I need a slump buster, and I'm stumped
I'm going to recommend going with the Dom. I have a level 20 dom that I play when I want a change of pace, and while it's not fast leveling, psy/nrg dom is probably the most amazing 'comic book' feel I've gotten in the game. Tossing mobs in the air, putting another to sleep, confusing a third to attack the first one, holding another in place so he can't do anything, and then once they're all under wraps blasting them back and forth across the room while hovering stealthed in the air. I could only be happier if I had some sort of mid-air force choke hold besides the difficult to use telekinesis.
I've found myself in a really bad slump recently. I have a bunch of toons, and none seem to grab my attention. I've got a 50 fire/shield tank, Ill/rad troller, kin/wp scrap, Elec/Shield brute, Kin/elec def, and a 50 fire/fire tank. I have a handful of other 30+ toons, but lately, I'm just struggling to find something that I find fun.
I know nobody can tell someone else what if "fun" to play. Fun is an individual thing. I'm sure I'm not the only one that has experienced this problem and all I'm looking for are some AT ideas that were fun for you to play. I'm thinking about maybe a dom or defender, but I'm open to any suggestions. Thanks in advance. |
You are likely bored because there is almost no risk to your characters.
Truth: you probably CAN'T die with mez protection, incredible control with damage-multiplying powers, and capped-to-multiple-types-or-positions shields.
Blasters have none of that. Yeah, with millions in Inf you can maybe cap one position or one damage type of Defense, but other than that, you are on your own. You will learn which opponents do what type of damage, which ones have strong Mez powers, and the best tactics for taking on tough situations. You will really appreciate team members that buff you instead of going "Hey my Def went from capped to super capped".
Here's the challenge: Blasters take on exactly the same enemies every other AT does, but with none of the protections (I'm trying real hard not to call them crutches) the others have. You want something that will keep you interested? Give a high-level Blaster a go.
Ideally, the tank will die precisely as everyone else starts fighting, allowing aggro to be spread evenly among the blaster. -seebs, "How to Suck at CoH/CoV" Guide
Thanks Stealth, I did exactly what you suggested here and made a blaster. I agree with you that most of my characters are pretty safe (something I never really considered before), I would argue that the Kin defender is far from safe.
I decided that just making a blaster wasn't enough, I also moved servers, and took nothing with me. Starting from scratch, not the rich child of one of my 50's. So far, its worked. I look forward to playing my toon again. Meeting new people, leveling up an AT that is totally foreign to me, and actually grouping again has changed the game for me.
If you realy want some hair raising fun, try out an archery/fire blaster. You get some great PBAOE attacks from your secondary that put you right in the middle of the fight with little to no protection. Mine is my favorite toon to play when I need a change of pace. The aoe capability is incredible, especially in the higher levels. Once you get rain of arrows, set your diff to x8 and don't look back.
I get to feeling the same way sometimes My suggestion for The Slump is not for you to find a new powerset or new toon to level, it's to find a New Project. I got into a slump the first time after I'd figured out how to play a few different AT's (I'd never played so much as a computer game before hubby cruelly FORCED me to play this game. much less an MMO. ). So, it was time for a Real Project!
I think my first idea was to become a badge hunter. Think I got over 300, flying back and forth over blacked out map zones, went to odd places where I could find lots of some odd villain group to mindlessly mash, and finally did a posi or something, which, being lvl 50 at the time, was the last straw for me in terms of pointless tedium. So, ok, Maybe I wasn't cut out to be a badge hunter?
Time for a Next Project! I had heard of people who had no money problems, though I never knew any personally, nor did anyone I knew, so decided to see if I could become filthy rich. Not because I thought riches were all that important, but just to see if I could figure it out (This was a few years back, before there were guilds on marketing, and such.). Thought "huh, time to start fa..." and that's as far as I got even in my head, since I find farming even more tedious than posi's. So, attempted to see if I could figure it out just buying and selling stuff.
That one worked. I did figure it out, and was very proud of myself, and like less of an MMO doof. If I could puzzle THAT out, why I might be able to figure out other stuff, too, who knows? But you can't market forever - eventually all your toons have all the expensive stuff (being completely unaware that this did not necessarily make them GOOD toons, or course), and the base gets full, and I was risking alienating everyone I knew by always asking if they needed money.
After levelling up a few more toons, I found myself in another slump, so time for a New Project. Time to try some new AT's that I hadn't been able to do well before, with the goal of figuring out how to not suck at them. That was fun, but now I had a new problem, necessitating a New Project.
By this time I had dozens of 50's, had to move some out of Virtue (only 36 slots? EVER? Are you KIDDING ME?!), and decided that I needed to bite the bullet and delete (or move) some of these toons I never played. But before I could justify that, I needed to see if they were worth salvaging. This ended up being a huge project (and if you don't think soloing a dark defender all the way to Grandville and back for some armor isn't a really, really, slow process, well, I don't know what to tell you!). This was probably the most rewarding project of all, because it taught me how to make good, solid builds, rather than just throw purple stuff at them and call 'em done.
Latest Project is (probably obviously) getting incarnate stuff for them. This is more daunting because I will go a month without ever wanting to see another trial ever again, but I am sure I'll get there eventually. I only have a few more to get the 4th tier alpha, then trials in earnest. (What? You heard me groan all the way where YOU ARE?!)
Anyway, hope this wasn't too rambling and dull. My intent was to toss out some of the things that worked for me, in hopes that it might spark an idea or two for you, too. Good luck, I am sure you will find what you need, if you take a good look around and see what piques your interest. Happy hunting!

