katana

So after lurking here for quite a while, I have not seen any katana brute discussions.

So I wonder, whats up with that? Someone enlighten me on why I have yet to see one in game. Is it really that much worse on a brute then a scrapper? or is there some other reason?

I ask because i have this inkling to make a new katana character. my only one right now is a scrapper, /sr with stupefy levels of rech, and I would like to try a katana character that is more.... normal, like has more then 3 attacks. Thought maybe a brute would change up how the set plays too. Was thinking maybe kat/dark or kat/fire maybe.

People don't talk much about the sword sets for Brutes. Not sure why, they're just as viable on a Brute as they are on a Scrapper. I took a Broadsword/Electric Armor Brute from 1 to 50 and enjoyed it a lot. It's awesome. You won't be dealing quite as much damage as your Scrapper variants, especially if your Scrapper has a ton of recharge. However, you will be sturdy as hell. Parry/Divine Avalanche work even better on a Brute as they have more HP and can hold aggro better. If you're going to make a sword Brute, I recommend making them a more tank-oriented. Of course... you can have the best of both worlds if you slot for a bunch of recharge

Just for a point of reference, I was able to solo Chimera fairly quickly. This is the only AV I've bothered to try on my own (I happened to have the mission). So if there's a damage difference, it's not huge.

Scrappers are only noticeably better, damage wise, with /shield and with kinetic melee in my experience. So go crazy.

The sword sets aren't talked about much here probably because they've been talked to death in the scrapper forums over the years. Plus most new threads are about ss/fire.

From what I hear, gloom is an awesome power for brutes in any attack chain. In fact, it's practically a standard. But it causes redraw, which is possibly why you don't hear katana discussed that often. I really want to make a Katana/Elec/Soul, but I don't know if I should go scrapper or brute myself. I'm curious as to how much time is in fact eaten up by redraw

Kat/Regen

Soft Capped Melee, Ranged, AoE defense + self heals, IH and MoG. >.>

Your character does not have capped defense. Depending on your AT the cap is between 175% - 225%. Your defense is not teal in the combat window, it can go higher. STOP SAYING IT IS CAPPED! The correct term is Soft Cap.
I enjoy playing in Mids. I specialize in Melee Characters, other AT's usually bore me.

With hundreds of hours logged on a bs/regen scrapper I can honestly say it's not as sexy as it appears. Kat/WP, though, is golden.

/Soul is great for Katana Scrappers (especially regen) because they get Shadow Meld to aid with defense.

Redraw is not a big deal for me (I have a Kat/Regen), at least it doesn't bother me nearly as much as it bothered on my Beam Rifle toon, but I don't plan on taking non-Katana attacks.

just one question which power to take:

flashing steel...a cone attack with 6sec recharge / base dmg 41.71

or

gamblers cut...a quick single target attack with 3 sec recharge / base dmg 35.03

Ive just went with gc from 1-32lvl...just respecced into flashing steel...and now iam missing a bit this single target filler attack....but big mobs go down much faster with the other one...

and iam still undetermined which way to go on...maybe anyone got some advice?

i cant take both

People don't talk about Katana because Brutes get Super Strength, which is the best melee set in the game. Pretty much all there is that needs to be said.

Well if you didn't take gambler's cut, then that means you had to take sting of the wasp. My advice is to drop sting of the wasp and get gambler's cut because it's DPA is a bit higher. And since they all recharge rather quickly and you already have access to all your attacks, it shouldn't mess up an attack chan for you.

Sure you can - and you should - take both.

While the slower and stronger attack is *usually* better than the faster and weaker one for your first-level pick, some sets - Katana, Electrical and Stone, for brutes - favour the faster one.

As previously suggested, drop Sting of the Wasp, get both Gambler's Cut and Flashing Steel.

believe it or not...but there are people who are not interested in always playing the best set with best damage, best armors...they choose their powers cause of style and concept...

SS ist pretty good...but each powerset got his own benefits, depends on the situation...enough said

@pyro...thx for info

I'll second/third/fourth everything that's been said for Katana and Gambler's Cut. It does seem backwards, but if you have a seamless attack chain, GC is better. I only would take SotW on a Stalker.

And interesting on the Elec/ and Stone/ being the same... This changes things for my Elec/Fire Brute, Elec/SR Scrap, and potential Stone/ Brute and Scraps.... This is between just the Tier 1 and 2 for those respective sets, right?

Yes. In Elec, Charged Brawl is much, much better than Havoc punch. In fact, Jacobs Ladder is a better single target attack then Havoc Punch.

Before the animation changes to stone around i12, Stone Mallet was better than Stone Fist. Now the long animation makes it inferior for dps.

It doesn't get talked about because everyone is talking about min maxing SS/FA on a brute. I have a fun kat/wp brute that I use in cebr farms. It's not as effective as claws because of the different early aoe skill but it still holds it's own and looks crazy cool, especially with ninja run.
