Jet Packs FTW!
Patience is a virtue.
Not everyone is that virtuous.
When the invention system first came out and the Rocket-boot recipe was available, the animation of the boots, when the fly power was active, didn't mesh with location of the boots themselves, except for the default size scale. The more extreme the size was from the middle, the farther off the animations were. That might be part of the problem with backpack style rockets.
Just a guess though.
Not everyone is that virtuous.

One of the reasons current temp power jet packs embed themselves in the backs of Huge characters and hover off the backs of Female characters is that they're power effects no different from Fire Sword or Stone Fists. It's the same problem that weapons used to have back when they had to have only one look and size and location that fit all models and sizes. This is because power effects can't really interact with the costume system, so they HAVE to be a one-size-fits-all.
If jet packs are made into costume details and actually put on an attachment point, they should be able to follow the back of the character much more closely. David mentioned there being a technical issue with them, but never specified what it was. Whatever that issue is, it can't be that. |
Just a guess though.
There I was between a rock and a hard place. Then I thought, "What am I doing on this side of the rock?"

And ACME spring loaded shoes too. Don't forget those.
Jetpack costume recipes are what I would like to see. Costume recipes are a wonderful way of adding flexibility to what after 6 years have become boring travel powers.
Just like wings we could have a variety of recipes to choose from Jetpacks Hover Discs Flying Carpets Broomsticks Helicopter Backpacks Flying Boards Roller Blades Skate Boards Pogo Stick (I'm spitballing for SJ) Unicycle |

You must be referring to... well, I'm not sure, actually. The chest pieces and big gloves, maybe? Because the Resistance boots and pants as well the PPD pants would work fine on Natural characters.
Backpacks and sheaths/scabbards would help out and do a lot for the natural crowd. The last seventy jillion* costume pieces have all been tech in theme. I was pretty disappointed that my regular natural characters pretty much couldn't wear a single costume part that came with GR.

Resistance, PPD, Clockwork, and Overguard were pretty much all tech themed. I got a little use out of Sport (on a sports outfit, of all things) but that's about it.

I actually spent 5 minutes wondering if I should put those on my list. Finally decided not to because it was too cartooney.

That was suggested on behalf of a duo of AR/Traps Corruptors, of which one is mine:
Now that fitness in inherent, they can take a travel power, and it was determined that Super Jump would be best for them.
Or the ACME brand rocket skates. Just keep an eye out for oncoming trucks, telephone poles and sheer cliffs. These would be awesome to use on the ski slopes.

Jet packs would be good for any mini giant robot toons. :P

The jet pack temps are great, but ever since they came out I've wanted a fly pack that was a costume item and works with normal flight.
I've mentioned it before, but the Art Team's been looking into the possibility of backpacks. We definitely want to make some for you, but all I can say for now is "stay tuned..."

Next wish; more extreme size options. A lot smaller - down to Pixie size. And somewhat larger - the character still needs to fit in rooms and not completely block vision for others. Size options might best fit in a paid for costume expansion set - I don't want half of Paragon's population to be Pixie-sized.
Of course, this also goes with oversize weapons!
If your thinking of backpacks - can I make a mutant themed suggestion.
A backpack thats some sort of symbiot back lump/hunch - no gameplay effect but interesting for role play (maybe looking like a woodlouse or squid)
Just a thought - don't know if its already been suggested

Bigger and smaller bodies would potentially break the bounding boxes. This is why stuff like Rularuu himself and the giant Council/5th Mechs are not in-game, at least not as targetable enteties, because of tech and combat issues.

Giant weapons are good, though.

As regards player characters, you'd have to become absurdly big to break bounding boxes. As I understand it, the problem is that power ranges aren't calculated based on a box, but rather based on raw distance between a central point on your character and a central point on the enemy, plus a bit of offset to account for character size. The problem with Rularuu the Ravager is that he's long and spindly, meaning that there's no good offset value to account for him. Too little offset and you won't be able to hit his head or the bottom of his skirt as they would technically be "too far" from his body. Too much offset and you start being able to hit him with melee attack fro 50 yards away.

That said, "pixel size" characters are indeed out of the question, for the simple fact that all player models share the same bounding box. That is to say, all player characters are equally tall when it comes to what height ceiling they can fit under and equally wide when it comes to what width door they can squeeze through. Pixel-size characters would constantly run into places where they should be able to walk through, but still can't because they're taller than they appear.
I don't see a reason why we can't go a bit more in the opposite direction, though. I've always wanted to see our characters able to grow at least as big as a Fake Nemesis. I mean, Fakes don't seem to have any trouble navigating terrain, even if it looks odd sometimes, and the game doesn't seem to treat them as being "too big." They are a fair bit bigger than even the biggest of us, though.

If we get too big, we won't be able to fit through doors, causing the devs to have to rework the entire City of universe. The world already caters to max height Huge folk, but I think if you get any bigger than that then whenever you walk through a door your head will go through the trim.

Asking for thrust vectoring is a bit too much Sam. At this rate we'll be lucky to see them as static costume parts.
What I don't undersand is why they cant have a scrip read the toon's costume info, and then automatically place the jet-pack at a point that looks good based on where the physique slider is. In short the current attachment point is in the middle of the body right? So place it at the point where its Attachment point + distance to back +/- Physique slider, so that it rests right on the back. But it may be that they can't control that. |

Of course, bounding boxes would have to remain the same. Which might be a little silly at some points in play, but its a price I think most who took this size would be willing to pay.

Of course, the crowd who got really small just to block line of sight less might complain that they don't get more l33t. * Shrugs
