And I really mean it this time. Cyclone Yasi is about to hit our coast...in about five hours, local time. And when I say it's a monster, it is genuinely no understatement. We are deeply fortnuate it's not hitting the southeast of the state in which I live, but I still have grave fears for a lot of people.

To give you a sense of the scale....

That's what Yasi would do to the US and other places. And we still have at least a month and three more probable cyclones to go....

Yup. Yasi is one of the largest storms to ever make landfall in modern history. Been watching this one from afar.

Godspeed to all you northern Queenslanders.

Oh man, hang in there Aussies!

Also, why are they called cyclones in the Pacific, but hurricanes in the Atlantic?

So you know what part of the world the storm is in. Hurricanes are always in the Atlantic, heading toward North America, and Cyclones are always in the Pacific or Indian Oceans.

Otherwise they're the same.

Just to update everyone...

The cyclone made landfall at about midnight last night Australian time and literally in the last hour it shifted south and went between two major towns, sparing the larger from damage. However, there's been horrendous damage to the banana plantations (my state provides the majority of the country with banana crops and is a several hundred million dollar a year industry) and to the sugar plantations as well.

On the good side, because of all the advance warning and predictions, not one single life was lost. In fact, three babies were born during the night.

However...the cyclone is of such intensity, despite it being downgraded to a Category One, it's gone 250 miles inland and is threatening a mining town. Then of course we'll have to deal with all the associated rain....and we still have three more probable cyclones and two months of this particular weather system that's brought this down on us.

We're not out of the woods yet...though I am stealing that Courage Wolf. That made me laugh.

Fortunately, I am totally out of the zone where the cyclone struck and don't have to worry, though I was making do a little while ago (only two weeks, it feels like forever) when my home city here of Brisbane flooded.

Living on an island continent where we get cylones on our west, north and east coasts, I can assure you we're more than familiar with this routine. It's just that this one was unprecedented.

Now it's become a massive tropical depression which is raining all the way into the middle of the country. Some of you may've seen the Oprah thing where she visited Uluru? That local area is going to be flooded....

I'm so lucky i live in South Australia but hey, us aussies are tough nuts, some guys I know up there spent their time riding out the storm in place none other than the pub! they helped board up the place so they got drinks on the house! That's how we roll!

I dare say next year it's our turn to cop mother nature tho, now that the Murray river is flowing at absolute max capacity, another rain event, even if enough of the remnants of Yasi reach us, it could flood... Ahh well, better find a pub to start sandbagging

My anal-retentive math-centric bother crunched the numbers and says those pictures aren't quite accurate. Still, it's gigantic and scary nonetheless.

On a similar subject, here's the Storm of the Century from 1993. I remember this one vividly; it was quite a doozy.

Wishing you guys luck yet again again with those monsoons that followed the cyclone. Saw that Toowoomba is back in the drink.

Oh and luck to Sri Lanka... and South Africa... and New Zealand. 4% more moisture sucks.
