Being Charged Upkeep for Basic Plot?

Base upkeep used to be calculated by plot, but Issue 13 changed the rent calculations to be based on certain items in the base instead. An article on base rent can be found on ParagonWiki.

While you do have to pay Rent on all Base plot sizes now, overall, the Rent is way cheaper. It's practically negligible. I think my highest Rent is around 1900 Prestige on a maxed out starter plot.

Beginning in Issue 13, base rent will be calculated based on the number and type of items placed in a base. Plot size and security/hidden status no longer have any effect on rent. Please note that Items of Power no longer provide Upkeep bonuses under this new system.

Storage Bins 100 prestige each
Auto-Doc / Tree of Wonders 100 prestige
Combat Logs / Contemplation Charts 100 prestige
Robo-Surgery / Spirit Signal 100 prestige
Advanced Worktable / Advanced Forge 100 prestige
Expert Worktable / Expert Forge 100 prestige
Robotic Fabricator / Flames of Hephaestus 100 prestige
Radiation Emulator / Enchanting Crucible 100 prestige
Linear Accelerator / Arcane Crucible 200 prestige
Supercollider / Mystic Crucible 300 prestige

Thanks for the great info, everyone! I'm having to consider whether the bases are worth keeping in light of this new annoyance. Bases are just useful enough to keep around all on their own, but if I'm going to have these micro rents due on a regular basis, like so many mosquitoes, I might just get the spray out and end them all together.

Ignoring the microrent long enough to get locked out of the base on the rare occasion I do want access is especially annoying. I'd almost really rather not bother with it.

Well, I'll think about it.

Indeed. I disagree quite strongly with the OP, but that's fine. I feel the same way about PVP as he does about rent, so I stay out of the arena. It's all good as long as you enjoy yourself, and don't spoil anyone else's fun.
I'm more than happy with paying a pittance for rent; it's better than having to try to scrape together massive amounts of prestige to avoid having my base locked (I run a two-man SG with my girlfriend on each side of the game, earning enough to pay rent was sometimes tricky, especially since we've usually had the biggest plot we could afford).

That would be awesome. Another option I'd be happy with would be an auxillary control device that automatically pays rent for you. Since it autopays, you'd be paying rent every 2 weeks, whereas manual payments can be spaced out every 6 weeks; such is the price of convenience. When the device pays rent, it can send a tell to the Super Leader informing them (kinda like the "too busy" tells from the market), and if the SL is offline, have it notify them on their next login.

Don't get me wrong, I would *love* to have a base rent autopay option, since I've got 5 personal bases spread across 4 servers.

However, I really don't find it much of a burden to trek to Atlas to pay these days, now that the green and yellow lines have been merged and Atlas is one of the places you can get to using the Ouro portal.

That's it?! o.O

They should add rent for using cabinets and bookshelves!

Yes. That's annoying.

Being forced to spend hours even days and weeks grinding for prestige so the base doesn't get locked at the end of the month is annoying.

Taking maybe 20 minutes to run 1-3 missions in SG mode once a month to earn the pittance you need for rent doesn't even register on the annoyance meter.

The truth of the matter is that Rent is so low you don't even have to worry about paying Rent. Once your base is designed you can easily have enough prestige accumulated to pay rent for years.

Edit: For example I have a base on Virtue that is on the largest plot possible and has every item I could buy and I still have 28,000,000+ prestige left over. My monthly rent is 3,000 per month. I can pay my rent for the next 777 years before I need to go back into SG mode.

The act of paying rent is annoying? I made on of my semi retired characters the SG Leader and have it standing next to the SG register so it only takes 35 seconds to click on the contact, pay rent and switch characters. The bulk of the time is spent waiting for the character to log off.

As somebody who started a base when they first came out, rent is just annoying at this point. Yes, it's so cheap compared to when it first started(shudders), but the simple fact that I have to go pay a whole 300 prestige for a base is just a badly implemented idea. Fun fact, there's virtually no reason to use a base outside of ease of use getting to hazard zones via beacons. I have taken breaks that lasted for months only to see the base rent left unpaid while I was gone. What this tells me is that bases are generally not needed. Great idea, horrible execution, ignored for way too long, and now what little features it does do have been streamlined elsewhere to where the base's version of it is hardly used. Ever.

If you think bases aren't needed anymore Amy then don't use them. You can't claim you need them for storage because the email feature let's us store more stuff on our accounts than we can ever hope to store in a base.

The most a base can hold is 1800 items.

The most our accounts can hold until the server lists merge

NA Account (144-396 characters)
Inspiration slots - 2,880/7,920
Invention Salvage slots - 9,360/25,740
Recipe Slots - 3,600/9,900
CH Transaction slots - 3,168/8,712 (then in stacks of 10) 31,680/87,120
Vault - 7,200/19,800
Email - 20 global slots

So since you don't need a base for storage or transportation, you have no reason to have a base at all unless you enjoy base building.

To the OP I'd say if you're going abandon some of your bases due to the need to pay rent, you might want to just let them go inactive if it's practical to do so, rather than deleting them.

There was a comment by a redname a while back that implied that they are aware of the annoyance caused by paying base rent and will be mindful of the issue when they can get around to addressing base issues. I take that to mean that at some point in the future it may not be as much of a hassle as it is currently. The downside is that, given their history with this sort of thing, that change could be years away.

As was recommended, one of the best ways to handle this is to have a dedicated alt parked by the registrar to make payments (atlas city hall blueside, arachnos building marconeville Port Oaks, redside). then, in a worst-case scenario you have to log into the character and log back into the one you wanted to play.

Not nearly as bad as travelling usually, though blueside with the o-portal access might be faster depending on your load screens =)

I use them less and less. If I move all of my characters to Steel I could basically not need one. In Steel I have the market and the university to craft. The rail system is close by as well. About the only reason I leave somebody in Atlas is...to be close by to pay rent. Bases are good for easy access to hazard zones so I'll pay rent if I'm doing a TF and that's about going to be it. I hardly use vaults at all. I use bins a very small amount, but I could change to where they aren't needed.

Well if you ever decide to get rid of the bins then the base should be free unless you use those tables that create those 15 minute inspiration thingy's.

For me the only reasons I use the stuff that incurs rent is because the items fit the theme of the room I'm decorating, and I like stuff that lights up. And like you I rarely use a base far any type of transportation.

I think the only thing I actually use is the crafting table, and even that isn't often.

If you mean the empowerment stations, the buffs last for one hour, even though the text says 15 minutes. Last I checked, they also stay with you even if you are defeated.
