Free Server Transfers?

I remember feeling especially aggrieved a couple of xmas' back when we were all given a bunch of free server transfers. I got slammed by some for saying it favoured our American players much more than any from the EU, (and Paragon Studios got slammed in equal measure) the point did reach home - and I hope was at least partly instrumental in driving forward the process which is resulting in the GSA.

Personally I don't think now is a good time for free server transfers. I'm actually pretty sure the discounted cost of transfers is a tad premature but here's why: When GSA finally comes, I don't know where I'm going to go. I've got some friends on Liberty and I want to check out some other servers but where will I finally come to rest? I can't say.

Give it a few months and I'll have a much better idea of where I want to make my "second home" (No chance I'll ever give up Defiant) and given that I'll have plenty of slots to play with to test the waters, any transfers right now could potentially be wasted.

Maybe what would be a very nice gesture would be for Paragon to think about revisiting the free server transfer idea in the autumn or perhaps xmas - once people know where they want to hang out the most and have a feel for all the different server vagaries!

Here's hoping.

As far as I'm concerned, I... hate making alts. I just don't get it. I did it before... it was fun at first, now it's just plain boring. I mean if you like it, good for you, I really hope you'll enjoy the GSA, but for me, without any transfer "offer"... not so much.

I just love playing my 50s. I spent a lot of time to get them where they are (50 levels, Inventions, Incarnate, etc.) and now that I have all that stuff, I just want to use it. Especially now that the devs are (finally) adding content just for that. I haven't rolled a single new toon in almost 2 years I think (yes, I fought altoholism and I won).

So I'd gladly give you my 11 servers, 132 free characters slots, the option to buy 264 more character slots just to have some of my 50s transfered from Vigilance to Freedom. Because if the price stays the same, I really can't afford to pay that much, even to transfer just a couple of toons.

Sorry to disappoint.
Lisa reads the above thoughtfully...I love the wordage used...currently

Anyways, I did buy a server transfer when they were on sale, and speaking as a player who bought at half off, if they were offered for free when NA and EU become one, I would be happy about it.

Yes, we can make new toons, but, with a few free transfers, EU players can bring a few of their 50s to Freedom and Virtue, and the other servers and play the incarnate taskforces with their NA friends that they have made here on the forums, and visa versa.

Just my two cents.

i don't care if they ever really do "free" again for server transfers

BUT!!! what is really needed is a better per transfer cost

because the new 19.95 sale of 10 per instead of 5 for toon slots

makes!!

1 transfer at 9.99$ looks just stupidly over priced

suggestion do a 10 for 10 deal or a full day token of transfers for say 10 to 15 I will do but at 10 per 1 I'll never do it!!!!

They could give away freebies and I'd never know it. I somehow missed the half-price transfer announcement. There have been a number of things lately that haven't been communicated all that well to the community.

It isn't the devs fault you don't read the announcements.

Make alts anyway. Level one on Freedom. See if it's for you before spending the money. (Pinnacle's better, by the way. *cough.*)

The email is a bad example of "communication." I've been signed up for CoH newsletters since forever, and I don't think I've *ever* gotten any of them. Changing, toggling, and otherwise fiddling with the settings makes no difference. Neither did changing to a different address from a totally different provider.

Would be nice if they offered free transfers more often, even if it was for only 1 slot.

Nor is it their fault if I don't get them due to a hyperactive spam filter.

Thanks for the snark, though. It's duly noted and attributed appropriately.

Their email system is pathetic. I get their announcements about half the time (I didn't get this one) and anything flagged as spam goes into a specific folder that I always check before emptying. Either the internet is so unreliable that half of their emails go missing (and my experience at work and with family belies this) or their email system is a sad and pathetic joke.

BTW, when I purchase something from the NCSoft store, I ALWAYS get the emails.

I think for a short time they should do free transfers because of this new option.... It won't kill them to do this for us, $10 dollars per character can get pricey, and you really do not get to see the full affect of how populated a server is by making a brand new toon. With the new trials there are not many people making new toons because many of the people are working on getting their 50s "OOBER".

