IOing a granite tank - worth it?

So I came up with a stone tank build that basically negated the drawbacks of granite armor (asside from not being able to sprint). Will cost a bunch of inf to build though, and I was wondering what people's opinions of IO'd granite tanks were, not on any specific point, just if they felt IO'ing was worth it.

I would prefer to see your build before giving an unqualifird yes, but my IO'ed Stone-Fire-Pyre is my favorite Alt.

I don't know what you mean by a "granite tank" -- avoiding all your protective powers except Granite Armor, Rooted, Mud Pots, Earth's Embrace, and Stone Skin, perhaps?

My guy is a "stone tank" -- he has all primary powers, and only uses Granite situationally. This allows him to 3x4 the Gift of the Ancient's Set. I.e. 4-slotted in 3 powers:

* Rock Armor (dfn/end, dfn/end/rech, dfn, and dfn/run_speed)
* Crystal Armor (ditto)
* Minerals (ditto)

Granite Armor can also be slotted with 3 members of the set (dfn/end, dfn, and dfn/run_speed). I 6-slot it, with the other 3 slots going for resistance.

In addition to 3-slotted Swift, the run-speed penalty of Granite and/or Rooted is drastically attenuated. The dfn/run_speed "gifts" add 30% to run speed (7.5% each). It doesn't let you jump, or attenuate the damage and recharge penalties of Granite, but you can lead your team without everyone wondering why they are snails.

Now add the total set bonuses of 8% recovery (2% * 4), 10% fire resistance (2.5% * 4), and 5.4% max endurance (1.8% * 3). You can see that any endurance problems your character might have are pretty much eliminated by the double-pronged cure of more recovery and more total endurance. Since my guy runs Assault and Tactics, this benefit is very important.

Since my guy also has Brimstone Armor, he can also slot Steadfast_Protection:res/dfn, adding 3% global defense. While less important with Granite up, it's a very nice addition to my normally-up armors (Rock, Brimstone, and, when there is significant incoming psi damage, Minerals). This IO can also be added to Granite but if you use 3 slots for defensive IOs, your total resistance will be degraded.

So yes, these are two ways in which IOing a stone tank is definitely "worth it".

Mine is 'well IOed', in old days pre-purple it was among the most expensive characters, having 5 LotG's, 3 numina's (or whatever the recharge bonus gives), along with a few other sets (PbAOE set and melee), all focused towards regen and recharge.

I'm at 67.5% recharge bonus now without any weird additional power to get certain slots, although i'm a perma-granite.

Only Psi damage remains a slight issue (with psi-only i still can go rooted/minerals), other then that he's just playing fine.

Depends on playstyle. I have no probs with TP or holding aggro. So for me there would be no rush and some other toon might get done first, one that might earn inf at a quicker rate.

It just occurred to me that this res/dfn IO could also be added to Stone Skin, with minimal impact on a "granite tank".

Putting IOs in swift will do more for your run speed than the run speed bonuses that you're killing your build getting by taking innecessary powers. Another thing is for recharge times I'd of took haste and been done. Without a doubt in my mind an SO build with the right power choices could do more.

Um, last I checked hasten isn't perma by itself, especially with granite armor on, so I would have long periods with slow recharge, which is what this build is trying to avoid. You're right that swift deserves a second slot though.

Stone is a typed-defense build. You're using positional-defense sets like Touch of Death and Mako's Bite that give half value for typed defenses. Just for starters, yank all those and replace with sets picked for typed defense bonuses.

No one is talking to you about permaing hasten.

I swapped one of your powers for haste and saw an immediate improvement to the recharge of Earths Embrace with granite on. I am right on both accounts.

i love my IOd dark/stone brute (and yes i run in granite 100% of the time unless im exemping too low then i just use rock armor since brutes are forced to take it)

Those sets are just there for the damage bonuses. I didn't put enough of them in the powers to actually get to the defense bonus.

New Dawn - Are you suggesting using hasten just as a way to get earth's embrace to recharge faster? I'm confused what it will do for me if it isn't perma

One of the biggest differences a little thing made in my gaming was putting hasten on auto.
With only 3 vanilla rech IOs, you have 120s of up time and ~48 sec of down time.

