Crashing Often? Please post to this thread...

Manga: which suggestions should I try, any specific one? A couple didn't seem related to my issue.

Update, for what it's worth:
First off, the weird issue I was having with vehicles/buildings/etc stacking at my toon's location was resolved by turning environment reflections off. I was bummed cuz I dug that new (to me) 'ultra mode' setting but worth it for the craziness to cease.

While it's annoying as hell, for my sanity I've now resigned myself to the following pattern every single time I go to log in: delete preferences folder; log in using file verify & safe mode; make changes to my settings while in safe mode; quit & reload in normal mode; go through resetting all my window locations/etc; GAME.

It's annoying but tolerable for a short period of time. The only thing that sucks is by doing that I have no control over the water effects settings, but for whatever reason I'd swear the game is running smoother than before. And that's my story.

*edit: I should note, I run almost all settings at high, with the exception of no shadows and usually only medium water effects settings.*

And since I'd forgotten to mention before: I've got a 2-yr old 24" mac, intel core 2 duo, 2.66ghz, 4gb memory, 1.07 bus speed, nvidia geforce 9400.

From my (edited) Troubleshooting Guide:

Q. I’m getting corrupted graphics in-game, and it causes frequent crashes.

A. Some versions of City of Heroes for Mac are not patching to the correct version. Try the following if you suspect this problem:

Download the City of Heroes client from your NCSoft Account page and check to see if it has the same issue.

*make sure you check safe mode the first time you run it and change your graphics settings there or it will just give you the black screen. If you forget to, then just delete your preference file again and launch it again in safe mode.*

Yeah I'm crashing quite a bit. Getting either assertion error, screen goes black and I have to hard shut down the comp to resolve, or quitting the program does not really close it and I have to force shut it down. However, the black screen and the assertion errors are the most prevalent and have increased a great deal recently.

Here is a quick solution to get out of the game if the System Hangs up and you are unable to do anything

press

CMD+ALT+ESC
the above is the equivalent to Ctrl+alt+del. And everytime i press it the game quits no matter what.

Secondly have any of you had a small problem with the Graphics of the Game ? Like the game is very patchy and stuff ?

Two types:
-A crash with a window saying "Assertion Failure" and it happens more in heavy lag areas but also happens in low lag areas occasionally
-When I go into a loading screen or log out to character select the game just freezes and I have to force quit, happens frequently

Unfortunately, that doesn't work on the crashes I get. If I talk to an NPC, any NPC except for a store, if I open my contacts or tips windows, etc. the game hangs. At that point nothing works except power off. Even CMD+ALT+ESC.

I am getting alot of asseertion failures. They at times my keyboard controls get screwy, I cannot control movements and then I crash.

Here's my configuration:

  • Mac Pro 1,1 w/ dual 2-core 2.66Ghz Xeon procs (4MB L2 cache)
  • 10GB RAM DDR2 667Mhz RAM
  • ATI Radeon 5770 1GB
  • Razer Naga Mouse using driver 2.0
  • Razer n52te using driver 1.0.2
  • OS X 10.6.6
  • dual 20in apple cinema displays (1680x1050)
  • 3 1TB drives in RAID 0 array (yes, I know this is insane)

Like some others, I too have the issue where CoH will quit silently. In rare cases I'll even get an assertion error.

The only mode I can reliably run in is performance mode; if I run in ultra mode, I'll get about 15 minutes of game play before it quits.

As an interesting aside, if I switch to windowed mode, then back to full screen, all I get is a white screen until I restart the client.

Thus far I've tried the following to resolve the problem:
1. Reset my prefs by renaming ~/Library/Preferences/City\ of\ Heroes
2. Ran in Safe Mode
3. Restarted
4. Ran fix disk permissions
5. Ran fsck -fw from single user mode
6. Reinstalled CoH from the lastest installer

What I still need to try:
1. Run the 10.6.7 update
2. Disable spaces

Might be too early to say, but I THINK my lockup issue has been resolved.

I'll do some more testing but at least for now it appears that talking to NPCs is safe again.

I am crashing often but I notice that its in the new warehouse tileset maps and inside the Rikti War Zone base map (whether its a mission using this tileset or the actual RWZ - I very often crash in these), and Pocket D. Its very frustrating as RWZ, Pocket D and the warehouse maps are becoming increasingly common destinations for end-game content.

UPDATE: my apologies folks, I don't make it to the forums as often as I should, and RL has been a pain lately.

That, and my minimal spare time has been spent in CoH!

So with that said, I'm pleased to report that since the last big update released, the game's been running great and I no longer have to do all the safe mode efforts to get set up. I just log in, and start gaming! Things started working normally again when i20 came out, and I had no issues switching to the new Mac updater, FYI. It's worked great for me.

Just wanted to provide that update, and say thanks however I can to the folks that have helped us (CuppaManga in particular, for the efforts here). It was really nice to see the effort made to help us Mac users out. Now, the only issue I'm having is inconsistency on whether I have dialogue show during cut scenes (usually no). But I can live with that just fine.

I call it the black flash screen of death like 98% of the time doing arachnos lab maps, going through RWZ base / mothership raids, mainly with a ton of people. I keep graphics on min cause of this. It also does it 1/2 between the 3rd raider and 4th raider in lady gray and end up having to stop or I get disconnected, and the assertion errors and that one with the updater I just got today.

