Most fun?
Warshade is the answer.
Almost irrespective of the question, now that I think about it.

I vote for the Widow/Fort. I'm playing mine right now as basically my main on all the Trials, it's a nice, strong flexible combo.
Note that AoE on the Widows aren't huge, but decent. Forts are ok, Widows get nice ST damage. You might consider a Crab if you really want AoE (I hear they're good, although I don't have one at 50 yet).
Change the Fire/cold controller into a corrupter and then go with that.
I vote either the Widow/Fortunata or the Traps/Sonic.
EDIT: matter of fact you are making me think about a traps/sonic too. That sounds pretty fun.

It depends. What do you like doing? What don't you like?
I could give you a "most fun" answer, but since you aren't me, it may not apply.
I like killing enemies and making a difference in battles. I like feeling uber. I like powers that snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. Turning the question around, if you explain your reason for why you find your choice fun, or your reason for rejecting a certain build, I can see whether your reason would apply to me.

1) Dark/Dark Tank, Brute or Scrapper;
Running a scrapper like this, actually. Kind of on and off, but generally fun because (a) I like control, and this has some, and (b) the great heal (and built in END recovery) is one of those "turn around" powers.
2) Traps/Sonic Defender;
Any time I play traps, it's a "Get to trip mine. That's all I want to do." Feels too "slow" for teams at first, until you get used to setting things up for the *next* group.
3) Widow/Fortunata;
Cannot *stand* these. Played a widow. Working on a fort. Can't give specific reasons (besides being an epic tied to a lousy, rushed and exceptionally disappointing storyline,) I just don't enjoy them. Now, if you were looking at Soldier... Crab or Huntsman is fun.
4) Warshade;
Top of the list just for flexibility, corpse-exploding fun.
5) Earth/Emp Controller;
Probably mid pack. I'm a big fan of Earth - lots of control, but not huge on damage. Less so with Empathy, though it's worth doing a double build and skipping "teammate only" powers (in most instances) for the times you solo.
6) Fire/Cold Controller; or
Don't think I've done the combo. Fire's fun, though.
7) Fire/Ice Blaster.
Played one for a while. It's leveling slowly - just hasn't grabbed me. (Plus it's on one of my lesser-visited servers - Champ or Triumph, I think.)
You can make a Widow and make two builds. Night Widow is just pure DPS like a Claw Scrapper without Shockwave (if you hate the knockback). Fortunata is one of the most flexible AT in the game. You can turn her into a mini Blaster with control (all ranged), turn her into a Claw melee with controls or turn her into mostly controls (which is the least popular route). You can't make a "bad" Fortunata that's put it that way. Bored of one build? Change to another!
As for Warshade, I've come to the conclusion that it takes certain taste to like Kheldian. It is very different from other ATs so if that sounds interesting, feel free to try. I do know that quite a few people don't like Kheldian's design. It has more to do with their design than how "good" they are. It can be the most powerful build but Warshade still does not attract me much. (although I like Warshade's design way better than Peacebringer)
You should put Soldier on the list as well. One build for Bane (Superior Stalker) and one build for mini-Tank with pets and aoe damage!
What's left is to normalize all Assassin Strikes and improve Stalker's old sets (Claw, MA and EM)! You don't need to bring back the missing PbAoE attack. You just need to make the existing ones better! For example, make Slice a WIDER and LONGER cone.
Warshade. Leveling up there's always a power just on the horizon that you are looking forward to (dark nova, black dwarf, stygian circle, dark extraction, eclipse, quasar, etc etc etc), and at level 50 you are full-on Death Blossum coolness. IOs and iPowers just put icing on that cake.
1) Dark/Dark Tank, Brute or Scrapper;
My number 1 choice actually would be Dark/dark brute. End can *kind of* be a problem but i find people say its worse than it really is. Now that fitness is at lvl 2 it likely A LOT better.
2) Traps/Sonic Defender;
Would have great debuffs and buffs but the slow and boring animations of traps is, well...boring. But again...great debuffs.
3) Widow/Fortunata;
I used to have a widow and she was tons of fun, after getting to 24 (26?), it’s like a claws stalker that doesn’t suck.
4) Warshade;
Depends, if you don’t have a ton of bodies around you are gonna suck. But i personally like that style, i find they lvl up slowly though. Have to be aware that you don’t have native mez prot. probably number 2 choice.
5) Earth/Emp Controller;
Emp isn’t fun for me. People always want you to heal rather than buff. This combo would end up having really awful dmg too.
6) Fire/Cold Controller
Fire/cold sounds like it might be quite fun. Awful end before you get heat loss though. After that though...damn it would be nice.
7) Fire/Ice Blaster.
Brute levels of dmg but even worse survivability than a stalker, not very fun imo.

