Screen Shots from costume design screen

I'm back from a 2 year absence, and I'm trying to take screen shots of a few of characters in the costume design screen so I can have reference art for a local artist to do illustrations on my heroes.

I used to just hit print screen and then paste from clip board into GIMP to get the images. Now every time I try that I get an all black image.

Is it no longer possible to get images from the costume design screen, or am I doing it wrong ?

Are you running full screen? Lately I have noticed this happens every time I run full screen. The way I get around it is to bring up the Start bar, by hitting Alt-Tab. Even if I have to bring a window in front of the game screen, I can just move it off to one side and get a valid screen shot of the section of the screen where the costume is.

Another possibility, of course, is to try windowed mode. Or, just find a good spot in game to take a screenshot (in the screenshots folder) and rotate the camera so you get a front view of your character.

I use the Snipping Tool that comes with windows. Lotta people do it a lotta different ways.

The Snipping Tool is included in Vista and 7 (if you're still on XP, shame on you! ). You can find it by just typing 'snipping tool' in the start menu, or going to start menu -> all programs -> accessories -> snipping tool. I love the Snipping Tool, since it includes built-in cropping that's a lot nicer than mspaint's (and faster to load than the gimp... and isn't the gimp).

Just remember that the Snipping Tool is part of the Tablet PC Components (for some reason) and may not be installed by default (or available at all) depending on your Windows version.

Hey, cool! Thanks, I didn't even realize my computer had this. This should make taking screenshots a lot easier!

I, personally, haven't had any luck with the snipping tool, when CoH is in fullscreen, the result is the same as the printscreen button - solid black.

That's more likely than not a driver issue. Updating your driver might fix it.

I had no idea that the snipping tool even existed. That's really neat!

Thank you for the suggestions.

I never even new about the snip tool, it worked perfectly.

If you have Steam, you can run CoH through it and then use the Steam Overlay's new Screenshot functionality to take screenshots, though they can be a bugger to find for export.

I've a friend who dual-boots XP & 7 because apparently Masters of Orion 2 won't play even in XP compatibility mode.

A quick search suggests that's a DOS-based game... that should run perfectly fine in dosbox. Alternatively, for older games, you can install many in VMWare/VirtualBox in an XP/98/95 VM and play them fine.

I've, personally, not encountered any applications that worked in XP that didn't work in Vista/7, although I had quite a number that stopped working in both 98->ME (then again, ME was just fail all around) and from 98/ME -> XP.

My older version of PhotoShop will not run on Windows 7 (CS2). I even checked Adobe's support forums, and Adobe's response was to upgrade because the older versions were not supported on the newer OS.

A quick google search shows quite a number of people are using Photoshop CS2 on Windows 7 with no issues. Adobe's response isn't surprising, that just means that Windows 7 came out after CS2, not that CS2 doesn't/can't work on Windows 7 (Adobe has a long reputation for being just all around *** hats).

I have the same problem (GTX460 with the lastest drivers) and it's been like that ever since I moved to Win7.

Strange, I'm running Photoshop CS on Win7 x64 Enterprise with no problems at all.

There must be some "trick" to get it to work, because when I go to install it I get an error message stating that it is not compatible with my OS and will not let me install it.

I guess I will need to look into this further and see if I can get it to work for me... I would hate to have to shell out another couple hundred dollars just to be able to use PS again.

Also, if any of you have any tips on how to get it to work, please send me a Private Message, I would greatly appreciate it.

That means Adobe (well known jackasses) intentionally put a check in to prevent you from attempting to install it on Vista/7, not that there'd actually be issues.

Microsoft actually said the reason that Window 7's version number is 6.1 (and not 7) is because of software explicitly checks the version number of Windows... aka the Adobes of the world.

Adobe would prefer you shell out the money, that's why they included the check and tell you it's not supported.

You could try setting the compatibility mode to XP Service Pack 3 and see if that fools the installer. If that doesn't work, someone out there probably has a hack of some sort that disables the money-grabbing check.

I always used to run CoX in full screen, but I've recently moved to windowed and like it much better.

When I had an issue taking screenies of the CC (before I was told about the Snipping Tool) my workaround was as follows...

1. Enter the Costume Editor.
2. Bring up your preferred image editing program, so that it has focus.
3. Drag Paint/CS/etc until just a portion of it is visible on-screen, say the title bar down at the bottom of your screen.
4. Hit Print Screen.
5. Paste into your editing program.

Not very elegant, but it works.

They said that CS2 is "too old" to run on Win7? Fascinating. I'm running Photoshop 7 on Win 7 and it installed and worked perfectly. I guess it was a bit later on that they decided to be grubbing jerks.

I just wanted to let everyone know that I did some research and was finally able to get PhotoShop installed and working. YEAH!!!!!

I had to modify the install directory path during installation to get it to work correctly. I found out that Windows 7 uses a different directory path syntax than XP and so it was looking for something that didn't exist which is why I was getting the error. So, after adjusting the install path it installed with no problems. I also set it to run as Administrator and as WIN XP SP3 compatibility mode and it works just fine now.

So, thanks to all of you for your great feedback. I can now get back to digital paining in PS!

I am happy again.
