Creation Deletion...and WTH
I made a fun new character Sapphire Thistle a plant/thorns dom.
I used the metallic suit and then used the Angelic pattern with the Scotland flag colors.
I also get the hit 35 and die issue. I used to get past it doing the sewer trial several times - but they "fixed" it and now its nearly impossible to get a team to even bother with it. We used to do that trial from 35-40 to get past those 5 levels of grind.
That has always been the sticking point and its a tough spot to get past. Once into your 40's it goes fast to 50.

It's like when you hit 32-35....you tend to crawl.
Happens all the time, but I certainly wouldn't delete any characters over it, unless you just really hate them.
I played my DP/Pain Corrupter to around 32 before getting bored and moving on to another character. He sat there for months, until I got bored of the other character I made. Then, as I glanced over my characters, I saw my Corrupter and remembered the fun I had and started playing him again. He just reached 45 last night. I'm getting bored again, but it's not because the character is bad. It's because I have ideas for other alts and an itch to play some of my already existing characters. As my desire to play other characters rises my desire to play my Corrupter wanes. But even if I don't push through to 50 right now, I know that some day in the future I will see him sitting in my character menu and remember how fun he is. At that point I will lose interest in whatever other character I'm playing at the time and enjoy my Corrupter once more. Also, don't buy the whole "I have to find which AT I am!" My first character was a Tank, and I found myself taking to the role easily. I would even say how I found "my AT." Then I made my Rad/Rad Defender. Then I made the only character I have ever taken straight to 50 with no breaks; my Warshade. I would even say that Warshades are my AT, and it probably is as close as it can get to being so, but then I could turn around and play a Scrapper. There are no "my AT's", just a bunch of fun characters ready to get played. |
Thanks for a lot of good advice. Perhaps I am just not a good builder. Thats possible. But...the game pretty much tells you what to do...in the overall. Like you know a path or at least have one.
Ill go back to the drawing board and figure it out, but thanks again for taking...a (Ill admit) a some what vanity thread and giving me some good advice.
Ill make the leap past 32-35 eventually...and then Ill be ok.
Ok. I used to be a controller player. Then a Dom Player. Then I tried a defender who was fun until 45 and boring now.
I have tried the veats, a corrupter. I think the only class I have not players is a Brute/Tank, because I just don't like the idea of it. Not so much my style. My problem is that I seem to either lose interest in something at 35, or in some cases 20. I can't find an AT that is "me" My friends list is packed and they want me to join them, but I sometimes just don't want to play anything I have, which is an issue because I delete pretty much everything and keep 4 key toons who I try and level, and even they will eventually get deleted. Except my 50 because she is my only one. And I don't like her at all. Not even enough to incarnate her or buy her cool recipies. (Emp/Psi/Power Mastry) and I only ever bring her out when the team is blaster heavy and they all get mezzed. It's not that I don't enjoy the game. I love all of the story plots. I love the feel of the game and the costume creator and all of that jazz, but Im not falling in love with anything I play, and I as an RPer should be loving them. All are concept, and all of them have backstories and such. Heck even my Widow who is fun...is now sort of slowing down. Im hitting a wall somewhere. Am I the only one who feels like this? Or is there a point when the AT you thought you liked just disolved. And again this is not for lack of trying or altitis, it's more to do with the issue of not finding something that is both thematic, and fun for me. |
i'm still not sure how i got one toon to 50 long ago but nothing else i find almost any reason to delete a toon after awhile. what gets me is how ungodly slow lvling is in this game lol. but i have a pretty long list of ideas but too many to pick from unless the unthinkable happens and i come up with a perfect character lol.
I came back to the game after awhile and just couldn't play my lvl 50 db/nin stalker like i used to not sure what happened either so i have mostly ranged types now but still hunting for a good melee replacement
I too am an altaholic. The issue I have with one-trick-pony characters is that I get bored of their one role. The only things that interest me are jacks of all trades.
Like, I get on my level 51 DP/sonic corr, with nice IOs and tier 3 cardiac alpha, to be the support anchor of my team. But then I get bored of the relatively weak orange numbers a corr throws up (even with scourge... I have no idea how defender players stick with their toons), the lack of survivability, and the weak soloability. I want something with more pew pew. So...
I get on my level 32 sonic/psi blaster. He has lots of cones of doom that just mow down the minions, and some strong single-target attacks for the toughies. But then he faceplants. A lot. Maybe I have a bad run of misses on some baddie, or my cone attacks miss something, or another group aggros. I took tough/weave but that only goes so far with that AT. I've gotten pretty good at that toon but I get sick of always "playing scared" as a glass cannon. So...
