For the primary, Fire or Plant. They both offer adequate control and adequate damage, which I think is lots better than superb control and poor damage.
For the secondary, kin or any of the powerhouse debuff sets (rad, cold, storm etc.)
Ok so...my altitus is playing up again, or moreso...im trying to find just a real fun toon to play through all the way to 50...and then really enjoy the incarnates with it. I thought i'd put this in the Controller forums because im looking for inspiration or experience other players have had that was really enjoyable or STILL is enjoyable to them.
The only catch though...it can't be a melee based toon...so scrapper, tanker, stalker, brute and Epic AT's are all out. I'm looking for a ranged/control toon...that not only feels powerful...but IS powerful, specially at end game...also...team friendly because i love to team...but also able to solo farm...not brute or kin fast...but well... from what ive been reading though as a side note...the plant/kin troller and plant/fire dom are a blast to play...i just dont know why yet:P so please...any personal experience or input welcome Fox |
Plant/Kin is a great character. Great damage buffs, heal and endurance. It is awesome as part of a duo with a melee character who can gather groups into a tight bunch. (I have one at 50.)
Fire is a good control set, but to make best use if it, you have to go into melee. Since you want to stay out of melee, then Fire, Ice and Elec are probably not the best sets.
Another option is Illusion/Rad, Illusion/Storm, Ill/Cold or Ill/TA. Each of these sets play differently -- I have one of each at 50. However, Illusion is not ideal for farming, as it is more single target focused. Take a look at my long Illusion/Rad guide if you go with any of the Illusion options.
Many dominators can also be played at range. I'm working on a Mind/Energy now. Earth/Fire or Plant/Fire would work well. Doms have melee attacks but you don't really have to use them if you want to stay at range.
Another great character might be a Fire/Dark Corrupter.

but sorry...just had to clarify:P
Of the ones you mentioned though, Plant/Kin has always interested me...seems a little bit more work since no damage aura...but has the added safety of SoC...Plant definitely a contender here. Plant/Fire anyone?
Fire/? Corruptor also sounds good too...i actually made a Fire/Dark a little while back...got to about 27 and then...just deleted him to make room for another idea i had:P might make him again and see what happens. Either that or Fire/Cold or Kin?
keep them coming guys...any great experience/love with a particular toon?

Plant/Cold/Stone is the most fun I've had in this game, on any character. Plant/Cold/Ice would be just as good, but ranged instead of melee.
Plant/Storm might be even more fun, I think, if somewhat less effective against AVs. There are definitely times I look at Lightning Storm and get jealous, but perma-Heat Loss is probably worth it.
Definitely can't go wrong with either combo, though. Honestly, I'm not too sure you can go that wrong with plant/anything -- my friend used to positively adore his Plant/Emp.
Almost any Dominator should give you something like this, depending on your definition of "farm." Even a pretty average late game Dominator... dominates.
More so with IOs and incarnate abilities.
Well, speaking for myself, I'm thoroughly addicted to my Plant/Stormie; he's got a deep toolkit for dealing with just about anything. The only enemies that give him any real pause are the ones where most of the faction is confuse-resistant (I'm looking at you, Nemesis -_-; ), and even there, he can handle it- I just have to adjust my playstyle slightly.
As for 'powerful'... I recently discovered that even playing permanently on x8/+0, I was getting lazy and sloppy with my playstyle, since I was just running rampant over everything >.O
The discovery came when I ran a friend's mission arc to test it, forgot and left things on x8, and got completely mauled by the custom mobs. Tightened my playstyle, worked a bit smarter, and proceeded to run rampant over the lot of them. Still on x8. *evilgrin*
So yeah, decent power behind it.

