I'm pretty sure that Going Rogue alone will let you access CoH and CoV as well. CoH and CoV have been sold in the past as separate games, but they all run on the same servers, so yes you'll run into Heroes, Villains, and if you go to their zones, Praetorians.

Certain costume pieces are unlocked with certain versions of the game, but they're not faction-restricted. You can use the Praetoria Police pieces without being a Praetorian, for example.

Paragon Wiki is a great resource for most things about the game. If you want build advice, you should try the forum for the relevant archetype. Mids Hero Designer, which you can get here, is excellent for planning your builds and is the format in which you will usually see builds on these board.

Welcome to the game!

To my knowladge CoH/CoV are the "same" game now if you own one you own the other. So its know as CoX. GR is not its own game its just an expantion, so i think you would need to buy either CoH or CoV for it to do anything. Anyway, there are Co-op zones where Heroes and villians can team together and sutff. You will also run into villians that have turned good and vice versa. But "true" villains are stuck in the Rouge Isles and "true" Hero stuck in the Paragon City. But they can still visit the Co-op zones and actually go to Praetoria.

Paragon Wiki has an insane amount of info on most everything. Just type in an archtype and they likely have a decent guide on it, as well as their stats etc. There is also Red Tomax it has a lot of real hardcode data on power, it can get a bit technical at times. I actually use mids to find out numbers on powers, I dont know if that link includes the newest version though.

I don't think there are any costume options that are only for a hero or only for a villian. There are however some costume pieces that you have to unlock. And there are Epic archetypes or "ATs."

Welcome to the game

Oh, and Guardian is the best server (thats a joke people dont worry) :P

First off, welcome to the game and to the forums!

I'm going to break this up a little bit and make it easier to read.

Quote:
First off is CoH and COV and Going rouge 3 separate games as in will you run into players from the Praetorian cities? I'm sure you'll see people from the CoH but I assume that's for the PvP side of things.
CoH and CoV and Praetoria are all the same game to some degree. For instance, if you buy just CoH somehow, you have access to CoV as well. However, in order to access the Praetorian content, you need to have purchased Going Rogue (however, purchasing Going Rogue gives you access to all three sides).

However, the only time you will interact directly with people on the "other side" is in PvP. But if you have Going rogue, you can switch sides.

Quote:
Are there costume options and archetypes that u can ONLY access being hero/villain/Praetorian?
Costume options aren't limited like that for the most part. A Hero has the same costume options that a villain does. There are a few options that you can only get if you've purchased Going Rogue, however, and others that will need to be unlocked within the game itself.

If you start on hero-side, you can only make the hero Archetypes (ATs), and if you start on villain-side, you can only make the villain ATs. If you start in Praetorian, you can make any non-epic AT from either side. Epic ATs are linked to their respective sides, and open up once you get a level 20 villain or hero, respectively. Getting to level 20 as a hero gets you Peacebringers and Warshades (Kheldians as a generic term), and getting to level 20 as a villain gets you Arachnos Soldiers or Arachnos Widows. Eat of the Epic ATs can only be created on it's respective side of the game.

I also would like to know if there is a site or something that gives a better description of the Archs and powers and maybe some build suggestions.
ParagonWiki is a great resource, as are the forums here. Build suggestions are actually usually done on the forums themselves. But you should definitely check out ParagonWiki for the basics.

CoH/CoV and Going Rogue are all the same gameso to speak. While you have to purchase Going Rogue seperatly (Or just pay a little extra for all 3), there are numerus locations where a player from one area can interact with players from another, and any player with access to Going Rogue can not only make a hero, villian, or praetorian, but can freely switch between them. Players without Going Rogue can't switch alignments, but can create both heros and villians (It's been years since someone had to purchase both CoH and CoV seperatly.).
For more detailed descriptions, try Paragon Wiki and for builds, try the AT forums.

There are some costumes, including a variety of wings and some different boots, that you can craft with recipes. After crafting, the costume would be available for that character only, others would have to craft them separately.

