Marvel planning to make Guardians of the Galaxy

The Guardians are going to be in season 2 of the Avengers, as well.

Which version, though? I know the cartoon is going to have the recent incarnation with Star Lord and Rocket Racoon. The movie could go with that as well, or they could go back to the classic comics lineup set in the future.

I wonder if even Starhawk knows which version they will do

Rocket Raccoon as an animated figure or drawn in a comic... ok.

As a live action CG character? Possible Jar-Jar.

Right now this is a 'wait and see' for me.

Even worse: possible Howard the Duck.

I'm guessing Rocket won't make the cut. That would be too bad, since I liked him as a kid. Enough so to make an homage character here in CoH, a Claws Scrapper named Razor Raccoon.

Even if the movie is amazing, is there really the fan base to make this a profitable movie?

Won't need the fan base if it's done correctly and seriously. Treated like a Star Wars or Serenity rather than a super hero genre it could do well as generic space opera. Which after all is what the original comic was.

Don't count your weasels before they pop dink!

I could this seeing being really good like a Serenity style plot with a small rag tag bunch of freedom fighters.

I'm in wait and see mode on this. More Groot and Rocket Raccoon is fine with me!

"And for us this is the end of all stories, and we can mostly say they lived happily ever after. But for them it was the beginning of the real story. All there life in this world and all there adventures in Narnia had only be the cover and the title page: now at last they were beginning Chapter One of The Great Story which no one on earth has ever read: which goes on forever: in which every chapter is better than the one before" - C.S Lewis, The Last Battle.

If they actually pull it off, I wouldn't be opposed to seeing a Starjammers movie as well. Or maybe the Silver Surfer movie will finally see the light of day.

Ok. If they can make this, they can make a good Daredevil movie.

The article is pretty vague about details. Notice the description of the group, they mention the reboot, but refer to the original, where the new version doesn't use the same set-up device.

Seems to me, that the article was written by somebody that used the first paragraph or so of the wikipedia entry as a description of the group.

Whereas, this interview from a year ago: http://splashpage.mtv.com/2010/08/06...of-the-galaxy/

He specifically mentions the recent revamp.

if it's a good flick and they dont spend stupid amounts of money to make it, does it NEED a good fan base already in order to make it profitable?

I... have never heard of this IP before this post. I think I have some Wiki-ing to do.

I imagine that Marvel studios would want to somehow connect this flick to their other movies. Seems to me that having Vance Astro with Captain America's shield would be a no-brianer.

Serenity had a budget of $39 million. It made $25 million in the US and just under $39 million worldwide. This considering it was based off of a TV show with a rather passionate fan base versus a lesser known comic book. People can complain about Superman Returns all they want. It still made just under $400 million worldwide in vast part due to the IP alone. Batman and Robin? $238 million worldwide and that's based on 1997 prices without the easy money of IMAX and 3D. Can a lesser known comic book break through? Hellboy proved one can. The problem is Hellboy came out in 2004 well before comic book movie saturation was kicking in. Green Lantern would of, could of, should of been a huge blockbuster movie and yet it still currently stands at needing $40 million to break even. Anything less than a really good movie and it's going to bomb and even being really great doesn't mean it will succeed, see Iron Giant.

And I rest my case.

I'd say that Marvel needs to take some risks on this one.

Find some up and coming actors, and bring them in. Then, go to one of the smaller name FX groups and say "Here's your budget, here's the script. Show us what you can do."

If it bombs, it bombs, but they've kept their losses down. If it takes off, they have a winner and a possible franchise for future movies.
