Discussion: The City of Heroes Freedom Player Summit - 11/19/11
If I can get there early enough Friday night, a repeat of the Justice dinner would be fantastic. And yes, TJ, I'd join you for the In-n-Out lunch break... if you wouldn't mind having a youngun' like me along, that is.
But flying down there means no brownies. Oh, well.

So, I should plan to hit In 'n' Out on the midday break. Gotcha.
I think I can find a few people willing to join me at that venue. Or, I could go back to Schaub's for another Fred's Steak sandwich. Hmmmm. |
And two HeroCons and the M&G, and I still haven't done bacon waffles. <.<

When I wake up, well you know I'm gonna wake
I'm gonna wake up here at home away from you
And on that weekend, well you know I'm gonna go
I'm gonna go to work 'cause that's what I've to do
'Cause I won't walk 1000 miles
And I won't walk 1000 more
Just to get some cheesy costume code
And dine on rum-soaked raisin s'mores

Goodbye may seem forever
Farewell is like the end
But in my heart's the memory
And there you'll always be

Actually, I'm thinking maybe The Creamery, though on a Saturday it might be a little crowded.
|
That said, the Creamery sounds good! Which one do you like? I see two locations. Once in the Stanford Shopping Center, and the other in the downtown area.
And two HeroCons and the M&G, and I still haven't done bacon waffles. <.< |
I'm thinking we find out where the FPS is before we make lunch plans on Saturday. I don't go into Palo Alto much, but my recollection is parking can be a pain in certain areas.

Oh man... if I hadn't just lost my job, I might've loosened my purse strings for a second trip to Cali this year. As it stands, it's just not possible for me to travel from NC for a day of CoH awesomeness.
Maybe my costume will win that contest and I'll get flown out for a Positron Flowbee cut...? >_>

And I agree. Knowing where the venue for the FPS is will help in the planning.
If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.
Black Pebble is my new hero.
Zwillinger, will more info be posted next week about the costume code as well as your allusion to selling these codes on the Paragon Market?
I'd like to know what the costume is you are offering, and whether it will be available in the future for a few bucks before I commit to spending hundreds of dollars to fly across the country.

Well I live in Mountain View so I have no excuse not to go... tho I might have Sharks tickets for that night. >_>
ed. Nope no Sharks that night.
As with others, the ridiculously short notice, the timing, and the location (mainly the expense of getting there) all conspire to prevent me from attending.
Note to Paragon:
If you want to hold events in-game on a couple weeks notice or just pop them out ad hoc, that's your choice.
But trying to put on REAL WORLD events with a month's notice is basically telling people you don't REALLY want them attending.
This isn't you and the rest of the Paragon staff deciding to go out for a brewski after work, and this sort of off-the-cuff scheduling is ridiculous.
Let's be honest. This isn't a "Players Summit". This is a Bay Area Meet and Greet.
It makes sense that the big event is in the Bay Area since that's where the Developers are. It's much more difficult for them to try to stop all work so all of the employees can make an event outside of that area. Not to mention the expense.
They have been branching out the past couple of years and attending other events around the country and having M&G's while they are there. IIRC, they've been to PA and NYC for cons and had M&G's there. |
They hit 3-4 coastal cons a year. Two of which are in their back yard.
The other 98% of the country and the rest of the world doesn't exist for them.
One of my goals since coming here to Paragon has been to revive Hero Con in some form, and I believe that with the FPS, we have such an event, but with a total focus on communication with our Super Fans .
|
That's great. What about the rest of the country living outside of the Bay Area?
GenCon doesn't.
Yes, these are not your primary markets (comic book fans). But they're still your secondary market (gamers).
Bleating about how expensive it is to attend these cons is a no-go either.
It's at LEAST as expensive to go to NYC and other coastal cons.
And if you're REALLY concerned with keeping costs down (drayage, temp storage, etc), I can put you in touch with people who've been doing packtrain duty for these two cons for years.

A month's notice is not nearly enough. Not nearly. And the weekend before one of the biggest holidays of the year? Are you kidding me?
I thought the notice before the previous HeroCons was short. This is just ridiculous.
My job requires a minimum of six month's notice before I can take a period of time (i.e. two or more days), off. I'm sure I'm not alone in that.

Since they are passing up the opportunity to attend Dragon*Con in order to attend PAX, I would tend to believe you've got what they consider their primary and secondary markets reversed.
|
DragonCon is primarily a Fantasy/SciFi/Gaming con with smatterings of other genres and markets. Comics fall into that "smattering" category.
PAX is primarily a gamer con.
Additionally, PAX's West Coast show is right in their metaphorical back yard.
Bingo.

The weekend before Thanksgiving?
Really?
REALLY????
The weekend before Thanksgiving!
Who thought that one up? That's just dumb.

I would love to attend one of these events, but as someone living 2,000+ miles away, I need more than just a month's notice to plan and save for a trip to the west coast. It's even more astonishing that the chosen date is the weekend before Thanksgiving, one of the busiest and most expensive weekends for air travel in the U.S. save for the weekend after the holiday.
To those who can go, I hope you have fun. Hopefully next year there'll be some love for the denizens of the Eastern time zone.