There are some costumes, including angel/demon wings, samurai, armor, etc, that are "veteran" rewards. You get them for having been subscribed to the game for 9 months or 15 months or whatever. These will be available for any of your characters once you've earned them.

There are some costumes that you have to purchase costume packs in order to use. These are usually around $10.00, and some come with other nice powers -- ninja run with the ninja pack, for example. These are available to all your characters.

There are some costumes that you need to earn in the game -- Vanguard armor pieces, the roman armor that you get from running the Imperious Task Force, the witch's hat that you get from the Katie Hannon Task Force. There's only a few of these, but they are only available on the character that earns them. You'd have to earn them again for another character to use those costume pieces.

There are a few other costume pieces that came with different packaged versions of the game, like the special alpha and omega costumes you got with the complete GR pack.

There are a lot of costume options out there. ^_^

the long full capes are only available after lvl 20, and you have to run a couple missions to unlock them.

same thing with most auras, except they are only available after lvl 30.

Basic History:

City of Heroes and City of Villains started out as two separate games (same universe, but very little cross over), but are now considered one game. You get one, you get the ability to create and start characters in the other. Heroes start off in Paragon City (commonly refered to as the Blue-side). Villains start off in the Rogue Isles (Red-side). Later on in the game there is some cross faction gaming in certain zones.

City of Heroes: Going Rogue is an expansion to the original two games that kinda did the final merging and allowed characters that started off as heroes (or villains) to cross over and become the other faction or jump back and forth in a grey area and play in both areas through completing various missions.

It also opened up a new lower-level content area to start in called Praetoria, that allows you to go to either Paragon City OR Rogue Isles once you reach the end of that area's content (level 20), as well as some new end-game content to allow further character development past level 50 (the game's long standing level cap).

There are many other details around this, including what archetypes can start in what area that are all spelled out in the wiki. Basics: Both Red and Blue sides have 7 possible starting archetypes (5 standard and 2 epic. Epics are unlocked by reaching level 20 on their respective side), for a total of 14 different archetypes. All can start crossing over from one side to the other at level 20. Praetoria allows any of the 10 standard archetypes to start with, and you chose where you go at level 20.

As far as buying the client, if you buy a box in a store, its most likely now the City of Heroes: Going Rogue - Complete Edition, which gets you City of Heroes/Villains AND the Going Rogue Expansion (as well as a free month and a few other costume bits, bonus powers, etc). You don't even need to buy a box though. The client to play with is a free download online, however you'll need a subscription and you won't get the Going Rogue expansion. Just the expansion is available as a add on to your subscription separate online as well.

For what its worth, if you want to try the game out past the trial, get the Going Rogue expansion. It opens up some of the newer and more fun content in the game especially for lower levels, and gives you a lot more options for game progression.

Welcome to the game and the forums!

For costume options, more things can be unlocked through the game by way of 1) unlockable content, 2) Capes at Level 20, 3) Auras at Level 30, 4) veteran rewards, 5) recipes, and 6) online purchasable Booster and Item Packs.

1) Unlockable Content (costume pieces, stores, NPCs, weapons, emotes): These groups can be unlocked through a variety of specific requirements (x amount of defeats of certain NPCs, task completions, etc). You can find sections in the Paragon Wiki that list specifically what you can get for unlockable content from here.

2) Capes at Level 20: once you train to Level 20, you can go to either City Hall Representative for heroes (via Atlas Park City Hall) or Kalinda or Matthew Burke for villains (in Mercy Isle). Get a mission arc from those contacts, complete the arc, and capes are unlocked. You have to go to a tailor or Facemaker to actually add/change the capes once unlocked. NOTE: Some capes are available at level 1 from veteran rewards and purchasable booster/item packs as well.

3) Auras as Level 30: same as above, except after training to level 30. Contacts are the same. NOTE: Some auras are available at level 1 from purchasable booster/item packs as well.

4) Veteran Rewards: Each 3 months you keep your game account active, you can receive Veteran Rewards. Costume items, wings, capes, unique pets, etc can be earned over time. Here is the CoH Website page on this and here is the ParagonWiki link about them.