Plant/Storm troller.
Fire/Storm Corr
Dark/Traps Corr (my project atm)
Ice/Rad troller (not alot of damage, but your teams will love you)
Plant/Storm is as fun as a barrel of drunken monkies with power tools.
I rolled one with the intention of making him a hippy character who was chosen as an avatar of nature, Plant/Storm/Stone power fitting rather well for that. I wasn't expecting him to rock SO HARD. He was my first incarnate, my first troller to 50, and the first toon I ever bothered to IO out.
Seeds of confusion is wonderful, though I don't find myself using it as much as some other people. I like to drop carrion creepers, slap down roots and vines, then summon tornado and lightning storm on top of the mob. Most of the time they're dead before I can finish summoning the lightning storm, but for the tougher mobs, you can also drop freezing rain on top of them. All that plus my flytrap going to town on them tends to be ridiculously powerful. And if they're still alive with all that going I can unleash seismic smash and fissure on them for some ridiculous damage.
The only think I really have to hold back on teams is tornado. Everything else tends to just make things die faster.
Plant/Storm - For that somewhat easier ride up to 50th lvl. Great team support, but also can solo AVs.
Fire/Storm - a little harder to play, has tons of endurance problems but with a little work and some cash... is a awesome toon to play. It's my go-to toon when someone needs help on a task force or trial. Can even farm pretty good, when you're bored or looking to find some purples drops.
If it was my choice... as much as I love my Fire/Storm, I would have to go with a Plant/Storm just because they're so damn useful.

I think Illusion/storm and Plant/storm are great fun.
All the storm combos are pretty good actually.

fire/storm and plant/storm sound great though! i cant seem to pull away from the idea of a plant/kin or plant/fire dom though...XD help.

Elec doesn't get as much solo benefit from Kinetics I think, just because it doesn't have a whole lot of damage to start with. But it does have two fast recharging AoE clicks and some good endurance recovery abilities. This lead me to make an Elec/Rad (for the resistance debuff, in part) and put procs in those two attacks. It's not quite as fast as my Fire/Kin was at that level, but it's probably safer, and once I get the other three procs it should be quite something. But since two of those are PvP IOs and one's a purple, that'll be a while yet.
As for teaming... that's trickier. Some of Elec's tricks take some lead time to start working, and that's hard to get on larger teams.
I'm back with another idea! :P

Psi, Earth, Ice, Elec and NRG are all decent matches with Elec. NRG does knockback but it's so single target focused you can sleep an entire spawn and then mez, clobber & kb foes to death one by one, the fact your target is no longer in your Sleep patches and -End PBAOE doesn't actually matter too much (cos he's on his back and/or mezzed and soon to be dead thanks to the excellent damage NRG does).
Plant/Storm controller and Plant/Fire controller will both be monsters.
If you're actually willing to give it a shot, roll a stormie.

I would advise moving a Elec/ troller somewhere down on the list of trollers to play. I created one after waiting a few weeks when they first came out. It was fun playing my elec/rad troller in Gold till I hit my teens, then it got to be a pain due to the low damage. Got fun again in the 30s, but still can drain myself dry of endurance if I'm not watching. You be surprised how easy it is even after draining all the mobs around you.
Now doing mostly ITFs, since I'm in my 40s.... and while I can see the results of me being on the task force team (like my /rad toggles), it doesn't give me the same thrill my ice/kin or fire/storm do. No 'I'm the King of the World' moments with playing my elec/rad, yet I'm sure my teammates do appreciate me being there.

For my money, the most fun you can have on a controller (and it tends to be powerful), is with a splattroller. In a nutshell: take Fire/ (make sure to take fire cages, hotfeet, flashfire) or Plant/ (roots, seeds of confusion, carrion creepers) and combine with /Storm (make sure to take Freezing rain), /Rad (Am, EF, IR, Mutate, Fallout, Vengeance), /Kin (SB, ID, Siphon Speed, Transfusion, Transferrence, Fulcrum shift). (Possibly /Cold too [sleet, heat loss, AFAIK].)
It's the brinksmanship that makes them fun, and the real AoE damage that makes them powerful. That's been the majority of my CoX gaming across the last several trips to 50, and my fatigue with the style is very low.
I imagine electric might be doable this way. It doesn't look like fire or plant on paper, but it's novel?

I'll add my vote to Plant/Storm... Mine's sitting at lvl 46 right now so I haven't tried her in incarnate stuff. She's a blast to play, rips through everything. Ya, Nemesis can be annoying, but take the AoE hold for those pesky ba.. *cough* If only other alts would stop distracting me I could finally...
OH! SHINEY!
I have to second Amy's suggestion, Fire/Storm or Plant/Storm sound like what you're looking for.
