They're meant to be for fun.

I see them as just a costume part/aura.

They serve the same purpose as Capes, Auras, Titles, Emotes, and Base Decorations. They are just for fun. If you can't figure out how to have fun with them then don't use them.

Well, the Monkey and Redcap are good for startling people.

Just find a zone where creature would be found and then after summoning it fly over a person or group who is just standing around where they obviously think it's safe. I personally like the Redcap at Annah because a lot of lower level types go there to get the extra costume slot. It's even better if you can get a few friends to join in so you have a whole group of Redcaps that can't be targeted charge up.

Yes I'm sadistic.

I got plenty of functionality out of the Mekman watching the teammate freak out over the untargettable NPC attacking him

Orc&Pie No.53230 There is an orc, and somehow, he got a pie. And you are hungry.

I havent noticed, but do the pets do any animations on their own? like attacking (for 0 damage, like snowballs) or anything? Or do they just kinda stand there and look pretty?

Just the latter, though I have to say that the former would be a lot of fun.

The Clockwork pet will spontaneously do animations if you stand around long enough. Maybe the Mekman too, I don't remember. I'm pretty sure the others don't though. No attack/snowball animations.

I think the Mekman taps it's feet impatiently if you stand around too long, like at the market. It might also "cheer" while you fight but I'm paying more attention to the things I'm trying to hit than look at my pet.

They aren't meant to be combat pets, in fact it says so right in their description (Non-Combat Pet)

The devs don't seem to like giving veteran players an unfair advantage over non-vets, so all the vet rewards have downsides. The vet attacks for example: Yes, they hit fairly hard, but they also cost a lot of endurance, and can't be slotted for accuracy or end reduction. So if a vet is using those attacks a lot, they are going to run out of end sooner than someone who is not.

The Buff Pets? Yeah, I've seen tissue paper more durable than those things. They give you a tiny buff, and they die if anything looks at them sideways.

The ability to take travel powers at level 6 is nice, but most of the prerequisites are useful in their own right. Combat Jumping, Hover, Hasten, and Recall Friend are all useful powers that most people I've talked to don't skip anyway. Add Ninja Run and the ease of acquiring temp travel powers into it and you have a vet reward that is a lot less useful than it sounds (I have that one, and I haven't taken advantage of it yet)

I suppose the map reveal power is useful, but it doesn't really give any kind of significant advantage.

The point of Vet Rewards is to give players a cool little thank you gift, without making it unfair to the players that don't have them. So far I think they've done a good job in that.

I use it a fair amount, but even when I do, I usually end up taking the pre-requisite 1 or 2 power choices later anyway
