New AT to level? help please
Storm/Sonic defender.
Ele/ stalker. Didn't get mine high enough to be PvP worthy since I rerolled as KM/ stalker instead for the animations. But it was fun.
I'll throw my current project into the discussion... Earth/Sonic controller. Great holds with Earth, can't remember the exact numbers, but pretty sure stoney is capped to every damage type with your shields and bubble on him, plus giving -20% resistance with holla hoops. I took Stone Mastery APP for the shield and being able to slot + recharge proc from FF in Fissure... It's a lot of fun and I didn't see either powers on your list.
I don't really do any PvP so I can't speak to that, but I do have an ele/nin stalker and I could see that being entertaining in PvP
I'll suggest an Ill/storm troller. Kinda a classic at this point but neither set was listed in your toons, Ill is very solo-able and storm is a beast for damage output at later levels. Tornado, freezing rain, and snow storm all offer decent debuffs when teaming and lightning storm greatly increases damage for for AV fights especially. Although my favorite toon is something else for other reasons, my Ill/storm is the most fun toon I have.
Wash: "I've been under fire before. Well ... I've been in a fire. Actually, I was fired. I can handle myself."
Disc Priest
we should level our Widows or PB / WS or blaster together!
Dark/Ice or Dark/Sonic defender. Dark is a super debuffer (Darkest Night, Howling Twilight, Tar Patch) with plenty of control powers (Tar Patch, Fearsome Stare, Petrifying Gaze, Black Hole -- if you're into intangibility), plus an excellent heal and invisibility. AND the only defender with a pet... Fluffy!
Ice adds even more control, and by stacking Petrifying Gaze with Freeze Ray and/or Bitter Freeze Ray, you can hold even most bosses.
Sonic is for all you Offenders out there. Stack the -Res of a few sonic attacks on top of the -Res of Tar Patch and you're in the -75% Res range easy, which means you're dealing some serious damage.
A lot of people like Dark/Dark, but you said you're looking for something unusual. Ice or Sonic in combo with Dark meet that criteria, I think.
Dark is extremely viable solo (especially with the Defender's +30% solo damage bonus), and -- even with the same build -- very useful in groups. Defenders in general and Dark in particular require good strategy to do well against large spawns (meeting your "challenging" requirement), which I think makes them very fun to play... no simple button mashing for a Dark!
So... come to the Dark side!
Claws/Fire Brute is my suggestion. Now let me tell you why.
Before I stumbled on this combination I tried a lot of different things.
At 50 I have a Fire/Rad Controller and a Fire/Emp Controller as well. There is a Claws/SR SCrapper and a Fire/Fire Tank. Throw on top a Empathy/SOnic Defender and a bunch of alts at different levels. Currently I'm playing a Rad/Electric Defender which is actually a lot of fun. She kind of feels like a Blapper with really good Def cause my Debuffs are making things miss a lot.
So I can understand the desire to experiment with something different.
Claws is a devastating set with 2 AoE Eviscerate and Spin. There is also a Debuff attack so you can make the Boss not so bossy and a Damage Buff Attack so you can be even tougher.
Fire Armour is considered a soft secondary choice (I think that is the way you would say it starts off with squishie Resistance) but with proper use of Reactive Armours, Obliterations you build enough actual positional defence that if you really want you can stay alive in groups of +1/*5 with very little effort at all.
(I think it is called POsitional Defence for Range/Melee/AoE defences. Someone please correct me if I am wrong. It happens a lot more then I'm willing to admit actually. If you want just send me a PM informing me that I am wrong. Then I can sneak back here and edit my post and no one would be the wiser. Yes, lets do that.)
There is also a wonderful heal in Fire Armour , along with Consume which helps you get your Endurance back. If you run with Tough/Weave on all the time, which is what I do, then you will make good friends with Consume. I call mine Sammi.
Then you come to Burn. It is a PBAoE that helps prevent you being stuck by Imobolize attacks but more importantly does lots of damage to the baddies.
So you run into the middle of baddies with Blazing Aura turned on, hit your Build Up type swipe, do a quick SPin attack, Burn some baddies around you and if there happens to be anyone still standing, walk over and Eviscerate them. It is amusing to watch.
There is also a power that gives bonus damage to all attacks and extra for Fire based attacks. That helps too.
I know that sets of Oblits and Reactive Armours can get exspensive at times but just start bidding early and be patient. You will find you don't actually need to pay the silly prices after all.
So I vote Claws/Fire Brute.
Enjoy your day please.
Let me start by saying that I generally don't touch my 50's once I get them there. I prefer creating and lvling toons, though I do have the VR slot on my favorite toon, which took me 6 years to find.
A plant/rad/fire controller has becoming my most favorite toon out of every single one that I have. She has stackable creepers, stackable spirit tree, perma AM, and 7 seconds off perma hasten.
Even without those things she (was) is a lot of fun to play. She's the only 50 I bring out on almost a daily basis because she is just so fun! Highly reccomend it.