I switch over to my lvl 27 ice tank. Nothing can touch that guy, even without IOs, between the normal shields and EA. Not even fire attacks are that much of a problem, because a lot of fire attacks have an S/L component to them which gets deflected by the ice shield. And if anything does get through, I have hoarfrost at the ready. But... geez, things die awfully slow. I have to wail on a single LT forever just to make him die. And if there are multiple tanks/brutes already on the team, I don't have a whole lot to bring to the table. Weak damage, no buffs. Besides, that toon is on Victory and finding a group as a level 27 on Victory is like trying to win Powerball. So I switch toons...
I think my favorite toons are my merc/traps MM and my soldier. The MM brings a bit of everything to the table. The soldier can go from a melee machine to an AOE death-bringer with one visit to the trainer. So to the OP, you really should look at a jack of all trades (MM, soldier, maybe shade) and see if that will hold your interest in the long run.
maybe i'm tired of constantly finding fail powerset picks but i've probably deleted 20 different toons since i started maybe more all over just not satisfied with what i come up with. so atm my current idea was to try and come up with a good ranged for blue side and maybe a melee for red side just not sure of anything yet.
Make something silly. Completely ludicrous. A concept and a voice that are pure comedy. Don't delete them when you get tired of the clown, just let it gather dust. When things get too serious/boring you'll have your Grav/Storm goofball to come back to. (Energy blaster is also a good pick.) And leveling them won't matter because they aren't a serious character, aren't a serious build.
*snip* |
This. I'm actually IO'ing my FF/Energy Defender that is now coming up on the 40's, having teamed.... A handful of times. I spend more time throwing level 1 Hellions across Atlas Park than I do anything else. (Hint: Force Bubble can be used to push enemies past the police drones, thus bringing them in range of Teleport Foe from the roof of the City Hall, followed by a Power Push (six-slotted with Kinetic Crash, of course) that will propel them almost to Wentworths from said roof.

Well, I have what I'm told is one of the better warshade guides available, so I suggest you take a look at that. It'll help immensely with regards to play style. The link is in my signature.

Watch for one of the theme teams that comes up (not the iron eagles, though) and join in, or make one of your own. You'll have a reason to keep going, and since you'll be teamed, any slow spots will go faster.
Wanted: Origin centric story arcs.
If you've only played an AT once (one set combo) and "hate" it - don't give up. Roll a different combo. It may just be those sets not clicking for you.
Have you considered an Ill/Rad? I know that we get alot of grief for being a lil "overpowered", but it can be a ton of fun. Now with inherent fitness, you dont have to decide between a solo build and a team build, you can have both easily. You can team extremely well, bringing buffs, massive debuffs, controls, damage in the form of pets and a very decent single target attack chain (for a controller that is), a decent heal, and a rez. With minimal investment, you can have a very decent controller with several options that teams very well. With what some consider to be a more significant (it's not that bad compared to most scrapper or tank costs imo) expense, you can become a god and pimp slap Jack and Eochai at the same time while enjoying a nice bowl of Cheerios. Since you mentioned you like RP, there are several ways you could play that off. A buddy of mine rolls a technology Ill/Rad/Fire where he is a nuclear powered holographic android. It allows him the rationale to have 5 totally different forms for his costumes (all illusionary facades the droid puts on), generates illusions via Light and Gravity projections, Emits radiation from his core to debuff the enemy, and added flame projection modules to the body for attacks (fire mastery). Me personally I went with an Archmage theme, where the character was a lowly apprentice who could only manage two forms of magic when he started his career as a hero, Illusion and Entropy (my rationale for radiation, its entropy and decay, not radiation) and expanded his magical domains as he became more powerful. Now able to do Illusion, Entropy (Rad), Destruction (fire mastery), Portal magic (teleport pool), Time magic (speed pool for haste and lingering radiation for slow), Alteration magic (different forms from costumes) and Divine (my rad heal and rez). It plays off as a very powerful mage who is constantly putting himself out there to expand his knowledge fueled by remembering he was once a lowly apprentice who could only figure out two simple and not very effective forms of magic. I play that toon almost exclusively nowadays only alting for about 30 minutes before i get fed up and go back to my boy. On the plus side, if you go with Ill/Rad instead of say...I dunno...let's go with Warshade, you won't look like Grimace. Cuz that's gotta be embarrasing.
To be honest I've had altitis since day one. Only for me, I tire of them at lvl 20-25, again at about 32-35, and then again at around 43-47. I still only have 4 50's and I only ever use one of them but I have gotten much better than I used to be (took well over a year to get my first 50). As other people have said, don't delete your toons until you absolutely need the slot. Also, once I hit one of the humps I only use that toon for teaming. If I want to solo I have my vast army of alts.
