I need a slump buster, and I'm stumped
If you like single target ranged damage with mez protection, Fire/traps Corr.
If you like AOE damage with mez protection, Fire/Traps Corr.
If you want to be able to be a force multiplier for a team, because the same techniques work solo, Fire/Traps Corr.
If you want to play in close to the mobs, Fire/Traps Corr.
If you are interested in possibly being iSoftcapped to sm/l and energy, Fire/Traps Corr.
If you want to solo AV's and some GM's, Fire/Traps Corr.
Also, In before Dechs drops the MFing 'Shade bomb.
Well, aside from "It may be burnout, take a week or two and just ignore the game," you may not need a *character* but a *purpose.* Setting up a special "team" with your friends to run once or twice a week, picking a theme for it and the like might help break out of the rut, as well.
That said, what do you enjoy doing? Flip side being which characters can you not stand playing, and why? (Answering those got me liking masterminds after fighting boredom and "feeling like a spectator" with a bots/ff. I wanted to be involved and 'busy,' so I rolled a Thugs/Poison - big change.)
I've always seemed to tend towards melee type characters, which is why 4 out of my 5 50's are melee and even my Kin defender is a mix it up, be in the middle of the action type of character. MM's have never really appealed to me because of the whole "spectator" aspect of them, but maybe I need to do something different.
In the end, I really a character that can solo well, while at the same time play a roll on a team.
But really, the most fun I've ever had playing this game was learning how to play my Warshade.
I had so much fun with it that I wrote a pretty definitive guide on how to play a Tri-Form Warshade. See the link in my signature for The MFing Warshade.
Where to now?

+1 on the burnout aspect. Sometimes you just need to recharge the batteries. MMs do have different play styles. For me, MMs can wear on me due to the luggage aspect. Nothing bugs me more than setting up on my Bots/traps, faceplanting, and then having to go back and go through the setup process all over again.
Currently, doing Hardcore is the best way for me to play the game. It's like speed dating in that you have no expectations and if it doesn't work out, you roll something different. If you end up liking it, you can just server transfer it if need be. Since VIPs will be able to a do a transfer per month, this will be easy to do. About the only other thing I do is work on self PLing some brute builds up just because it's a different play style than normal gaming and it's something new for me to try out. You might want to look at some aspect of the game you haven't done and see about making a character just for that.
Whatever you do, don't build another melee toon. If you ignore that advice, then don't make another Fire Melee or Shield Defense build, because you've already covered those bases twice in just four characters. Duplication is boring enough, but when I think of three of the same set I can't stop yawning.
My first recommendation would be a Corruptor, with Fire Primary and your choice of Dark, Cold or Traps for the Secondary (you already have a Rad). You'll be able to solo easily at any level and contribute very nicely to any team. I'd probably choose Dark, but that's likely because I already have Cold & Traps.
After that, I'd probably recommend an Earth/Fire Dominator. Controls and Domination will help against mezzers and the damage will definitely impress. I'm terribly jealous of my wife's Earth/Fire and it's not even specced for PVE. You'll be able to solo and team equally well.
My dark horse recommendation would be a Fire/Fire Blaster. Blasters don't bring anything to the table outside of damage, but they bring a lot of damage. Fire/Fire brings a lot of AOE damage both at range and up-close, which would match your playstyle. Soloing will be notably more difficult than with a Corruptor, but the option will still be there, especially with IO sets involved. You'll melt x8 mobs in seconds and have a full AOE attack chain. I absolutely love mine, though I admit it is more of a team-oriented character.

That is why I recommend a traps toon. Traps playstyle is in the face(well, at the toes technically) of the mobs. It works best if you are the first one in the spawn debuffing the crap out of it. Sure, you could set up your traps, and then pull the mob/spawn to you, but why? Good luck playing that way on a team.
The best part for me? Mez protection in FFG. That small little coverage of mez was enough for me to get past the "but I only like melee" excuse.
Fire allowed me to satisfy my whorish need for aoe numbers.
Dechs, I am begining to think you have actually composed a few form letters in order to streamline marketing the MFing Warshade..
[I've already played] 50 fire/shield tank, Ill/rad troller, kin/wp scrap, Elec/Shield brute, Kin/elec def, and a 50 fire/fire tank.
I'm thinking about maybe a dom or defender, but I'm open to any suggestions. |
For a dom, almost anything you choose is going to be new because Ill isn't on them yet. I would strongly encourage you to check out

since it is still pretty accurate and amazingly comprehensive.
For a defender, you can try a traps character as has been suggested in this thread. Another thing you might try is storm, which has a lot of fun, cool effects that are dramatic and interesting. For secondary, /sonic is really good for defenders because of the extra -res (-20%, compared to a corruptors -15%) in the blasts.
Best of luck!
"Hi, my name is Ail. I make people sick."
A partial selection from my 50's on Freedom: Ail = Ice/Traps, Luck = Street Justice/Super Reflexes Stalker, Mist = Bane, Pixy = Trick Arrow/Archery, Pure = Gravity/Energy, Smoke = Fire/Fire Dominator
Gravity/Sonic controller. Embrace your inner gimp. Judging by your list of characters he must be lonely.
If it weren't for Warshades, I probably would not have ended up sticking with COH.