To the OP, I think any epic AT has the most potential for end game goodness of the list.
Warshades are such a roller-coaster of fun. As previously mentioned, as you level up, there is always another milestone power to look forward to. Stygian Circle makes a huge difference . . . you can be nearly dead, nearly out of endurance, and you pop StyCir and BOOM, you are at full health, full endurance. This makes for one of the more enjoyable nukes in the game, because you can run in, Mire, hit the nuke, pop a small blue and then StyCir and you are ready to mop up any survivers. I suggest planning to get Super Speed or a Stealth IO by 14-18 -- it makes running in for Mire/Eclipse much easier.
I think that Fire/Ice is a great Blaster combo, especially on teams. Fire just kills stuff fast. Ice gives you some good control/mitigation, especially Shiver and Ice Patch. Another combo you may want to consider is Fire/Mental -- that added cone and the great buff from Drain Psyche make a big difference.
LOCAL MAN! The most famous hero of all. There are more newspaper stories about me than anyone else. "Local Man wins Medal of Honor." "Local Man opens Animal Shelter." "Local Man Charged with..." (Um, forget about that one.)

Fire/cold controllers have a lot of tools. Flashfire is my favorite opener. It's definitely team-oriented. You have decent damage with ice shielded imps. You have 'turnaround' powers in sleet and heat loss. Heat loss and benumb are great for big game. Elegant infrigidate at tier one stacks with the other slows and is effective.

Fire/Ice blaster for me, hands down. Don't forget to take the Fire Epic pool, and then Reactive Interface if you want to get all Incarnated.

The thing with Warshades, IMO (and also what made me delete my own), is that you have to be flexible. You can't get sucked into the stereotype of Archetypes/Powers (Blasters are range, Regen sucks now, etc).
Warshades have so many possible ways to be built, it confuses me why I haven't seen so many. You can go range with control, range with the gall to back up your aggro, melee with control, and so on. And that's only in Human form. If you can balance jumping between Human and another form, you start to see how amazing these beings are. When you can handle the craziness that is a Tri-Form, you become pure death on a seafood-based sack of skin.
On an unbiased view, Warshades are (like nearly every other AT in the game) only as good as the player. To quote whoever said this, if you can't stand the heat (of a seafood restaraunt) then stay out of the kitchen.
All in all, it would be a good idea to try one out to level, I don't know, 26. You get a good idea of what's to come, what you can do, and what you will be able to do.
Seven years of heroism. Seven years of friendships. Seven years of saving the world. Seven years of virtuous selflessness.
You will return, for you are the mighty City of Paragon, the City of Heroes.
Hands down, the absolute most fun I've ever had playing this game was on my warshade. Everything about him, from level 1 forward, was a total blast.
Give the guide in my signature a read. The one for the MFing Warshade. You'll roll one up, I guarantee it.

Gee, you guys make me want to level a Warshade now. I am really not impressed with Peacebringer (human form) and she is stuck at lvl 32 for good. I deleted PB 4 times during each double exp event and eventually decided to level up to 32 to see Photon Seekers. lol
Well, I don't know why Seekers are on such long recharge. Its damage is ok but to get the most damage, you have to sort of use them in the crowd and of course they cause some massive knockbacks. About the only thing PB excels at is massive knockbacks.
What's left is to normalize all Assassin Strikes and improve Stalker's old sets (Claw, MA and EM)! You don't need to bring back the missing PbAoE attack. You just need to make the existing ones better! For example, make Slice a WIDER and LONGER cone.
Fire/Cold Controller sounds like what you want.
Fire will off the AOE immobilize for the BAF, prisoner escape.
Cold Domination is just wickedly good.

I would go for a night widow. Nice mix of ranged and melee options and access to some team buffing that doesn't take over your fighting role.
Warshades are also a lot of fun especially once you get your fluffy pets.
Thanks everyone for all of the great input. A number of the alternatives sound fun, and I look forward to eventually playing a number of these. However, based on the plurality of votes and the uniqueness of experience, for this project I'm going to roll up...a Warshade.

What is the most painful character I've ever attempted to level?
Warshade is the answer.
Almost irrespective of the question, now that I think about it. |
To the OP - nobody can answer that question for you. What's fun for me, is not for other players. What's fun for you can't be answered by us. With the recent server list merge, you now have a minimum of 180 slots. Roll as many as you think would be interesting, and try them all out!
@Roderick
Which of the following alternatives for my next project would be most fun (not only in the leveling, but in playing once reaches level 50 and incarnate)?:
1) Dark/Dark Tank, Brute or Scrapper;
2) Traps/Sonic Defender;
3) Widow/Fortunata;
4) Warshade;
5) Earth/Emp Controller;
6) Fire/Cold Controller; or
7) Fire/Ice Blaster.
I just leveled a fire/rad corrupter, so I probably don't want to do another /rad right away. On my ice/therm troller, I don't mind healing since I can respond to dwinding green bars, but I don't like having to repeatedly apply proactive buffs (with no feedback as to whether they are even making a difference) to each teammate. I have a psi/em blaster with great ST damage, but he is severely lacking in the AOE department.
