I thought this one was from another graphic novel as well.

I'm not sure if that makes me want to see this more or want to avoid this more . . .

(either way, it's probably destined to only make it onto the netflix list rather than $30.00 of movie theatre tickets)

That might be. That's what happens when you've been around long enough to have seen plenty of good and bad movies and have learned to tell the difference.

Other people have already assumed this movie "looks fine" from the trailer.
Why can't I think the opposite?

I already said earlier in this thread that I'm going to see this movie DESPITE the uncertainty I'm getting from the trailer.
Never let it be said that I don't express unjustified optimism from time to to time.

Yes. We've been getting nothing but optimism from you about this film.

I'm optimistic that it has a -chance- to be a good movie.
To blindly assume it'll either be bad or good sight-unseen is foolhardy.

For example I'm a Wonder Woman fan but even on the recent ongoing thread in this forum about the upcoming Wonder Woman TV show I've conceded many times that it's very likely to be a crummy show despite my hopes for it.

Sorry if being realistic seems like such a downer to everyone.

There's being realistic and being a negative nancy. The latter tends to involve attempting to stamp out optimism where it's found.

Perhaps I'd just rather be in the "expect it's going to suck and be pleasantly surprised when it's good" camp than the "assume it'll be good and then get disappointed when it isn't" camp. Call it strategy to maximize my enjoyment of a movie.

If that makes me a Negative Nancy then I'll just have to live with that.

Abandoning as many expectations for movies as possible has generally produced good results for me. I think the Sucker Punch that's being alluded to in the title refers to how they're choosing to represent the film in most trailers, which is an eye candy film, and the sucker punch is the substance.

Here's hoping for that "substance".

All I'm getting from the trailer is "oooh...that's the kind of visuals imax is made for". They drop the barest hints of plot, but I don't really go to the theatre for plot movies, unless it something that's looking to be phenomenal, or from one of a handful of directors. I work for the cable company so I can watch "don't need a big screen, and the story looks to be meh" movies at home for free soon enough.

I just realized this movie is conceptually similar to The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys.

This movie looks to be visually the Brazil of the anime fanboi generation. It's live action anime trope porn. There may be an interesting plot there, but can't really tell by all the over the top visuals.

It's Bayformers with all the knobs turned to 11. Multiple very hot actresses instead of just one with the chaos of action and explosions so off the charts that even people with severe ADD won't be bored.

My biggest fear is that it will end just like Brazil.

[NOTE: This is a necropost but since Sucker Punch is opening in theaters today I figured this thread is more relevant now than ever.]

Well as I sadly feared Sucker Punch is getting pummeled by the critics. RottenTomatoes has it rated at 23% as of the time I'm writing this post. Even the few "positive" reviews are less than flattering. I'm still probably going to go see it for the "cool visuals on a big screen" factor. But so much for the vague hope that there'd be an actual story/plot behind the pretty pictures. *shrugs*

Wow. I still want to see it! But, do I wake up early enough to see it before work or wait? :O Those are just some HORRIBLE reviews.

It was good for the visual imagery and cinematography, but don't go in expecting a plot.

I expect it to be very visually entertaining, much like Sin City and 300, but for a professional movie critic, I don't expect it has all that great of a story or superb acting which is what they are looking at. But for those who are into western comics and mange/anime, it will be rated fairly high.

Planning to see it this Sunday, not going to expect much from it and treat it as a popcorn flick.

I just simply find it annoying to tolerate the unfortunate idea that the only way we're ever going to get movies based on "western comics and manga/anime" is to churn out stuff that can't stand up to typical mainstream movie criticism. After all there's no law out there that says it's illegal to have BOTH of those things together in one movie is there?

I seriously do not demand "perfection" from a movie like Sucker Punch. But is it really too much to ask that more reviewers like it than hate it at the very least? I'm not asking for the Moon here am I?

well, moviebob, who also seemed to "get" scott pilgrim also seemed to like this one. http://www.escapistmagazine.com/vide...2-Sucker-Punch he and i dont always agree, in fact lately we agree a great deal less, but his review may address some of your concerns about depth.

i dunno, i find that for a large amount of movie reviewers, some genres such as action, horror and sci fi are not genres that ever review well. so thats why i tend to gravitate to certain reviewers opinions over others when it comes to movies of specific genres, like, say a heavily anime influenced over-the-top action film. for some the barriers of cultural awareness are just too high for older or less nerd culture friendly reviewers to enjoy, even if the nerd stuff turns out to be a mask of deeper and more compelling stories and characters, see again scott pilgrim, which did a bit better with critics but still wasnt a universal hit with them.

I'm seeing it no matter what. Critics aren't you, and only you can tell whether or not you like it.

Not to mention critics will laud the hell out of anything so long as it has the right people involved, regardless of it being good or not.
