You can't just download it again?

I still had the launcher downloaded from back when I tested Aion. I never had any issues with it then, so I don't know if it's supposed to be bad or not. I just updated it and ran it. It was smart enough to list all three of my CoH installs (live, test, beta) and tell me which ones require patching. No more having three icons on the desktop and check them periodically. That's pretty nice.

Seems to download pretty fast too.

There are options to automatically exit the launcher once you launch a game and to disable it opening at startup. Both options work just fine.

It's nowhere NEAR as painful an experience as some of you think it's going to be.

Also on topic, the new aura is cool. Already using it for my Plant/Earth/Fire Dom. She now has fireballs swirling out of her lava mud pots. And goes well with her fire armor.

I can see it working good as fire, spirits, or just general magicy aura. One of my friends used it for an energy/psi toon that looks good.

It asks if it can run it the background, and you can set it as well in the options. So it's actually pretty good so far. No complaints at all really.

They all laughed at me when I said I wanted to be a comedian.
But I showed them, and nobody's laughing at me now!

So, there's going to be a point where future characters *don't* get the aura?

The Abrams is one of the most effective war machines on the planet. - R. Lee Ermy.

Q: How do you wreck an Abrams?

A: You crash into another one.

Actually I strongly suspect this is not a "one time exculsive" but rather something more like "we were going to toss this new aura into I20 anyway so let's make it an early preview to encourage people to try the new launcher now" deal. This was likely something everyone was going to get anyway.

Well, the launcher just runs the same cityofheroes.exe as the old updater does, so it must somehow communicate to the client that it's being used so the client can tell the server to unlock the auras on your account. Long story short, the decision to unlock is ultimately made on your computer, so in theory there must a way of telling the client to do it without actually installing the NCLauncher.

Surely it's not as simple as running "cityofheroes.exe -project coh -launcher" or something silly like that.

Not that it really matters if people can unlock it without the ncsoft launcher, since eventually we'll all have to use it to get patches anyway (without which you can't even log in).

Oh I just *love* this launcher.... NOT

The lousy thing is causing a complete download and system check of CoH.

OK,

Downloaded it and reset the preferences to make it as unobtrusive as possible. So far, so good, looks simple enough. With any luck, I'll have a chance to try it out later on tonight.

My old desktop icons didn't go away though. Should they have?

Statesmonkey Sez: Lighten up! It's a game, for Lincoln's sake!
Also: Six years of casual play begins to look an awful lot like one year of hardcore play.

Mine all stayed. I can still use the old CoX only launchers via those icons or the NCsoft complete launcher. The more I use it currently, the more I'm liking the NCsoft launcher--especially since it keeps test and beta versions up to date at a glance.

It's also much more intelligent about Windows 7's permissions, and asks on non-administrative startup for permission to modify files that may cause Windows to ask for said permissions via UAC. Thumbs up there.

Pretty soon the old updaters won't work, so we'll be deleting them off the desktop anyway.

Loose --> not tight.
Lose --> Did not win, misplace, cannot find, subtract.
One extra 'o' makes a big difference.

Except that it's dumb about it and does it wrong

Since I have a slightly non-standard permissions setup (non-standard but perfectly valid -- a Games group rather than simply granting Full Control to all users), it prompts me on every startup to change permissions when it doesn't need to. If it would just try to update the files it would work fine. Even accepting the changes doesn't work because I have UAC disabled and my non-admin account can't change permissions on that directory.

Filed a bug report, but I'm not holding my breath.

Amen to that. I have a laundry list of gripes about the NCSoft launcher, but am glad that it actually launches the correct browser unlike the old one.
