Trailer for John Carter

Mind you I read the books waaaaay back when. But I vaguely remember digging them. This made me geek out big time.

I really do need to read 'em at some point. I liked how some of Heinlein's stuff was pretty much an homage to ERB's Mars stuff.

That looks very interesting. I'll have to check it out.

They ALL float down here. When you're down here with us, you'll float too!

I was just telling my boss today about John Carter of Mars. Nice to see I can show him a trailer tomorrow.

Okay, THIS, is officially awesome!

I couldn't agree more.

I'm anxious and excited at the same time, I hope they do the John Carter series justice.

If it does well maybe someone (NOT Uwe Boll!!!) will do a Dray Prescot movie too. I can hope.

That looks as if it might have potential. Certainly, I recognized a lot of things from the books. I can pretty much guarantee, though, that it won't have the books' level of gore and nudity, which out-Conans Conan.

At this point, I'm at least willing to wait and see.

When I was a kid I read every Edgar Rice Burroughs novel I could get my hands on and was well familiar with -

  • Tarzan's Africa, full to bursting with lost civilizations, with Pal-ul-don being my favorite (I have two characters based on the Waz-don people) -
  • Pellucidar, home of David Innes and Dian the Beautiful, where time is relative in a big way and even the Lord of the Jungle can get lost -
  • Amtor, with 'Wrong Way' Carson Napier and Duare flying around Venus in the anotar. Woops, where'd the prop go? -
  • Barsoom - home of John Carter, Dejah Thoris, Tars Tarkas, Ullyses S. Paxton, Thuvia, Carthoris, and many more -
  • Caprona - a place where, as Bowen Tyler and Lys La Rue discover, evolution isn't just a theory, but a way of life -

See also Burroughs' less well known works, like The Mucker, The Mad King, The Moon Maid, The Lost Continent, Apache Devil, The Monster Men -

Alas! No one yet, in my estimation, has made a movie that didn't stray far too far from the source material. Especially all the silly Tarzan movies...

I'm hoping this one will be the exception, that the people making the movie won't just use Burroughs' character and place names in a story of their own creation. There are ELEVEN Barsoom books. Surely out of all that material, the movie guys won't feel the need to write a whole new story, or leave out vast quantities of Burroughs-created material while simultaneously adding in their own... stuff.

Another thing I wonder about: the first three novels - A Princess of Mars, The Gods of Mars, and The Warlord of Mars - are a trilogy. Will this movie be an adaption of the first novel, complete with the cliffhanger ending, or will the movie guys try to condense all three novels into one film? Or, as I fear, dispense with the novels altogether and do their own... thing.

I have read most of the books since they are free for most ereaders.

All I can say is I hope it is better than the made for TV Princess of Mars with Traci Lords.

I'm familiar with the novels this movie is based on. But just from the point of view of summarizing the trailers it looks like this movie might be a cool mix of Dune, Conan and the non-silly aspects of the Star Wars prequel trilogy with perhaps a dash of Avatar thrown in. It certainly -looks- good at any rate. Hopefully the story will also be adapted well enough to make this a winner.

I've been meaning to read the books this is based on. But I decided I would wait until after the movie was out. That way I won't be disappointed if it strays from the books. I figured if I read the books after, then I get the best of both. For those interested, Amazon has at least the first couple books for free via kindle ebooks, though there are some collections people are selling for dollar or two.

In that second trailer, believe I saw... Woola. For some reason that produced the following effect:
