Hey guys! I downloaded the Trial for this game and man is this game awesome I wish I would have starting playing sooner! So I have a couple of questions btw I came from DCUO for PS3 (uugghhhhh)

So I bought the thrity dollar going rouge complete collection on steam and have a couple of questions

When I create a character I'm going to be a hero btw where should I start out? Should I click City of Heroes or Planteria or whatever its called lol

And another thing do I get more costume options with this collection? Its fine if I don't I was just wondering.

Also I like to base my characters off of people not completly copy them. How close could I get to look like these guys?

Try both. There isn't a "wrong" place.

I believe that set includes a few costume items exclusive to it. Someone else will be along soon with more I'm sure.

Well it can depend on a number of factors of course, but I think you've got the spirit of it already.

It's not how many times you get knocked down that count. It's how many times you get up.

Welcome to the game and the boards.

Since you bought Going Rogue, your first character must be a Preatorian. However, your second and subsequent characters can start anywhere. So if you really want to start as a hero, roll a placeholder for Praetoria and then roll a hero.

As far as the copyright issues go, you do need to be careful. Just don't make an exact copy in name and appearance and you should be OK.

Make your characters too recognizable and they'll have their costumes removed by a GM.

If you want to be a HERO! you should stick to blue side, Paragon City. You will be limited to only hero archetypes - blaster, scrapper, tanker, controller and defender.

If you want to play a villain archetype (AT), with out being a villain, you can play in Praetoria (yellow side) and choose to enter Paragon City (and become a full hero) at level 20. The story/morality/choices in Praetoria are more grey than in Paragon City.

I think some extra costume options did come with the complete collection, but I would have to check the NCSoft store to make sure. More costume options can be purchased as downloaded packs from the same place.

Lookalike issues are handled via a petition system - if someone sees you in game and decides that your name/costume/bio are too close to an existing piece of intellectual property, they will send a petition to the GMs. A GM will look over your character and make a call. So you want to avoid getting so close to an existing character that the man on the street will say "Oh yes, that is a copy of XXX!" If a GM has to take a look at it, complaining that you used a different shaped belt buckle is not going to help you.

Altoholism isn't a problem, its a calling.

For a completely new player, I would suggest starting out as a Hero. Praetoria is a perfectly viable choice, yes, but its content is slightly more advanced in both complexity and difficulty than the original City of Heroes starting content.

The CoH stuff will get you started and teach you the basics of the game quite handily which you can then roll up another character in Praetoria to use that experience to the fullest.

With the GR Complete Collection, you did unlock the Alpha and Omega costume sets. They are available to you from the very start.

You can come pretty close to duplicating existing characters. I would advise against this though since the GMs frown upon it (and it has gotten the game into hot water in the past).

There were actually quite a few costumes included with Going Rogue - the Resistance, Overguard, PPD, Sport and Clockwork sets come with Going Rogue. The Complete Collection also includes the Alpha and Omega sets (which also come with auras.)

Welcome to the game and the forums! Always glad to see new folks come by! Check your sanity at the door, you won't be needing it here.

If I might make a recommendation, add a bookmark to ParagonWiki.com (aka wiki.cohtitan.com) - a very helpful resource for everything and anything there is to know about this game.

Also, don't be afraid to come on here with questions - there are plenty of folks willing to help.

Welcome to the game!

I want to throw out one bit of advice for something you didn't ask for. I wouldn't normally be pushy with advice, but I think this one can be a big deal for new players.

I don't know if you want to hook up with other players or mostly go it your own. If you want to do your own thing, this game is actually very friendly to that. However, if you want to team, there are a couple of things you should know.

  • Missions in the game happen in private instances that teams (or solo players) have to themselves. Very few objectives are out in the open world. That means you may not see many people running around. Don't despair, they're there, but they're just not where you can see them.
  • The Broadcast and Request chat channels only talk in the zone you're in. This means that looking for a team using them often isn't that useful, since most people may be in instances.
  • Once you pick a game server you want to try, check the part of the forums that's dedicated to each server. If you can't find a sticky post on it, ask in that forum what the popular Global Channels for that server are. Global Channels are chat channels that work across zones and actually even across servers. Most game servers usually have several channels that people use to chatter, form teams, etc. They are often good ways to both hook up with teams and meet people socially.
Good luck, and hope you enjoy your stay.

Welcome to the game, Michael.

I'd start in City of Heroes first, as that's the basis for the two expansions. As ZephyrWind says, make your first character a throw-away -- don't even make a costume or give him a name. Then make your second one a Hero and start in the tutorial.

READ everything in the tutorial. It will give you a solid basis for the entire rest of the game.

Important tips:

Servers are listed according to population. The ones with the most players are on the bottom. However, the last server you were on is always at the top, no matter how many people are on it. The three most-populated servers are Freedom, Virtue and Infinity, in that order. Virtue is the unofficial roleplaying server.