My Characters
I'd also suggest a plant controller. My plant/storm/stone controller has been the most beloved character i've ever created. it is simply too much fun, and is wicked on task forces. Ael there and I have duo'ed an ITF on our plant controllers. Its a great mob mauler
Combat Kangaroos, Justice Server. First 50's
Jirra Roo Plant/Storm/Stone/Musculature Controller
Combat Kangaroo Rifle/Energy/Mace/Spiritual Blaster
Kung Fu Kangaroo Martial Arts/Reflexes/Body/Spiritual Scrapper
Tribal Arc Shield/Elec/Mu/Spiritual Tanker
Fire/Ice blaster. Big damage, big vulnerability, fast play, big fun. Shiver and Ice Patch are the only things that slow down incoming damage. Get 'em before they get you.
(I recommend at least one level of Stealth. Strike first, strike last. )
... this is a very personal recommendation. What I love you may hate. Etc.

I would have to say Claws/Fire Brute too.
It is a really fun combo to play.
Also you get Shockwave too which is a good power too. It does a lot of KB but if you know how to use it, it will help you do more AoE damage and help keep you alive.
@kangaroo120y, Plant sound cool but I think a Plant dominator would be better.

Our two plant toons duoed the ITF in a little over an hour with NO temp pets or temp powers lilke nukes. I have played plant doms before and know what? I can't get the darn things past lvl 15. I took one to 22 when I gave myself a little PL with my other account, but I just do not enjoy playing it.
That plant/rad of mine.... <3 I play that 50 all of the time because its so fun, and I like controllers more than I like doms. Your friend could be the same way for all I know.
Your friend could always try both. He asked for suggestions, so we gave them.

My Characters
I don't see Warshade in you list of played things. My warshade was hands down the most fun experience I've ever had playing this game. Leveling the character, RPing the character, end-game tweaking the character... everything about him was an absolute blast.
Read the guide in my sig, then you'll want to play a MFing Warshade.
Where to now?

don'T attempt to read tHis mEssaGe, And believe Me, it is not a codE.
Why would a dominator automatically be better? Depending how its slotted and played that might not be true.

I mean I play a Plant/Emp for heavens sakes, and I usually hate being Mr Heelor or Mr Buffbot but it's just a fun, fun combo which attracts teams (who probably expect me to heal them, not realizing I much prefer buffing myself and the rest of the team off their sorry corpses instead. I do rez them afterwards though and lob Godmode their way next time it's up).
If you enjoy teaming, I would recommend an Ill/Rad controller. That isn't to say it's a bad solo combo, but it really shines on teams. Someone also mentioned Ill/storm which is also loads of fun. Basically any kind of illusion control would be my recommendation. It plays very differently from other controller sets.
I also have an archery/fire blaster that is just crazy ridiculous awesome, and once you get rain of arrows, it will be hard for any toon to match your mob killing speed. This combo really shines for me while soloing, but is always welcome on a team.
My first 50 was an energy/energy blaster. A lot of people will say avoid becasue the knock back isn't team friendly, but if played correctly this combo can carry a team.
Obviously I prefer ranged toons, but as far as melee goes, my elec/shield is loads of fun, but it is a late bloomer. Broadsword/shield is also a lot of fun, and the cotume options with two weapons to customize can make for a very epic looking character.

@Ael Rhiana, the word Dominator sounds impressive the word Controller sounds like the Ex....
@Dechs Kaison, Identity is the PB to my WS
Edit...
@Dechs Kaison, Identity is the PB to my MF Warshade
Plant/Anything is basically going to be fun regardless of AT.

Not everyone is going to like the same things. I love plant, but I don't like playing it on a dom, no idea why, I just don't. And I didn't like my plant/emp. Again, the guy asked for suggestions and I gave one.

yeah last time I made an emp it was issue 6.. i didn't touch the set again, i'm serious. Something about the set just grates on me. HOWEVER... I agree, plant/ anything should be fun.

Thanks for all suggestions gang!
I think i wanna do down the Controller/Dom route.
Either,
Grav,Plant,Ill,Elec / Storm, Rad, Sonic - Controller
or
Elec,Grav,Plant / ? not sure on secondary - Dominator
but i have still no ideas which! the majority of people seem to suggest plant control
so what works well with Plant Doms and Controllers, except Thorny? dont really like the visuals
I don't know, but I'm going to point out that I saw someone's pet a couple weeks ago that gave me my new favorite phrase: "Like putting lipstick on a Venus Fly Trap." Every now and then someone still surprises me with power coloring.

Hey all,
I have just got my Mastermind to 50 tonight and throughly enjoyed it now i am wanting to start something new, crazy, challenging and uncommon! im not really fussed about what AT it is but i want something interesting and dont really want a set which i have already done before, i have got,
Claws/Regen Scrapper
Stone/Ice Tanker
Ice/Ice Dominator
Bots/Dark Mastermind
AR/Traps Corruptor
and im leveling(with my brother);
Widow
Peacebringer
Electic/Devices Blaster
DP/Cold Defender
So..
i do play alot in teams but i also love to solo, i havnt really dont much pvp since i5 or i6 but if there is a setup which you guys found is good and challenging in pvp i might just start pvping again.
I was thinking about Ice/Elec Tanker as i havnt seen many around and i know they are challenging without proper resist slotting.
Any thoughts on what would fit my needs? or something that you thought was good and enjoyed?
Thanks Alot