I've decided to try my hand at a WS. I'm finding that in the current state of the game, playing an AT that gets stronger when you team to be a bit lacking since there are so few teams at the low levels.
At least get them to 10 and start running TFs.
What? I'm not sure exactly what your "he must be lonely" statement means.

There's always the Pocket D Wormhole to Praetoria- If you're on a fairly populated server, you shouldn't have any trouble finding a low level team there.

I know you already decided, but if the Shade turns out not to be your thing, here's my 2 Inf:
Dark Armor. I'm surprised Dechs didn't mention it. Because it's mostly resists and a heal in the low levels, it works best with high HP, so tanks and brutes. The damage aura works wonderfully with fury, so I prefer brutes. Pairing it with Dark Melee gives you a bunch of -tohit to layer your mitigation, and Dark Consumption to refill your End after Dark regen flatlines you (less relevant once you're well slotted, but a lifesaver in earlier levels). And don't worry about the Mez Auras messing with your fury - with new fury, they only slow you down a bit - you'll never notice it.
(Fire or Archery)/Devices blaster. Add Super Speed or a Stealth IO and you can stealth past anything (remember to use Smoke Grenade on high perception and anti-stealth foes). Yay ranged Stalker! Devices has no Build Up, so I recommend NOT pairing it with a set that doesn't have Aim, but that's just my preference.
Plant/Earth dominator. Seeds to confuse everything, Immobilize them when they get close together, then let the enemies and Carrion Creepers do most of the work. With a hold in both the primary and secondary, you can mez a boss even without domination, and the hammers and Seismic Smash will make short work of them. And it gets Power Boost too!
@Roderick
Play a Dominator !
Melee, Ranged AND Control.
One of my most enjoyable (not necessarily powerful) combination has been Mind/Energy.
Confusion, Knockback, Holds, Knockback = Happy Melee Fun
BIOSPARK :: DARKTHORN :: SKYGUARD :: WILDMAGE
HEATSINK :: FASTHAND :: POWERCELL :: RUNESTAFF
I 2nd 3rd and 4th to the Dom. I play mostly melee toons, too. But i made a Plant/Fire Dom. Plant is so pretty in itself, not to mention having confuse, holds, immobs to play with. And /Fire allows some AoE, Ranged and Melee to go with it. I may make another Dom. A Fire/Thorns or something.
As far as Blaster, i only have 1 that i like. It's an Archery/Fire. RoA, Burn, FSC and it's a wrap.
I'm gonna add something different: play a Fortunata.
Not the strongest toon while leveling, but it has melee, it has range, it has control, it has team buffs, and once you hit 50 it really does become quite powerful once you make Mind Link perma.
I can't compare it with a well outfitted Brute, for example, but my Fort is easily the most powerful toon I have right now.

If you want to play in close to the mobs, Fire/Traps Corr. If you are interested in being fully positionally soft capped, Fire/Traps Corr. If you want to solo AV's and some GM's, Fire/Traps Corr. Honestly though any Traps toons will allow you to be capped. Defender though has some nicer numbers with Traps.
Trick Arrow Archer Defender also. Just leveled to 50 one of those ranged capped hover blaster style.. soloing 4/8 mobs with it. Once incarnated Oil Slick will be down to a 48 second recharge. Oil Slick states it last 30 seconds.

Fire/dark corruptor or a warshade should work
Thanks for the further advice. I currently play on Liberty, but it really feels like the population is dying so I'll give one of the more populated servers a shot.
make a brute. Smashing from group to group is very fun.
I've found myself in a really bad slump recently. I have a bunch of toons, and none seem to grab my attention. I've got a 50 fire/shield tank, Ill/rad troller, kin/wp scrap, Elec/Shield brute, Kin/elec def, and a 50 fire/fire tank. I have a handful of other 30+ toons, but lately, I'm just struggling to find something that I find fun.
I know nobody can tell someone else what if "fun" to play. Fun is an individual thing. I'm sure I'm not the only one that has experienced this problem and all I'm looking for are some AT ideas that were fun for you to play. I'm thinking about maybe a dom or defender, but I'm open to any suggestions.
Thanks in advance.
