Sick of Super 8

After seeing the movie I think the promotions of Super 8 are kind off the mark. I thought this movie was going to be a monster movie in line with Cloverfield, but surprisingly it wasn't...it was better. The movie felt like a Love Letter to 80's kid adventure films like Monster Squad and Goonies. I wish I knew, I would have taken my nieces to it but unfortunately the advertising for the film weren't promoted to convey it.

I really hate that guy's work, apparently.
When you say the films of your youth I hope you mean movies other than Star Trek, because there has only been 1 decent Star Trek movie ever made and that was "The Wrath of Khan" Every other Star Trek movie before and after belongs in the same steaming pile of excrement as "Highlander 2".

I disagree, only the odd numbered ones belong in that pile. 2, 4, 6, 8 and even 10 (J.J. Abrams Star trek) were all great Star Trek movies.

10 was actually Nemesis, Abrams' was 11. I agree, but I wouldn't say 3, 7 or 9 belong in the excrement pile. None of the TNG films were that bad. At any rate, I can find enjoyment in any of the Star Trek films. The Undiscovered Country and First Contact are my personal favorites. Wrath of Khan is very good but I believe those two are the superior films.

To say nothing of the fact that the stupid preview is on my Iron Man 2 DVD and even an "in game" preview came with Portal 2, where I can play a 2 minute mini game of the teaser trailer...

Sometimes I wonder if studio execs get a finished movie, realize it's crud and just toss millions into advertising hoping to recoup their investment in the first week or two before word gets around the the movie is horrible.

It'd been a long time since I've gotten this fed up with movie ads, but I'm so ready for this movie to come out so I can never see another trailer for it.

And no I won't watch it, I never thought it looked good and after seeing so many commercials for it, I'm already sick of it.
While I totally agree with your overall sentiment, I have not shared your experience at all in terms of this movie. I have seen almost NO advertising for it at all outside of trailers in front of other movies I have seen, and an occasional TV promo. I guess we must just watch totally different things that I haven't gotten inundated.

I don't remember what movie it was, but it was one that I was actively excited about going to see like a year ago. And I got so annoyed by the over-saturation of advertisting that I assumed (like another poster above) that the movie must be crap. I almost didn't see the thing based on how annoyed I was. But, I saw it anyway and enjoyed it.

In the present case, I REALLY liked Super 8. To me, it was Goonies for a new age. It was also about the characters in the film, more than it was some generic monster movie. Some bits were quite predictable, and there were a few issues I had with the number of unrealistic explosions... but all in all, I really like it. Probably one of the best movies I have seen this year. Also, the monster is shown a good deal toward the last third of the movie... but it is given a LOT of lead up and anticipation for what this thing is gonna be throughout the first 2/3.

Yes, but given the previews, the only thing that crosses my mind is the variety of film by the same name. On that note, I also really liked the 'movie' that Super 8's antagonists created that runs during the credits. Hilarious! It reminded me in so many ways of the ultra-bad no-budget videos my friends used to make in High School.

Gotta agree there. But then again, I love the Borg as a villain, and they featured in a few of those.

Exactly. Original Star Wars, the first (and only good) version of CE3K, ST: WoK is the only good one.

I realize The Goonies is a touchstone for a certain generation, but I was too old for it. I tried twice but couldn't watch it. I'm not the target audience.

For certain personal and professional reasons, I'm glad you like Undiscovered. The first draft of the script was better, though. None of that stupid Shakespeare junk Bennet added.

A friend of mine pointed out that Picard never left the glowy barber pole in the first TNG flick. Once you accept that, every other incongruous moment in the rest of the movies makes sense, and all the inconsistency goes away (such as the bizarre addition of a Borg Queen) because all of the TNG films are occurring in Picard's imagination inside that Aurora Galactialis. (What the hell was that thing called? Besides "plot device".)

I thought The Voyage Home was horrible. I'd almost rather watch all of the TNG movies and ST5 than watch that damn preachy save-the-whales schlockfest.

I want to say, "We'll leave the Monster on for ya...", but I think that's a riff on the Motel 6 phrase.

I thought it was okay, but kinda forgettable. I liked that it was lacking in any major stars. I think it was well made, I just think that it was missing something to make it a great movie. I would give it like an 83ish score.

Jay Doherty: Yes, there was this one night that I was ready to go home but had to drop the browns off at the super bowl before I left for home. While on the throne it hit me. I stayed for a few more hours and that why we have the pain pads in the game.

I don't know if it is true, but a friend of mine told me it was actually 2 movie scripts that Spielberg smooshed together into 1 movie. One being a "Lean On Me" type coming of age flick around the kids making super-8 movies, the other being an alien action thing. I suspect I, and a lot of other folks, are gonna make this one a "wait till video" one due to all the other good flicks out right now, or coming up soon. Too bad too cuz I really liked the Goonies. And Ironik you are only 2 years older than me. Goonies was a great flick at any age! It made all kids "play time" become a real adventure. You just can't beat that.

Super 8 was, no kidding, the best movie I've seen all year.

But I thought X-Men: First Class was crap, so take my opinion with a grain of salt.

Also, Super 8 edged out Rango from the #1 spot, albeit by a wide margin.

... Yeah, my taste in movies sucks, doesn't it?

Wasn't ST5 the Kirk/Spock/Bones bromance one? That's my favorite Star Trek movie, or at least my favorite that features the original cast. >_>;

Unless I'm mistaken, ST5 was the one where they get hijacked by a crazy vulcan and search for God at the center of the universe. I don't recall any bromance.

No offense intended but Ironiks 2 years older than me as well and I agree with his opinion about the Goonies. Nothing wrong with it but I was to old to enjoy it. Maybe if I was 10 years younger when it came out I'd have liked it.

.. pretty much the only scene worth watching in the movie.

Ah, the camping scene. Yes, that is a redeeming scene. And Shatner looks younger there to me than he did in 2-4.

When I had my birthday senior year, my best friend remarked, "You aren't 17 going on 18, you're 17 going on 40." Which was true. I've always felt like I was in my 40s. So by the time I was 20, you can imagine how little tolerance I had for kids' action flicks.

I've always felt like an old man, but I've always enjoyed various "kids" movies, too.

Same.

In my 20's, I went out with more than one woman (also in their 20's) who said, "You know, you seem really old." This was always quickly followed by an embarassed look and something to the effect of, "Um, but not in a bad way."

The only kids movies I can really get into are the ones that also have something for adults, as if the filmmakers have thrown in a couple things for the grown-ups who have to watch these things over and over. I like half of what Pixar does for this very reason, and I think the best Disney animated film ever made is The Emperor's New Groove.

But when I go back and try to rewatch stuff I loved in my youth, like Speed Racer or Yamato, I just can't get into that mindset because there's nothing adult there to hang my interest on. Whereas something like the Adam West Batman series, I loved it just as much when I saw it as an adult, because I finally got the jokes.

/This

That's why the original cartoons like Looney Tunes are timeless. They were made to entertain adults as well as kids, and as we grow up we start appreciating the deeper meaning of the comedy.
