I find it difficult to hatch my insidious machinations when the world does not exist. Many kittens have perished in the interim, and much of the fur is still in my teeth. My dental hygienist will likely cry on my next visit. I hope I won't have to aggressively silence him, as it is difficult to find a good dentist with industrial strength hardware. Kittens, while seemingly innocuous, are murder on the molars, you know... but so sinfully decadent!

And to some of you other forumites... you realize, I'm sure, that as often as people might post a repetitive topic, that responses like "Another of the same thread..." or "This doesn't belong here", or "The OP's title is blah-blah-blah" is not unlike the behavior you choose to chide. It is, in my opinion, a tad hostile and trite... generally I can respect that. Even still... this I find irksome, as I only want to hear admonitions from one dictator... myself. So how 'bout we each agree to rule our own fiefdoms, and only try to take over others when need for expansion demands it? After all... this council is to exchange ideals and information as well as being the occasional sounding board. If there is truly a violation we have moderators to handle it. It's the greatest perk of being dictators after all... delegating authority while alighting our thrones and gobbling up kittens. Perhaps those predilections are not shared though. Hmm... a world without kitten crunching... too horrible to ponder.

Well... I really need to mop up all this kitten juice before it shorts out another 'puter.

Regards,

Priesteater.
If I knew how to get ahold you I would send you a tabby, a nice chubby one...

Wow. Way to false-choice it.

There's a few more options. Like they COULD let critical bugs go until the next maintenance window. But people would then gripe about letting critical bugs go unpatched for more than a day.

Some of them are issues that DIRECTLY affect gameplay (like Praetorian free-to-players running into the old level cap.

Bugs like these are not something you can plan every eventuality for. You can make general plans. And they HAVE. When these show-stoppers come up, they patch IMMEDIATELY.

I'd rather that then find out that I have to wait another week for a maintenance window because of a horrific bug revealed 10 minutes after the close of the last maintenance window.

It comes down to this.

Some people think ANY downtime for maintenance is unacceptable.
Some people think the amount of downtime for maintenance CURRENTLY is unacceptable.
Some people think that the amount of downtime for maintenance currently is irritating but if it patches bugs, c'est la vie.
And some freaks beg for more downtime so they can de-graft themselves from their chairs for a few seconds.

Wow, really? You've been on that 100 PP path for awhile...

You get 1200 PP for $15, so that request is for essentially $1.25. So, either you really aren't that disturbed by all the downtime or there's something specific for 100 PP you want. Maybe there's another reason for that amount, but I'm not sure what it is...

I find your lack of signature disturbing.

Rubbish. Total rubbish.

I understand you don't like threads ranting and complaining, but drawing over the top examples doesn't help.

People will quit if they feel the downtime exceeds they ability to play the game the majority of times they want. You don't have to try and paint a picture that all people who feel that way are being whining entitlement based chumps. Call people out if they are being whining chumps, but that's not what you are doing.

It shows clearly you are coming from a position of privilege in regards to downtime and not prepared to accept others viewpoints. You also lose any credibility in claiming others using hyperbole aren't worth listening to.

edit: And to add before words are inserted into my meaning, I find the downtime very annoying, but at this stage I understand why there's a lot of it. I also think paragon has in the past has successfully minimalised the downtimes for those of us in Aus time zones, and I'm trusting it will go back to normal sometime.

This is absolutely pathetic!
Your overuse of punctuation marks has depleted the reserves which the coders and servercorns need to properly utilize/metabolize the code that keeps the game running. Please try to ration your use of punctuation to no more than two marks per ending of a sentence, but preferably you could make do with only one per sentence termination. The servercorns need those marks to function and the supply is not limitless within any given increment of time. Thank you for your understanding.

