No "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" Trailer thread yet?
This entire film is just market research for using Gorilla Grodd in the Flash movie down the road.

Top notch special effects for movie which has a lead actor that I highly doubt people are sure he can carry a film yet. Nothing in the trailer makes me believe he can. I actually looked up the 2001 version because I thought it was deemed a huge flop. It made 362mill worldwide. Oops. Makes me wonder why they waited 10 years to do another one.

Weight training: Because you'll never hear someone lament "If only I were weaker, I could have saved them."
James Franco can't carry a movie? Tell that to this year's Oscars.
|
Let me restate this to what I meant. Domestic intake was $18 million. Worldwide it grossed $50 million. If it had any sort of budget it likely might not have made money. Honestly, how many people see the name James Franco and go, "Man, I got to see that movie because he's in it?" All the more so since it was vastly agreed he tanked at hosting the Oscars. FYI, Your Highness currently has only made 11.5 mil and that at least has Portman's rear promoting it. Even if I like him more than say Russell Brand, at least people go to Brand's movies.

In this particular instance, the Apes franchise and CGI will be the major drawing points no matter who's in the lead role.

#1. I think people who go to movies based on who's in it is kinda pathetic.
#2. The movie looks like it's a fail that missed the part in the Planet of the Apes movies where they discuss the process that took place that led to the fall of man. It wasn't some sudden thing... Primates were turned into pets and eventually became smart enough to talk and organize and one struck out and then seems to have formed a cult underground.
That is a lot more realistic, even in today's setting than a few hundred, at best, apes that were genetically altered suddenly went berserk and was able to topple 7 billion humans.
Loose --> not tight.
Lose --> Did not win, misplace, cannot find, subtract.
One extra 'o' makes a big difference.

One small monkey the size of a house cat is more than a match for a human being. Chimpanzees can rip you from limb to limb and -- if you could somehow convince him to do it -- an adult male gorilla can bench press 2,000 pounds. Give them the ability to think like us and we just moved down a notch on the food chain.
This interests me because it looks to be the first actual science fiction version of the story since Pierre Boulle's original novel, rather than an allegorical fantasy in the manner of every other iteration.

Shouldn't that apply to people that don't go to movies based solely on who is in it or who directed it, as well?

Example...
I know generally what I'm going to get from a Kevin Smith film with Tom Cruise in it because Kevin Smith has a distinctive style. I don't however know what I'd get out of Tom Cruise in a Kevin Smith film because Cruise only has his performance which is drastically altered by Smith and his editor.

Also...tactical nukes, napalm, grenades, jets, and tanks beat brute force of Smart Gorillas.

As for what i saw in the trailier i would be more likely to believe "Monkey Shines" could happen than the almost over night transformations that appear to happen in "rise of the Planet of the Apes" ...plus how can it be an Apes film without Roddy McDowall as Caesar??
Humans had the ability to think for a long time before we were ever able to do anything with it in terms of our Human heritage.

They don't have to INVENT civilization, they just have to take ours. Apes are faster than us, stronger than us and more resilient than us. The only thing we have over them is our freakishly large brains. Equalize that particular playing field and we're fighting an uphill battle.

What does that even mean?

Hmmm a war with Super Smart Apes vs Humans.
Lets see what the apes have going for them.
1. They have been alter to be as smart as us.
2. 3 times stronger than us.
Ok sure thats some good advantages.
Lets see what the humans have going for them.
1. There are more of us.
2. Tech. Tanks, guns, nukes, fighter jets and helicoppers etc.
And the apes win? I dont think so. This is why i couldnt get into the orginals

accepting most zombie apocalypse scenarios. as for some other smart species dominating the planet over us, i can dig it. being smart enough to use tools is one thing, but if they observe us using our tools and turn that against us, yeah, i can see someone overreacting and screwing the pooch because of it.
as for the original series, the first two were the only ones worth watching. after that, it turned to crap. in this case, we're not even going to get THAT far before it turns to grok.
mebbe we'll get lucky and just before he dies at the end Franco hits the button the blows the whole damn thing up.

Is the primate population even large enough to mount a threat atm?
Didn't the French hunt them down for the happy meals in their skulls or something?

I would just tell you to take a look at any insurgent battle ever fought. From the Revolutionary War to modern day, guerrilla warfare (no pun intended) is incredibly hard to counter. Imagine if those same guerrillas had mecha combat suits that increased their speed and strength 5-fold. It doesn't take that many of them to make one helluva mess.

A "Rise of the apes" scenario would not have this advantage, since the population of great apes in and around the San Francisco area is limited to less than a hundred in zoos and universities and the like, and the likelihood of an innocent ape just walking down the Embarcadero is pretty minimal. Therefore if you were taking fire from somewhere and then you see an ape walking away and acting casual, you're probably clear to engage. It's not like they're the Viet Cong. They don't look like the local populace.
I'm not saying "gorilla tactics" would be useless, I just think that would be a non-insignificant disadvantage they'd have to overcome.

Sartre once said, "Hell is other people." What does that make an MMO?
Part of the advantage human guerrilla fighters have over gorilla guerrillas have, however, is the fact that they can "naturalize" with the population. It's possible for revolutionaries to strike from the cover of the crowd because they can then blend in with that crowd. It's never possible to know who is a combatant and who is a civilian. They can hide in plain sight, so to speak.