5) Recipes: Pool E drops for costume recipes (wings, boots, etc) can be acheived through normal gaemplay drops, as well as buying these recipes in the Consignment Center (Wentworth's) (hero side), the Black Market (villain side), or the Trading House/Underground Trader (Praetorian side). Here is the ParagonWiki link for this.

6) Online Purchasable Item/Booster Packs: You can purchase via the NCSoft Store various themed Item and Booster Packs that contain large quantities of additional costumes, auras, unique powers (such as Ninja Run or Beast Run -gotzta haz one a dem!), capes, and more. Most packs go for $9.99 or less. Go here to get a rundown from ParagonWiki of what is available.

Also, with the purchase of the Complete Collection, you have access to City of Heroes, City of Villains and Praetorian content - the full spectrum, ergo, you are all set to get the full breadth of gaming experience with the Complete Collection!

If there is anything else we can help with let us know. One thing you'll find out about this game's community is it's very helpful!

Again, welcome aboard!

You will find that the people in City of Heroes/Villains mostly try to be helpful and encouraging to new players. As many people said, the Paragonwiki is a great source for information about the game generally. The forums are great places to ask questions about specific things.

There are also a lot of guides written by players. These are a great place to go for information on a wide range of topics . . . from the game's story, to technical issues, to how to make binds for making your control of your character better to detailed explanations of what each power in a powerset combination does. You can look HERE for the Table of Contents to find guides that may be helpful. If you want to play an Invulnerability tank, then look for guides on Tanks, and look for any guides on the Invulnerability power set under Tanks.

Please note that there is no "editing" of these guides . . . people just write them up and post them, and some are better than others. But the community is pretty good at pointing out mistakes or differences of opinion, so you can usually tell the good ones from the responses to the guide and how often it has been viewed. Also, the pages showing all the guides available are a bit out of date, so you may need to look later in the thread for the most recent guides.

Regarding choice of what archetype and primary/secondary powerset combo to play: There are a mind-boggling number of possible combinations in the game. All of them are playable, and most of them are reasonably well-balanced.

My advice to newcomers is to try a few different kinds of characters. Let your imagination roam and make some combination that sounds cool, try to get a name you like, and a costume you like. It may sound implausible, but I've found that little things sometimes make me love a character a lot more than I expected I would, and conversely some characters who are mechanically very strong have never really gelled for me because they didn't have that certain intangible "something."

Then go forth, meet people, have adventures, and keep your eyes open! One of my favorite things about is game is the enormous variety of different colorful (literally!) characters you'll see wandering about. Unlike some games, this one doesn't have a single theme like "high fantasy" or "steampunk;" you'll see every sort of look, personality, and backstory eventually.

I am going to come back on what Sailboat said just for emphasis. I agree with what he said. Almost all combinations if built towards particular goals will be at least successful if not the most game-dominating. Or in other words, you really have to go out of your way to make a hero/villain/rogue that really sucks or is so challenging it is unplayable. There are also slotting variations for builds that are very similar which yield various levels of successful capabilities. If that isn't encouraging enough, you get three free tries to make a build, alternate builds for the same character. With the many ways to earn respecs, getting the most out of your concept is a fun adventure in itself.

The one point I would like to state on behalf of the game developers is there IS NO GAME with a greater flexibility on costume and colorization of your creations. NOTHING compares.

Did you come from DCUO? Their game is different from COH. PVP and PVE are on separate servers there and you have to buy/earn all high end costume pieces.

My advice to you, buy the CoH boosters and the costume stuff will take care of itself.

One more thing GR will let you create charcters in CoV, CoH and Praetoria. In Prae, you can create any of the archetypes in that zone.

Welcome to the game and the forums!

One thing to suggest that I didn't see mentioned before is to find and start using the global channels for the server you're playing one. If you suddenly find you have a question while in game, that's a great place to start. In a lot of cases (a least on the servers I play on) it's also the best way to find teams, too.