It seems to me that NCSoft must weigh the benefits of providing critical patches as soon as they can--especially during delicate periods surrounding huge game updates like Freedom/Convergence--against the possibility of losing players who are so annoyed by the downtime that they give up on the game for good. My guess is that from an overall numbers perspective, the benefits far outweigh the projected losses, and NCSoft will continue to perform necessary maintenance at appropriately critical junctures.

If a subscriber really truly is traumatized by all the downtime I'm sure they can write a complaint to NCSoft customer support and get a partial refund. However, I'm pretty sure that complaining about it here is pretty much next to useless, unless the goal is simply to rant for its own sake.

That's why we had a head start - the time between i21 release and Freedom release. So far since freedom's releaed we've only had the what, 2 hours downtime? (Besides Defiant being... defiant).

No, it looks like some people are coming from a position of levelheadedness in regards to downtime. This is a GAME. It's not my bank, broker, phone company or electric company.

Okay, it seems you're levelheaded about the downtime also. So what was that "position of privilege" BS all about?

I just hope that 200MB patches aren't going to be a weekly thing to add new game assets that can be bought at the store. I'm getting tired be able to play only a couple of days between massive downloads.

It's not so much their frequency.

It's the quantity of them generated (as in multiple discussion threads), all saying the same exact thing. As such, they outnumber the downtimes by roughly an order of magnitude. If not more.

Not really complaining, just find it amusing that these threads keep showing up. You know, making a joke about it? Maybe I should have put a smiley at the end?

The suspicion is that the download was mostly the Halloween event.

Unfortunately, those of us with a lick of sense have too high an expectation from those without a lick of sense. As a result, we are sorely disappointed and genuinely confused when they go into a nerd rage about obviously necessary things.

Personally, I blame today's "instant gratification" society.

Or, they could have just woken up and stubbed their toe while getting out of the shower after spilling hot coffee (even though they don't drink coffee) on their lap when they ate a breakfast of cold lumpy oatmeal and realized that they were out of any kind of sweetening agent.

What? It could happen.

That and the fanatic determination to misinterpret what is meant by the phrase, "The customer is always right." combined with grossly exaggerated entitlement issues.

Let's just sort out the complaints once and for all...

Quote:
There's been a lot of downtime recently, the downtime is right in my prime playtime, I haven't been able to play the game as much as I'd like. ;.;
I sympathize! This totally sucks. I love this game too and I hate not being able to play it.

Quote:
I have paid for a month of access and I'm not getting what I paid for! I *deserve* to have extra days refunded!
You didn't pay for a month of access, you paid for access to the service whenever it's up during one month. Read the EULA. No, seriously, read it. It's not "a lame excuse", it is a contract that states exactly what you paid them for and what you can and cannot expect in return for your money.

Quote:
This is poor business sense, I may be lenient but others won't, if you carry on like this you will lose players.
So you think they haven't realised that downtime will make players angry and possibly lead to people leaving, and they urgently need your post in the forum to explain this to them? "Of course! We should be trying to have *less* downtime, not *more*! How could we have been so blind? Thank you, AngryPoster!"

Quote:
The Devs should be doing something about all this downtime!
The Devs (well, the server techs) *are* doing something. That's why there's downtime. They are taking the servers offline and doing things to make them work better.

Quote:
Well they should be doing something to make there be less downtime.
Oh? And what exactly can you do to CoH game servers that will make them work better that can be done while they're still running, without risking any data loss (the data, let me remind you, is someone's character, with all their costumes and IOs and badges)? And also fits within the budget they have without having to make cuts elsewhere?

Quote:
Well...
TRICK QUESTION! You don't know. The Devs do. They know their budget and their servers. They *know* additional downtime will make more players lose playtime, and that players who don't get to play when they wanted will be angry players.

They still went ahead with the downtimes, so that means whatever players are going to leave because of the downtimes are already accounted for and deemed "acceptable losses".

In short:

We all know it sucks when you can't play the game. But if the Devs and server techs decided the servers need more downtime, no amount of angry posting will make there be less downtime.
