List of Graphics Cards Compatible with Ultra Mode

First off, let me say a hearty thank-you to Hyperstrike, for your informed and timely answer.

Based on your input and my own research, I have just now completed a PayPal transaction with Newegg, that will net me the aforementioned GeForce GTX 560!

Huzzah!!!

The fact that it's made by Asus will only serve to make it more compatible with the MB. The 'huge boost in performance and ability to crank video quality' are what sold me on the 'vanilla' base model. The Ti was a lil rich fo my blood (and pocket) at this juncture.

Guess it might be a regional thing, but I've always heard that colloquialism as 'blow the doors off.' Nevertheless, whether it's blowing or sucking... Here's hoping that when it gets here, the perverbial doors of my old rig will be completely sexed off.

Congrats.

Is that the 560? Or the 560 Ti?

Either of them are a step up. But the Ti is the more powerful option.

Uh. No. I wish it worked that way. Still, I don't foresee any major issues.

Okay so you didn't go Ti. Still, you'll going to see a nice "leg up" here.

Well, if you leave an area fast enough, you're creating a vacuum. Hence, "suck".

Oh. One last thing. 32-bit or 64-bit Windows? (Please say "64-bit")

Yeah, I'm on Windows 64-bit. And here are a few more specs to chew on.

RAMDAC---------------------400MHz
Max Resolution-------------2560x1600
DirectX-----------------------DirectX 11
OpenGL----------------------4.1
Effective Memory Clock----4200MHz
Memory Size----------------1GB
Memory Interface----------256bit
Memory Type---------------GDDR5
Core Clock-------------------850MHz
Shader Clock----------------1700MHz
Stream Processors----------336 cores

This compares favorably with the best rated GTX 560Ti on Newegg's site. The only differences being that the Ti has exactly 50 more stream processor cores. But it also costs exactly $50 more. So, what do you think? Maybe not so vanilla after all.

Well on paper (number of streaming processors, texture units, etc) the 560 is an overclocked (810/4008 Vs 675/3600) 1MB GTX 460 but uses a little bit less power.

The 560Ti is roughly 8-12% faster than the 560 (referencing techPowerUp's performance summary at 1920x1200 and 2560x1600).

Some 560's are overclocked to the point that their performance can catch up with the 560Ti.

Be that as it may. I was never too jazzed about overclocking. On paper, the Asus flavor, of the GeForce GTX 560 seems to have the proper specs to give me all the bang I need, for the bucks I'm laying out. I will let y'all know bout the reality when it gets here. (he said rubbing his hands together eagerly)

I'm using the term overclock simply to compare the clock speeds of the 460 and 560.

When the GTX 460 came out, people found that you could actually overclock the card by, at the time, insane amounts. And when AMD came out with the HD 6850 at the same price point at the time, nVidia endorsed overclocking the GTX 460 up to 800MHz.

Now while the GPU in the 560 is a similar configuration (SPs, texture units, raster units) to the 460, it isn't the same chip and it's default speed is now 810MHz and uses faster memory. Of course that doesn't prevent manufactures from offering a GTX 560 running over 900MHz.

I don't know a lot in the way of computer parts, I'm one of those that knows enough to get by...

I was reading about how the 9800 GT is essentially a gateway video card into the Ultra Mode?

I don't understand this considering I am currently running the game with maxxed out Ultra.

I have an Nvidia GeForce 9800 GT with 1gb of ram, 6gbs of ddr2 ram, an AMD Athlon 64 x2 Dual Core Processor 5000+ 2.60GHz, and 64-bit Windows 7 Ultimate..

I stumbled upon this forum looking for a solution to my constant screen flickering problem, but I'm not seeing it here..

The game runs absolutely great with everything maxxed other then two noticeable problems:
1) When I first began to run it I would crash due to what appeared to be adding more... to the screen?
It would happen randomly upon /info'ing someone.
That's the only time that I can recall it would happen, hasn't happened in a while.