Roll a Dark Miasma defender, any secondary of your choice. Mess around Atlas Park or Galaxy City until you get Twilight Grasp, Tar Patch, and Darkest Night. Then crank your mission difficulty to +1, invite a medium sized PuG (preferably blasters), and get ready to godmode through low level Kings Row/Hollows missions like you've never seen before.
Will Darkest Night stop being adequate protection after a while? Well, perhaps. But by then, you have Fearsome Stare supplying your godmode, so it's a moot point.

Any other suggestions? I've been in a slump as well, and seeing all the goodies in i21 & having to wait for them made me want to do more with my game time then kind just stare at the chat screen. My main 3 are a Fire/Cold Cor SS/Shield Brute and an MA/Nin Stalker. I thought about giving a Thugs/Trap a try but I can't get the play style at at.

(Almost said Blaster for you too, but you already did Fire/Cold Corr, which is somewhat similar.)

I vote for a Trick Arrow defender. I got stuck in a melee rut until I made my TA/Rad def. I enjoyed playing it for a week or so until I got more scrapper ideas. Soloing can be a pain, though, but you learn how to manage.
I have this problem also and the best thing for novelty is oddly Assault Rifle. It's not peak damage or nukes, but it is action-packed. You are the master of cone damage and knockback and can dish it out non-stop. Very good team support. I have a few AR Blasters and AR/NRG at 50 now, where Boost Range adds alot to your cone's reach.
At the moment though I am really enjoying an AR/Rad Corrupter. I can keep mobs bouncing off the walls and healing while they get back up. Recharge is extreme with AM and Hasten and a nice Damage Buff to boot. Rad has a few tricks too when needed.

Each AT in the game has a role to play melee AT do melee, range toons do range, debuffing/buffing toons do debuffing/buffing. I know APP/PPP can give an AT them a power that is not common to the role they are, but Epic AT's can play as a melee, range, debuffing, and even a buffer. I say play an epic archetype.
My Peacebringer has 3 builds:
Build 1: Human team build w/ AoE and Cones and Ally Heal
Build 2: Triform team/solo build for team playing
Build 3: Human build solo buildfor small spawn w/ Single target melee and range attacks only
Warshade:
Build 1: Triform team build
Build 2: Human team/solo build for huge spawns
Build 3: None
Arachnos Soldier:
Build 1: Bane build w/ Mace only range and melee attacks
Build 2: Bane Huntsman Buld w/ assault rifle only attacks
Build 3: Crab build w/ range and Pets
Arachnos Widow
Build 1: Fortunata build w/ AoE range and buff/debuff (darkest night)
Build 2: Night Widow w/ melee only build
Build 3: Fortunata build w/ Single Target solo build
Every Epic AT can be played different ways and you do not have to be stuck with one playstyle all the way to 50.
I know other AT's can be played different ways such as a blapper or scranker, etc... but it just seems the epic AT's just has more options.

Make a storm summoning character. I recommend energy/storm corruptor as a super fun choice ... All knockback, all the time. Wind, rain, thunder, crazy energy going all over the place .... Yeah.