Keeps freezing when I enter store or talk to the chick to get a badge to move on which sends me to the store also I guess at the end of the tutorial for CoH Freedom.

Hey guys-- thanks so much to all of y'all who spend your time helping out those less technologically-inclined. When I try to run CoH on my Mac, the client won't even launch; the icon appears on my task bar, bounces once and disappears as "City of Heroes quit unexpectedly." is displayed. Wineserver is not running. The problem appeared just after I restarted my computer and is now persisting through multiple restarts.

These are my stats-- fairly new MacBook Pro 15", 8gb RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M/256MB VRAM. My hardware seems to be up to snuff running the program, so I'm guessing it's a software conflict of some kind. Thanks in advance, looking forward to getting back to Galaxy City!

Assertion Failure (Have had six in less than twelve hours, usually while on a mission map or in a base - including 2 since my last full power-down and rest reboot)
Have also had:
3 crashes during loading screens (no idea what causes those, as I got no message, just a CTD)
1 PIGG corruption message (Make that 2 pigg corruptions. The newest one was Worldmisc.pigg)
1 game frozen so badly I had to reboot the computer to exit the game
2 Mapserver disconnects

And this is all within the last twelve hours.

Macbook Pro 3.1 17"
2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
2GB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM
GeForce 8600M GT
256 MB Video RAM
Snow Leopard 10.6.8

Update: Am currently running a full file check, so far the validator claims 0 bad files, but will try again after doing the file check and see if it's fixed the crashes.

New Update: Ran full file check, validator claimed 0 bad files, problem not resolved. But, since tomorrow is the VIP launch, hopefully the updated version will be in better shape. Assuming, of course, that the launcher ever connects to the correct address to self-update, and/or Cuppa's manual update instructions work.

I updated the NCLauncher on my MacBook Pro tonight. It says it will not work with this (older) version of Mac OS X, even though I am within the current listed minimums for requirements. Admittedly, I am running 10.5.8 but it's been doing just fine.

I will attempt to upgrade my OS, darn it. But still, a little warning would be nice. I cannot locate an older version of NCLauncher to use.. darn it.

Crashing TONS.. I am probably crashing 2 to 3x per hour. Sometimes back to back..

I followed the video settings and even lowered the graphics even more.

I reset my router for the sake of doing it.

I am running on a mac all in one 27 inch, 4 gig of ram, 1 TB drive ( not that it matters much ) OS 10.6. The machine really has nothing on it beyond COH at the time. Its strickly a web surfing machine. I don't mess around with the config or anything of the sort. I have other machines I use to mess around with if I was going to experiment coding with or installing audrino software per say.

I even went as far as installing another MMO just to see if it was my machine. I played it for hours with no issues..
I came back to COH and crash, crash, crash.

Anyone else having issues.

What I found helpful so far from the forums is tuning off a geometry buffer in advanced graphics quality settings you enable them and then you can tweak different aspects of graphics like world or character settings individually. It helps a lot with lag and stuff

It did. It reduced my lag to the point where I can actually cross a room without crashing. Not so much help during combat or zone events. I'm almost at the point of relegating this machine to RP only, and waiting to do anything that would bring me XP until I can get back on my desktop PC.

The other thing that helps is keeping the graphics to min w/o the geometry buffer but I've been lucky on my MacBook ( white plastic case one not metal) with the geometry buffer off and having the world textue and character texture quality at medium and 100% on world detail w/o much lag. But usually have to lower it when it comes to tfs and missions.

What confuses my wife and I is that she doesn't have NEARLY the trouble I am, even though we're both sharing the same computer (stats listed up-thread), I actually have my graphic settings reduced farther than she does, and she uses Zoom in order to be able to see the screen clearly enough to play.

That sounds like the machine I have (bought in fall 2010). For me, the crashes are due to memory. I had enough, but CoH would crash whenever it used more than around 2.2 Gb of memory (not the magic 2G limit, some other number that varies between 2.1 Gb and I think I've seen as high as nearly 2.5 Gb). Note that more memory in the iMac isn't going to help with this problem.

The solution I use: run in windowed mode. Keep "Activity Viewer" (found in Applications > Utilities) open where you can see CoH's memory use while you're playing. Whenever memory use is around 2 G, in game, use the "/reloadgfx" or "/unloadgfx" command (not sure the difference, both seem to work). The memory use will drop. Unfortunately, it won't drop all the way down; you'll slowly accumulate unfreeable memory.

For old zones (e.g., blueside except for new Atlas, most instance maps), I can run for hours without an issue. For Praetoria or any new maps, I may have to reload every ten minutes. Flying over a new zone eats up memory fast (lost of graphics being loaded). In iTrials, it's the worst. I will end up restarting after two, maybe three trials if I'm lucky.

Last tips: For convenience, I created a macro to put a button in my tray: /macro rld reloadgfx. Also, if I need to reloadgfx, if possible, I wait until I enter an instance. Usually the memory drop is greater there, presumably due to less intensive graphics.

I went to the 20.5 update sticky and followed those settings. So I have geometry buffer off. I have shadows on low. Particle set to 3k from 5k. I turned down world graphic.

Its annoying when your at the end of a incarnate trial and crash loosing out on the reward. Sadly and unfortunately it must have happened about 3 or 4 times so far. I reported it, but they said there is nothing they can do.
