Redundant mission maps are redundant.
Glowies and enemies are supposed to show on the map after most (90%?) of the enemies are gone. If you clear most/all the enemies on a map and no objectives show up (either as red arrows or splats) /bug it.
Anyway - glad you're enjoying the game
Orc&Pie No.53230 There is an orc, and somehow, he got a pie. And you are hungry.

Negaduck: I see you found the crumb. I knew you'd never notice the huge flag.
also, hitting 'm' opens the map, which gives you a rough layout of areas, and will display objections that are close to completion (like Rajani said)
My girlfriend, who plays about once a blue moon, has actually moved her map to the corner of the screen, and always has it open, so she knows exactly where she is at all times. Something like that may help you out as well.
I can't even tell you how many times I've been playing a mission, defeated all of the enemies in the map, and been completely lost looking for a glowie to click for way too long, because all tunnels/hallways/rooms in every map look EXACTLY the same. It gets to the point where I can't tell if I'm at the end of a map, or if I'm back where I started.

To the OP.
There are a few set patterns that maps are made up of. Over the course of time I've simply memorized them all. Theirs only so many ways the map parts fit together.
If you want you can also go to MA and look up all the maps and take a look if you want. Keep in mind all the cool ones are in story arks.
Even if you don't want to do that there only so many places that spawn glowey's on maps. Agin go to MA and play around with the mission objectives you'll get a feel for where things spawn in no time.
Before I dive too far into the subject matter, let me preface--
I'm in my second month of the game (after trial) and I must say that COH/COV is the best game I have played in as long as I remember, so I don't mean to be taking a slight at developers/community/etc. That being said, I must get this out of my system... It's very frustrating, because I feel like I'm wasting time roaming around over and over, just to click on something. Perhaps there should be radars in mission maps that lead you towards glowies, because quite honestly I am paying money by the month to play this game. If every section of the mission maps are going to resemble the last section, I will end up wasting time over something totally frivolous when I could be working on leveling up elsewhere. I don't plan on ending game play because of it, because I'm far too absorbed already. This is my only qualm, and it doesn't detract from how wonderful the game is overall.. Just had to get this out of my system. |

1) 3 level cave of doom
2) City map (the one with the multi story car park) of doom
3) Multi-level building maps with all those tiny rooms (of doom)
4) Council/5th Column hideouts with all the tiny rooms, and several 3-level areas... of doom.
Doesn't help as much as you think, especially in these 4 map types, and especially if you're stealthing mishes (meaning you don't get those "nearly cleared map" hints):
1) 3 level cave of doom 2) City map (the one with the multi story car park) of doom 3) Multi-level building maps with all those tiny rooms (of doom) 4) Council/5th Column hideouts with all the tiny rooms, and several 3-level areas... of doom. |
1) Yes your right but 9 times out of 10 the boss spawns in that room any way always a /em head + desk moment.
2) Not quite true I've done the drop off outbreak mission for the Radio(oooooo! Free Opportunity!) so many times I know where to look more or less.
3) I know most of those by heart and there are a few rooms that (almost) never have glowy's in them.
4) I'll give you the pool room's they are a pain. Other than that the beginning, middle, and end spawn points are rather static/out in the open.
All I'm saying is that experience is the best teacher. And that the spawn points CAN be predicted. I would also recommend the OP play some of the new arks in Sharkhead, some fun missions there.

Samuel_Tow is the only poster that makes me want to punch him in the head more often when I'm agreeing with him than when I'm disagreeing with him.

You could try CohRadar. I've never used it but I did use Blinkie Finder along, long time ago.
I have all the spawn points memorized, so I don't need it. I also know which nooks and crannies don't have spawn points in them. Being new you're going to be running down stairs and looking in offices that we vets know hostages and glowies are never located.
Glowies also hum so make sure your sound is on. When I first started playing I didn't realise this cos my laptop speakers don't generate this noise and it wasn't untill I put headphones in one day I discovered it.

Another fun tip is if you know what the object is supposed to be named, you can create a targeting macro for it.
Let's Dance!
Honestly from the wording of the original post it sounds like Twoheadedboy doesn't know about the mini map.
So thb. Either do like Arbegla said and hit m to open your mini map or else click on the word "map" at the bottom of your compass.
Don't count your weasels before they pop dink!
And here you go!
You can change the sounds for the Glowies to something you LIKE - a song cli[p or something - http://strategywiki.org/wiki/City_of_Heroes/Clientmods
You can replace any sound effect in the game with one of your own choosing. The primary reason for this is to silence annoying looping sound effects like Targeting Drone or Super Speed. First, if you wish to silence a sound effect, you'll need to download or create an .OGG file that contains several seconds of silence. You cannot just create an empty .OGG file because City of Heroes handles it poorly. To replace a sound with another, follow the same steps, except use your replacement sound in .OGG format instead of silence. Second, you need to know what to name the file and where to place it. Below is a list of known powers and their locations. To silence/replace a particular sound effect, put your .OGG file in the given directory and rename it to the filename given. If these directories do not exist on your computer, you will have to create them. If you don't like the change you made, just delete the newly saved .OGG file and you are back to standard. For changes to take effect, you will have to restart your CoH client if the game was running while you added, changed, or deleted the .OGG files. |
Arc #40529 : The Furies of the Earth
Wow, so many replies.. I sort of spaced this thread out for a minute. Thanks for all the suggestions, guys. I was aware of the map but whenever I went to use it, I was frustrated by the blackness within missions and figured it just meant it was useless unless I was in a main area. Coincidentally, when I was playing today I noticed that the blankness filled in as I progressed through the map, but I still haven't noticed any glowies showing up on it.
Using headphones seems like it might help because I never noticed the humming. An unrelated problem I had today: I was doing a mission in Sharkhead (Can't remember who it was for, but the story was something along the lines of.. I finished getting a blood coral, and I had to go to speak to something or other in order to learn 'the true source of power(?)' and then destroy the coral.
The problem: The mission lagged like hell... To the point where when I took a step, it wouldn't register for several moments. I would hit a power, and it would make the sound but there would be no change in my screen. I am running on a netbook with 1 gb ram so I generally get a bit of lag, but I've updated allmy drivers/defragged and I always run in safe mode. The game is usually very playable, I generally only see a really bad lag in heavily populated areas, and even then it's not as bad as this mission was. Missions never give me any problems. I even re-booted, then tried to run the mission again with the same result.
I seem to remember some people reporting improvements by turning down some graphics options. I'll see if I can find the thread where it was mentioned. I would also /bug it in game, and maybe by PM, because there does seem to be something screwy with the map, and the more people who register that they're having an issue with it the better the prospect of getting someone to take a look at it.
ETA: I found the old thread, but sadly no one had any solutions for the problem.