Good names are harder to get on more populated servers, but there are plenty to be had. Names like "Xx Superdude xX" are viewed with derision and often ridiculed in-game. If you really want a name like "Buzzsaw" but it's taken, try a variation like "Captain Buzzsaw" or "Commander Buzzsaw" or whatever.

Do NOT try to recreate a character from another game, movie, TV show, etc. That will get your character genericked, meaning your name will be deleted and replaced with something like "Generic Hero 000 302 6789" and your costume will be reset to the default plain one. You can make one that is inspired by another work, but it's better to come up with your own concept and go from there.

If you want help designing a costume, check out the "Costume Re-Design" thread in the "Screenshots and Fan Art" subforum.

The Hero archetypes (known informally as ATs):
Blasters are the hardest hitters, but they die easily. They are known as "glass cannons". Fire Blasters have the most powerful attacks, while Dual Pistols are the weakest.
Defenders are the weakest when it comes to attacks and soloing but are often unstoppable in a group.
Tankers are the hardest to kill, generally speaking, but they have fairly low damage output. Fire Tanks and Dark Tanks *do* have some decent damage output, however.
Scrappers -- especially Scrappers who have Willpower as their secondary -- are the easiest to play for a new player such as yourself. They have defenses almost as good as Tanks and attacks nearly as powerful as Blasters.
Controllers eventually become quite powerful, but it takes a very long time for that to happen. In the early stages of the game, they are pretty weak and can be frustrating to play.

ParagonWiki will answer other questions you might have.

it's Preto... Preato... Praetoria, but I agree that Planteria would have been simpler to spell lol

As ZephyrWind pointed out, by default the first character you'll create will be for Preto... Preato... AAARGH!! Planteria, but you can always go back to the Character Creation screen right away and create a 2nd character as a Hero, then a 3rd as a Villain, then...

Yep, Altitis is common in this game. And it's part of the fun too...

With Going Rogue, you should have all the default costume parts, plus the Alpha and Omega-themed costume sets. That's a truckload of costume parts...

But if you want more, there are 2 ways to get them:
  • Some costume parts are available as "Veteran Rewards", for exemple you get the Trenchcoats after 3 months.
  • If you can't wait that long you can buy Booster Packs from the NCSoft Store. Different Booster Packs have different costume parts, so you might want to look here first to plan which ones you want to buy.

As a few of us answered already: close, but not too close.

Several years ago, NCSoft got sued by Marvel because Marvel complained that this game would infringe on its intellectual properties. NCSoft won, but had to promise they would smack down on any possible infringements.

If someone (another player, most probably) see that your character looks too much like a copyrighted character, they are in their rights to fire off a petition to one of the GMs. If the GM reviewing this petition agrees that, yeah, "Captain A" looks a bit too much like Captain America, the GM will 1) change the name of "Captain A" to something like "GENERICIZED123245635", and 2) change "Captain A"'s costume to a totally random one (try to hit the "Random" button in the Character Creator screen to see the effect - oh, the horror, the horror!)

No problem, typing this from work as well...

On a side note: you may have noticed the links I used all pointed out to this nifty website called "Paragon Wiki". This is another very good place to get factual information about this game.

Also, once you're in game, you might want to join the "N P C" Global Channel - it' part of the Mentor Project (see my sig) and it's a good place to ask questions and get a response right on the spot.

The command to join: /chan_join N P C (the spaces are necesssary).

I think those first two are generic enough that you'd be ok making pretty faithful copies of them as long as you don't give them a similar name. I have one character that looks a lot like the one in the second link you posted, and I don't even know who that is.

The third one is a little more distinctive, but nowhere near the generic bait a Sooperman or Wulfereen clone would be. Change the colors up a bit and I doubt you'd have any issues. Again, stay away from similar names though.

Also, the longer you're in the game and the more cool costumes you see on other player characters, the more apt you are to design something that is uniquely your own.

Welcome to the City!

If you get the bug for costuming, feel free to drop by the Screenshots & Fan Creations part of the boards and show off your new ideas or ask for creative assistance. See the stickied threads up on top of that forum for the appropriate (and very popular) threads.

It's got over 300 pages of totally amazing costumes dating back to 2007.
The majority of the costume parts ar eincldued int he agme, but there are also costume booster packs available for players tp purchase, which are based around specific themes - for example, the next booster pack to go on sale is the animal pack on Fenruarty 23rd - it includes parts to make animal avatars, like wolf, cat and bird heads, plus other costume parts, along with a running power somyou can travel on all fours, and some animal themed emotes.

Welcome to the game! That's pretty much exactly the way I felt when I started playing..

Looks like everyone else has addressed most of your questions, so I will limit myself to suggesting you check out the Mentor Project, which is listed in my signature. It's a totally volunteer effort by vet players that are there to assist and answer questions for new & returning players.

There is a global chat channel with mentors available pretty much 24 hours per day, every day.

Good luck!