What has kept me coming back to play comes from a couple different directions:
First, concepts keep me connected to a character, but they need to have a hint of flexibility. If the beginning concepts starts getting stale, adapt it in a way that brings interest rather than ditching them. If something isn't working, it's fun to work within the starting boundries and evolve it into something altogether new. This way you have the play experience to know how to approach things, what you like and don't, and can purposefully try something different through new costumes/powers/tactics.
Have some good multiplayer- I find that though the character creators and powers are fun, many actual experiences are quite limited. But playing with people adds a brand new element, especially if they don't play along one set tactic. Here having a variety of alts is nice, because different archetypes can change a team even with the same players. Also, meeting new people can be fun as you have to be a lot more flexible and aware of their strategies.
Be flexible, but find a strength you enjoy. This is a bit of a balance, but is totally possible. I love characters that has a broad range of tools. Mind control. Dark armor. Electric blast. Dark miasma. Sonic Attacks. While having many tools is great, it's also important to find your strength, and build around that. Having something you are REALLY good at, but still having other tools when that isn't working seems the key to really enjoying a character. Example: I have an archery/EM/concealment/medicine/munitions blast, built for range. She mainly kills masses of foes from sniper range- but she can help herself and friends recover, and can control/debuff problem targets as well. And go invisible to sneak. The specialty you have lets you do insane things that make you or your team say 'wow!' The others mean you always have something else in you back pocked when you need a diversion, or a plan B.
Have you ever tried playing a toon borne of a concept instead of "x AT, y Primary, and Z Secondary with g Epic?" I usually find that most of the toons i really enjoy playing now days are the ones that I have a concept behind (though I am still a heavy sufferer of Altism).
A couple of examples are:
Rocky Martin. A former music sensation and popstar that mysteriously transformed into living rock, complete with the ability to manipulate the earth. Earth/Earth dommy.
Tel'a Jhin Va...aka Thorn Dragon. Plant/Thorn dom. An ancient dragon that taught the druids nature magic, but was sealed inside a tree by the very people he taught and protected. Needless to say...he's pretty ticked at humanity in general.
Teek Freak (my newest project). Grav/Energy dom. Telekinetic, with energy assault as kinetic force blasts (which really isn't that far of a stretch). I tried a grav/energy dom a couple of years ago, and just could not seem to get into it all that much. Then i read a post from another forumer that had the concept of a TK toon using Grav/Psi dom. I kinda liked the idea, and kinda sorta ripped it off (sorry...it was a good idea! hehe), save for that i went with /energy which had more of a -kinetic feel. This time around...he's been a hoot, though i'm sure some of that has to do with the revamp doms had way back when (i think my first try at the combo was before the revamp).
I have several versions of my namesake character Raiken, with most of them having electric powers in one form or another. All except one...my DS/Thermal MM version of him...and plan on taking Scirocco patron for the electric part. Theme is that he got blasted by friendly fire with an experimental Longbow power nullifier, went apesh*t and ended up in the zig. He was taught to summon demons and the fires of his rage to get his revenge, and plans to see Scirocco in hopes that he can get at least a portion of his old powers back.
I've got several more, but i'll save you from my rambles...LOL.
I've got a friend that practically NEVER deletes toons...even the ones he never plays. I'll delete one every so often...but those are usually toons that never make it out of the low levels. Normally though...I'll play a toon for a while, then he may sit parked somewhere for a time while i'm frolicking in-game with somethin else, or a couple of something else's, then go back later. If it's something i never really liked to begin with...that's usually when i hit the delete key.
Edit:
I really should read a little more thoroughly. Right after finishing my post...i looked up at Seldom's post and what was one of the first things he said..."Concept" LOL.
RaikenX is currently seeking new quotes to add to his signature.
Someone say something funny.
That'll do, pig. That'll do.
Fixed my problem
I took my endurance sucking Warhade Rift-Dancer, Deleted it, took the really awesome story I created about her merging, and then (Cuz I kept getting eaten by Void Stalkers) said she got captured, and was removed by force from her host.
The Host then mutated because of the residual effects, but kept the costume and the name in honor of her dead symbiot.
Made her into a Grav/FF Troller and tinted all of her powers Purple tones, then added the toxic vapour aura to initiate on combat as to mimic her Warshade powers. Grav was a given. Then took Teleport to mimic the Warshades Teleport powers and this resulted in not only a cool story but thematicaly she fits the bill.
Now she hunts Void Stalkers with vengence because of what they did to her buddy.
And thats how I have corrected my issue. Plus thowing toilets at enemies is awesome, and frankly when pulling mobs using a couch or soiled mattress, it has come to my attention that gravity...is ammusing.
And I dont run out of endurance.
Issue solved...Im happy, shes happy, the costume is great and the RP fantastic.
Right now, I'm settling for pushing them (with Force Bubble) to the bottom of the stairs in front of Ms. Liberty and then using Power Push to hit the RP'ers standing under Atlas in the head. >.>
I'm mean like that.