Im upset... one I didnt even see an email regarding the discounted transfer and the sentence that stated the discount was small and separated from the other announcements. I think that was terrible... I just looked at it today and still BARELY saw it.. I feel ripped off.. and now they offer discounted slots AFTER the transfer ????? Seriously ??? sorry CoH this is really really lame..

I've had a NA account for some time, I played on Freedom with my friends (who are still there), so I already know it's my destination.

I totally understand if they don't want to give free transfers, but the current price is just surreal. I really think they should use the same system as the slots, especially with the new GSA. Paying $20 for 5 transfers would be ok for me. But right now, $50 for 5 toons is just overpriced IMO.

Devs love to remind us how we have "free content" (issues), but when you have to pay $10 just to move a bunch of bytes from one server to another... well... I don't know how to end that sentence, but you get my point.

Oh I'm not saying the email system isn't pathetic. Merely pointing out that the company made 4 attempts to make everyone aware of the sale.

2 threads
1 announcement on the main website
1 email posting

I'm not sure if the sale was mentioned on the game updater. If they did then it's 5 attempts to let us know.

The company can only do so much to make the info available then it's up to us to read it.

I'm sorry, I know I'm brain damaged, but I really don't remember ever talking about "other games".

Because if you want to talk about that, I don't really think I can find a lot of "other games" that charge you $8 for 6 emotes. But as always, that's not the point. The point is $50, $25 or $10 is overpriced for a server transfer. I don't care what it's charged anywhere else.

(Plus, CoH is a reroll game, it means we have a lot more toons that might be "transfered")

You said you felt being charged $10 is too expensive. I have shown you that we have one of the least expensive transfer fees compared to others in the same industry.

And for every thing you find that other games charge less than CoH does I can find something other games charge for that we get for free. But the topic of this thread was free server transfers.

Then you should have no problem rerolling a character on another server because we have more character slots available than we have characters, and leveling is ridiculously easy in this game.

I should have used the past here, because you would have been right if we were before I19, but with all the "Incarnate" stuff coming toward us, I don't think CoH is a rerolling game anymore. Making us play our existing toons is kind of the new goal of the devs.

Nope. Giving you the choice to do more with them is a continuing goal.

Rerolling is still perfectly valid. The lower level content is not going away - and by the addition of Kai and Stutter, still getting increased.

Yes, that still doesn't change the point that is we have plenty of 50s, and we, now more than ever, have reasons to play them. That's why, when an event, such as GSA, is happening, I really think that this would be a fair move by the devs to allow players, that have had 6 years to level many, many toons, to transfer those toons, or at least some of them, to one of the 11 new servers that they so gently offer us.

I don't ask for free. I ask for a gesture. For people, like me, that have quite a few 50s and want to play them, GSA with $10 transfers is like driving a kid in front of Disneyland and saying "Ok, now find $100 and you can enter. Otherwise, you stay in front of the entrance".

Yes, I can make new toons, yes, devs will still add non-50 content, but the fact is, now more than ever, I want to play my 50s, and judging by the fact that I can count the non-50s currently connected on my server with just one hand, I'd think I'm not alone in that case. For some players, GSA is a huge opportunity to go play their characters on a new "dimension" (moving from Vigilance to Freedom, that's a whole new dimension to the game), but having such a restrective price will prevent them for being able to enjoy that GSA.

I wouldn't say that if we were in some kind of MMO were you basically level one toon and stay with it for the rest of your life, but here and now, that's not the case. We have many 50s, we have an opportunity to (re)play them (Incarnate), and we also have the chance to move to NYC when we could not see more than Kansas (to quote Memphis_Bill famous post).

So basically, my point is : (Incarnate stuff) + (Global Server Access) = (I want to move my 50s). And $10 per transfer when I had 6 years to level 50s seem a little too much, even though it's way less than whoever.

They didn't do anywhere near enough. I think we're all in agreement that the majority of players do NOT read the forums. And, though this is anecdotal, most (more than half) of their email announcements do not reach me.

They need to fix their crummy email system and make sure to always post on the launcher.

Bulldookey.

The fact that the majority of players are too lazy to get off their butts and check the announcements on the forums, or the main website to keep informed on what's going on in the game only means that they have no one to blame but themselves when they miss out on sales and events.

Willful ignorance is not an excuse.