It makes a difference.

With granite on, hasten's recharge is around 90 seconds as far as I can tell.

Not the best strategy, IMO.

I think you'd be better off doing the following:

1) slot for the soft-cap in Granite
2) slot for recharge/run speed bonuses
3) slot for the S/L/E/NE soft-cap out of Granite

I think damage bonuses run a distant fourth in priority.

In your current build, you have a ton of slots and a bunch of powers that I think are wasted. I can see the argument for Maneuvers and Assault, but Tactics, Vengeance, and the Stealth pool are *not* good choices, IMO.

If you drop those five powers you'll have room for the Fighting Pool, Hasten and Assault. Hasten won't be up as much as it would be in a non-Granite toon, but it'll still put a huge dent in the recharge debuff. I really think it would be foolish to skip it.

Here's a quick rework of your build. I left as many of the damage bonuses in as I could, and I didn't try to soft-cap out of Granite since I didn't know how much you wanted that. (I'd go for that before damage bonuses, as I noted above, but I know not everyone would.)

Save your money and or IO's for a more gimpy tank. Granite doesn't need it, Maybe fire? or DA. But a granite tank with IO's would be a waste. IMO. Unless of course you wish to run without granite for the whelps you might encounter on a mission or to make things harder. Either way, if you're going Granite, why bother?

Whether or not it's a waste is up to the individual, but I found it entertaining to see what I could do (some time ago, not in response to this thread). Softcapped Defense vs all damage types but Psionic, capped HP and 95 HP/sec regen with permanent Earth's Embrace. Since I don't like teleporting or lumbering all the time, there's softcapped S/L Defense and 62.5 HP/sec regen without Granite and Rooted so I can Superspeed about. It was affordable enough that I don't care if it's overkill for most situations.

'I don't like the look of it at all,' said the King: 'however, it may kiss my hand if it likes.'
'I'd rather not,' the Cat remarked.
'Don't be impertinent,' said the King, 'and don't look at me like that!' He got behind Alice as he spoke.
'A cat may look at a king,' said Alice.

Strongly disagree. IOs can significantly mitigate the runspeed and recharge debuffs, which for me makes the difference between playing a Stone tank or not. The fact that IOs can also help you soft-cap the most common damage types out of Granite is just gravy.

I would say yes, because it will make the tank more fun (significantly) and even tougher (slightly).

Having sucky runspeed and recharge, to me, is not fun. My stone/stone has 5 Luck of the Gamber +recharge and 5 Gift of the Ancients +runspeed (plus additional set bonuses for each). And Hasten, of course. As a result, in situations where he doesn't need Granite, he's dashing all over the battlefield laying a serious smackdown due to all that recharge. To support that attack rate, he's got almost +40% recovery (not counting Stamina or the Perf Shifter +END proc).

To make him a little tougher, after getting the stuff above, I also added in about +140% regen. Sure, that's not really a lot but when you have 89% resist to EVERYTHING BUT PSI, a little extra regen goes a long way. That 89% resist is a situation of ridiculous inf expenditure and effort for a small improvement. I have the PvP +resist IO slotted and Cardiac Alpha (end reduction and resistance) at Tier 4.

There's definitely a middle ground here, though. At this point, he's less fun than some of my other tanks since everything is too easy. Still, when I want to show off, or tank a Master run, he's available.

Hence why I said IMO....its 2011....I feared I wouldn't have to post (In my opinion) on something that isn't clearly stated as fact. The OP asked a question this is MY take on it. Either an IO'ed tank is doing it for the psy defense and extra amount of health aswell as some proc, but are they drastically needed?....to me, no. Are they worth the amount of money....to me, no.

One stone tank, 2 stone brutes, all have at least 95% run boost from IO and 65% recharge boost from IO, and at the defense soft cap as well, all well worth it.

Alpha is Cardiac to improve stamina usage and also Cardiac bolsters resists so less slots for armor resistance and those slots go to attacks and defense slotting.