I can't seem to get one AT to 30-40 before i delete it for whatever reason usually boredom
I have tried the veats, a corrupter. I think the only class I have not players is a Brute/Tank, because I just don't like the idea of it. Not so much my style.

Brutes do not play like Tankers.
You should try one, and be sure to play the minigame of "Chasing the Fury".
Ill admit this...It'sick but true. Tanks and brutes although enjoyable to play with are just not shiny enough. I dont expect people to get it, but there has to be some flash in the pan for me.
Plus...I suck at being a wall. I would be a group liability
tell me about it i suck at melee for the most part when it comes to grouping lol.
I'll give you that they're not "shiny" enough. I mean, they're pretty simple. Run into spawn, press 1 2 3 4 1 3 1 4 etc. "Squishy" ATs have to use at least a semblance of tactics. I really enjoy my warshade because of the razor's edge feel I get playing him. Do things right: I'm awesome. Do things not quite right: I'm dead.
But sometimes you just want to punch somebody in the face. There's joy to be found there.
Where to now?

Things that help me enjoy the toons I make...flashiness.
I LOVE Dual Pistols, but there isn't a Secondary (or a Primary in the case of Defenders) that I want to put with it, and Blasters don't feel comic book superhero to me at all (to squishie).
Scrappers I find is the AT that does the good mix of damage and survival for me (Brutes too, but when I solo I tend to afk a lot, sooo I hate rebuilding fury, even though it's so easy now). Currently I've just focused mainly on my lvl 50 DB/WP (with forays into Spines/Elec Scrapper and SS/FA Brute).
However, I'll likely rename then reroll my concept that I love (and fits into so many various powersets so it's easy enough for me to do...except Dark...*sigh*...DP/Dark I may enjoy) into a different Scrapper Combo, as while WP is awesome, it's also boring with no clickie outside of it's tier 9. :/
But since I love the game, I stick with it
BrandX Future Staff Fighter
The BrandX Collection
Not yet. I'm hoping once I get more slots into TP Foe for range, I will be able to. As it is now, I can't get them close enough to the globe (have to get them past the police drones without getting zapped) and get to the top of the globe and have TP Foe up again already before they run away, back out of range.
Right now, I'm settling for pushing them (with Force Bubble) to the bottom of the stairs in front of Ms. Liberty and then using Power Push to hit the RP'ers standing under Atlas in the head. >.> I'm mean like that. |
This is how I know you're looking at brutes the wrong way. They are not walls meant to protect the team. With the recent changes, a Brute doesn't even need aggro to keep fury; I have seen a brute maintain a "full" fury bar by attacking Rikti dummies (the ones that don't attack back). Brutes are NO DEFINE JUST SMASH STUFF!!!
I'll give you that they're not "shiny" enough. I mean, they're pretty simple. Run into spawn, press 1 2 3 4 1 3 1 4 etc. "Squishy" ATs have to use at least a semblance of tactics. I am enjoying my 3 toons at the moment. My Night Widow, my Grave Forcefield creation, and oddly enough my MM. The MM shocks me because I did try it out once before with Demon Summoning, but those demons are to big, and noisy. She has quiet zombies. I like the quiet zombies of quiet zombie goodness.
She aso has a really great story in place.
I have a scrapper. Sword and Board Scrapper. Shes level 8, and remains there. I think she has potential, but I just find that she is not my most interesting creation.
I tend to like some flash, but I will try a brute. Why not, I have tons of slots open, mind as well give it a go.
But truthfully I made batch of things to try different concepts.
I am enjoying the Warshade at the moment after the suggestion was made that I give them another shot. I am aslo enjoying my Shield and Sword Scrapper. Shes interesting. I like her and her story.
But I figured out my main issue. It seems it's endurance. I know? Wierd eh. But it seems that the less downtime I have the more I don't hate a character, however, that being said, all of my coolest creations all suck endurance like it's a ferret on pixy sticks.
So far My Widow, my Elec/Storm Corr and my Emp Defender don't seem to have these issues and game mechanics lead me to play them more, although, with the exception of my Widow, the others seem less facinating.
But being one part Rper and one part Hardcore Gamer, my issue actually stems from finding something that works effectively and that I can give a soul too.
So it's not just a matter of sets per say, its a matter of finding something that has lasting appeal, that eventually I can make into my comic book dream character.
I even went through my fave Characters from the Comix to inspire myself.
I love Spiderwoman (Both the original and the one now called Arachne), Psylocke, Zatanna, Dazzler (Old School Daz) and The Scarlet Witch. So Im trying to not copy, but those are definately my influences growing up with strong female characters, who kicked some butt, but had very interesting stories.
