree associations try to keep the breeds healthy by only allowing mating between animals that have a defect free line back to their grandparents. While this "largely" prevents immediate problems it is not a solution. The only solution is a larger gene pool. Which is why I think the public should be encouraged to buy cross breeds and we should drop the idea of "pedigrees"

LOL yes Brandy was the dogs name. It's a shame though, brandy the liquor, would be awesome after 26 years. He did buy me a 20ga. shotgun that day too so when I was old enough I could learn to hunt.

.....

having seen one of the pages regarding "twisty cats," whoever does such a thing, to dogs OR cats, or to ANY HELPLESS ANIMAL should burn in the seventh level of Hell. Not funny, not cute. Not adorable. Not acceptable. May the breeders of such be reborn in Hell with the exact same traits they breed helpless animals for.

Those are strong words, but that page brough tears to my eyes and yeah..... burn in Hell, perpetrators of such horror. Poor little catlings.