2) I've recently run into constant screen flickering, it ONLY happens when moving.
I was looking for a solution to this problem and others seem to just be getting screen flickering, mine only happens while moving.. It can make it difficulty to fix considering I can't completely reproduce it..
It will only happen when I move, but sometimes it goes away for a little bit causing me to think I fixed it when I didn't -_-

Anyways:
Is there something wrong that I don't know about with the 9800 GT?
Hard to believe I'm the only one that can run everything on Ultra with it....

AMD E series processor? Um no, cheap laptop != game machine.

The E Brazos series is good for mobile use of viewing/editing excel and webrowsing.

Will it play CoH? Not at a level I would consider acceptable on minimal graphics. At best it would be good for marketeering, doorsitting in AE, and soloing.

And sorry, its not going to play ultra mode. Its going to struggle with normal mode.

You might have better luck with the A series with the quad core A8 Llano.

I'm running on a Macbook Pro laptop with an Radeon HD 6750M/512 MB on OSX.

I can run the game at ~30 fps with all Ultra settings on maximum, except Ambient Occlusion, that's on Balanced. With Occulation maxed out, the fps drops to ~20, which becomes noticeable.

Overall the game runs well on OSX, my old 2007 Macbook Pro with the 8600GT/128MB can't really run Ultra, but does run the game well at slightly below that.

The Ambient Occlusion settings are very GPU intensive. Many people report a framerate drop with them enabled and especially at higher settings.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

Black Pebble is my new hero.

I just wanted to make clear to any possible Mac owners what they could expect on a recent Mac. Fortunately this game does have a Mac client, unlike some of the competition.

I just wanted to make sure that any prospective Mac players would know that my configuration basically can play the game at (near) max. settings and make it look good. No need for a Windows Bootcamp install.

I like your signature by the way.

I think it would be pretty safe to add the 7970 to this list :-)

Just built a new rig with 2x GTX 580s. With SLI enabled, at native (2560x1440) I was getting a gruesome 10 fps. Just for the heck of it, I set the city of heroes setting in the nvidia profiles to "force single-gpu" and went to 35-40 fps. This is with ultra, 8xFSAA, and details set to 200%/200%. Same settings with SLI on (using default which is force alternate frame rendering 2, or the force alternate frame rendering 1), both produce ~9-10 fps.

Can anyone tell me whether the nvidia geforce gt 520m card is compatible with CoH? I don't need to run in ultra-mode but I'd like to. Hoping to return to CoH after an absence of a few years - but first I'll need a new laptop (desktop is just not in the cards). A couple of off-the-shelf options have the nvidia GeForce gt 520m card. I did not see that on the list that started this post, but the card looks like it was released after that thread was posted.

Any advice would be appreciated - thanks!

Posted

The 520 is a very entry-level card.

It'll run the game. But I'd stay way the hell away from any ultra mode effects.

Unfortunately the game is in no way optimized for SLI at all.

So I'm not surprised at what you saw.

If you're building a machine primarily for CoH, just get the single fastest card you can. SLI is a waste of money.

If you're building SLI with other games in mind, just resign yourself to the fact that CoH is only going to use one card.

  • 8GB RAM (4GB x2, the one you spec'ed likely has a cheaper 2x4 config, meaning future memory upgrades are going to be more expensive)
  • GTX 560Ti 2GB card (Superbowl deal)
  • 1TB HD
  • Win7 Home
$1041

Yes, the price is a little higher.
In my not-so-humble opinion, it's worth a $42 premium.

Thanks for the response Hyperstrike...I settled on a 1gb Geforce 540m...and I'm happy to report that I can run ultra mode using the card, but only if I don't have any other demanding apps running in the background. If I do, the frame rate turns to garbage. But I had it set all the way to ultra mode otherwise and have had no problems. At least, I not up to this point - I've done a few hours of gaming, but no teams - couple of momentary freezes, but then things pick up again - so far, so good.

I like other games That said, I'm perfectly happy with the 1x 580 performance... but the default setting by nvidia for coh now sets SLI, so you have to know to actively go force it to do single card renders, or get half the performance. (Until I found that, I was a very unhappy camper.)
