Fair enough. I'd concede to that. I've derailed this thread enough.

Probably not the ideal place to post this, but... I'm looking to upgrade my video card. I currently have a 9600 GT, and am having crashing issues. Any recommendations on a decent Ultra Mode card for around $200-250? I see GTX 460s for around 200, or are Radeon 6800s decent? So many options D:

yeah, not the best place, but we've already had a threadjack so far before the sticky.

I'll be honest. Right now, the only way I could tell you with a straight face to buy an Nvidia card is if you wanted the absolutely highest performance, period.

If you don't care about having the highest performance on the market, and you don't have $500 to spend, Nvidia really isn't a viable option. At pretty much every price point AMD cards have either more performance (RadeonHD 6900 and 6800 series), or similar performance with much lower power usage (5770 / 6700 series) and much less heat.

That being said, AMD's been tweaking the OpenGL driver for the 6000 series of cards, and those changes are wreaking merry havoc down the line-up of cards back to the 2000 series. I couldn't give you a date on when support will stabilize for the OpenGL driver.

Just my 2 inf I run Ultra Mode with this...

Windows Vista x64 Home Edition Service Pack 2 (build 6002)
Intel Core2 Duo T8100 2.10GHz x2 with 4.00 Gbyte; NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GS...

Crashes some times but I can count that on one hand within a month, the game is smooth (here comes the but) and I know I'm stuck for any kind of upgrade 'cause this is a mobile card...yes/no?

Just want to say that my Diamond Radeon HD 5830...is amazing! I had an HD 4200 and upgraded to a 5830 and the game is running like I want it to.

The only issue I have right now is that the tower gets a lil hot and I might need to find alternative cooling methods since the 600watt PSU is a monster. I havent had any issues with the machine running.

The HD 5830 can run Ultra Mode at the max and still run easily and smoothly. The only issue I am having is a slow start but its passible.

I dont have lag, I dont have the slow motion Baywatch sprint scenes...I'm in love!

je_saist: Been running some test setups trying to find the point where CPU matters. I never really had any issues about CPU speed until the incarnate trials started.

Wondering if a project on finding out where lag starts and what makes lag on 24 member BAFs minimal. For example, with AMD Athlon II 630 I am the last person to zone on Lambdas and nearly last on BAFs. (Well, hard to tell on BAFs other than Mother is about half done on her cutscene by the time I finish zoning. However, I appear last on the team list, suggesting I was the last to zone)

With an Intel 2500K I zone first on both trials. The biggest thing I noticed was no lag with the 5770/2500K but I get lots of lag with the 5770/630. When AMD's Bulldozer comes out in June, I hope to pick up a Phenom II chip cheap and do some OC'ing with it.

I run Ultra mode with Intel® Core™ i7-2630QM processor and NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 460M with 1.5GB GDDR5 discrete graphics memory.
All Ultra mode features are maxed, including ambient occlusion.

I have run BAF/Lambdas, various TFs for hours, spent time in Icon and as so far had no problem.

I am loving this new Qosimo gaming laptop.

I picked up a Phenom II 965 for $99 at Frys. Made all my LAG on BAFs and Lambdas go away.

According to cinebench 11.5 (64bit) going from an Athlon II 630 to a Phenom II 965 was a 49% increase in FPS. Raw CPU power gain was 27%. Tests were run using a Sapphire 5770 Vapor-X. I haven't even tried to OC the 965 yet Clearly, the 630 was holding my 5770 back.

If you are running an Athlon II this is a good upgrade if your MB can take the Phenom II chips.

Might there be anything in that list that you would suggest and be under $200USD? I have a 9800GT, which is on the approved list, and it crashes like a drunk redneck on performance settings in game. I can't tell if it's the card or this other crashing issue everyone is having.

Thanks FX! I got a GTX560 on the way...should have it here Thursday. I'll swap and post if there are any changes.

Well as an update- got the GTX560 but the monster needs like 6 molex power connected to it so I had to get a new power supply as well...tired of messing around so I got a Black Widow. Yeah...pay $300+ total to play a game...I'm crazy- but it works.

Just to put it out there: Has anyone noticed a performance shift when crossfiring cards?

I have 2 x 6950s in Crossfire on my main machine now. I was thinking I'll swap one out to another machine I'm in the process of building if CoX doesn't make use of the extra card, since the old machine won't be used for anything other than CoX and a bit of SC2.

Crossfire currently does not support the OpenGL 3.x targets used by City of Heroes.

All I can tell you is that OpenGL 3.x Crossfire support is on AMD's to-do list, but there isn't a date set.

Wait, no Geforce 300 series? I got a GT 310 and you went from 200 series to 400 ... Then again I´m not that into knowing which hardware is used for which kind of usage :X

The GT 310 is a re-brand of the GT 210.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250 is able to run Ultra Mode. At least, that's what I'm using and I have most of the settings one notch from being maxed out.

I seriously doubt that: http://www.techarp.com/showarticle.aspx?artno=98&pgno=3

The Mobility RadeonHD 4250 has a theoretical Megatexel / MegaPixel throughput of 2,000 M/T / 2,000 M/P; and it's best performing memory configuration has 8.53 GB/s.

The Mobility RadeonHD 2600, which I have on hand, has a theoretical Megatexel / MegaPixel throughput of 4,000 M/T / 2,000 M/P; and it came with a bandwidth configuration of 12.8 GB/s.

While I can't say how a RadeonHD 4250 would perform, I can tell you how the more powerful 2600 performs:

Even in a low resolution, in this case 1024 * 768, I would be hard pressed to describe these frame-rates as playable.

I'd show you a video if you wanted proof, but I can't run a video at the same time as the game. I get about 30 fps on average with 1366x768 screen resolution. Very playable and enjoyable.

Thanks for the info! I'll keep an eye on AMD's site. Fingers crossed they update it soon

Motherboard-------------Asus P5N32-SLI SE
2x Graphics cards--------XFX GeForce 7800
Power supply-------------Enermax 620w
CPU------------------------Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 Conroe
RAM------------------------4 gigs of 240-pin DDR2 SDRAM

Up until now, this set-up has run CoX fairly well, even with ultra mode on low settings. But now, one or the other of the two video cards is failing. It freezes solid intermittently and has also started to blink. I am seriously considering upgrading to an Asus 1gb, 256bit, GDDR5 GeForce GTX 560.

What I'm hoping to learn here, is whether or not this single card can replace the two currently there, without my performance taking a hit.

If you're getting the base model 560, that would be a "yeah". You'll see a huge boost in performance and ability to crank video quality.

If you're getting the un-neutered 560 Ti, that'd be an "Oh HELLZ YEAH!"

Essentially you're going from a high end setup that's 4 generations old to a high-midrange or high performance card of current generation. The colloquial term we use is "suck the doors off" the old setup.
