Friday's Costume Contest: Historical Figures...with a Twist!

Hey everyone,

Friday’s costume contest theme is Historical Figures (with a twist)! So here’s a bit of background on this wackily-themed contest so you can get those creative costume creator juices flowing!

A few years ago, Positron and I were creating characters for some mission content. He created a very short, coppery looking character called “Bad Penny” that looked suspiciously like Abraham Lincoln.

Bad Penny’s Description read:

“When a Circle of Thorns ritual in Perez Park accidentally enchanted a long forgotten coin, Bad Penny was born. His mean disposition came from many years trapped in coin jars, change trays, and the fact that he could no longer be used to even purchase a gumball.”
I thought this was perfectly hilarious and a great theme for a costume contest because there are millions of choices in historical figures! AAAAAND the creativity and flexibility comes in when you use the words “with a twist” because things like time, dimension, history – all that goes out the window! How utterly and amazingly creative and unique can you be while at the same time clear enough that people see your costume (and perhaps your description) and say, “Ohmigosh, I totally get it!”

What kind of Villain would Marie Antionette be if she'd kept all that cake to herself? A Rogue-y Michaelangelo after spending too many years with paint fumes? How about a Praetorian Einstein if he’d ever discovered a brush? The choice is yours, go nuts!

We’re super jazzed about seeing what you guys come up with on Friday (September 16th) starting at 11:00 AM PDT/2:00 PM EDT/7:00 PM BST/20.00 CEST on Exalted server in Pocket D.

Have fun!

So it's OK now to have historical figures with a twist because there was a time long ago that they got hit with the generic hammer, with great abandon by the GMs when reported.

It'll be nice to recreate my Cyborg Lincoln. He's not really Lincoln, just one of the first bionic men made by the government in the 70s who had recently suffered a brain infection due to his aging optical implant and now thinks he's a reanimated through technology Abe Lincoln. A black colored chin plate makes a passable Lincoln beard.

I also had an Einstein energy blaster who used teleport and a Hawkins in a power suit grav controller. This was all back in late 2004/early 2005.

My Elec/Elec Blaster, Honest Abe 2.0, is one of the few Blasters I can actually stand to play.

He's a robotic replica of Abraham Lincoln, powered by a motor that generates electricity whenever he tells the truth. Though he was originally intended to be an educational android who taught children about Lincoln's presidency and life in the Civil War era, a decimal error in the construction of his motor caused him to generate far too much power with the need for frequent discharge. With few other options available, his manufacturers traded him to Paragon City as a nonlethal deterrent to super-powered crime in exchange for tax credits.

He now roams Steel Canyon, educating purse snatchers about life in the mid 1800s and, more importantly, what a burst of 20,000 volts feels like, and why you don't mess with the citizens of Paragon City when Honest Abe 2.0 is around.

Sadly, I didn't notice these until this announcement, and there's just no way for me to make 26 in the time available, especially with having to sleep and actually show up at work. I'll just have to tell the reader to imagine the other henchmen.

Doh... I completely forgot today's contest was at this time.
I made a character and raced over and got to Pocket D 1 around 2:50PM ET... but there were no more red names.

Ah well... I saw plenty of great costumes and many joined me to dance with the Monster Of Pop.

So THAT'S who created Bad Penny!!!

I had that character for months, possibly years, before it was introduced in game!!

Give me back that name, it's integral to Coin's backstory!!!

Positron was in PD 1, Noble Savage was in PD 2 and War Witch was originally in PD 3 and ended up goin to PD 1 and 2. We had all instances covered.

It seems the red messaging announcing the teleportation of all quarter finalists didn't make it to all maps though, we apologise for that and will make sure we check that all instances can see it in the future so that you don't wait.

And while I'm here, here are screenshots of the selected few who made it to the secret lair!

Let's start with our Quarter Finalists:

And our winning trio!

Ranking 1st was Quiet Conqueror in all his peaceful splendour:

Not far behind, Rommel, our desert fox, became our 2nd place winner:

And winning 3rd prize was the spooky Great Caesar's Ghost:

Thank you all for your attendance and for putting so much effort into reviving those famous and infamous figures of our past!

You really shouldn't make tribute characters if you don't even know the name of the person you're making a tribute to.

It's Hawking. Not Hawkin, not Hawkins, not Hawkings. It's. Hawking.

Sorry but people getting his name wrong is a major pet peeve of mine.

Assuming he meant who you think he meant. I'm not saying he didn't, but people jumping to conclusions is a pet peeve of mine. (If you had insider knowledge, then I'll just have to be peeved at myself.)

'I don't like the look of it at all,' said the King: 'however, it may kiss my hand if it likes.'
'I'd rather not,' the Cat remarked.
'Don't be impertinent,' said the King, 'and don't look at me like that!' He got behind Alice as he spoke.
'A cat may look at a king,' said Alice.

I considered that but believed it to be the less likely of the two possibilities. I certainly don't see anyone on this inexhaustive list that it could possibly be.

Jumping to conclusions is only bad if you're wrong.

Sorry, for the mistype and didn't catch it.

Of course the idea was based around this story on the Onion.

Not only that but at least a couple of quarter/semifinalists are missing.

Didn't one have something to do with a boat?

Why yes, I think you're right. Wasn't he the ghostly Executive Officer of the Titanic?

That's right; Captain Edward John Smith! Sure, he had the bio suggesting the Ghost Ship in Talos / IP was the RMS Titanic. Clever concept.

I see he still didn't heed his mother's warning, and after making that face too long he froze that way. :-)
