Did the devs ever add voice chat?

No, they never added it. Maybe in the future, but not now

I hate voice chat in ANY game That is all

@Damz Find me on the global channel Union Chat. One of the best "chat channels" ingame!

If they added voice chat to this game, I'd have teams that expected me to listen to them.

No thanks. I prefer text.

Implementing voice chat directly into the game is usually just a huge waste of development effort so I hope they don't do it. People have their prefs, resist using in-game resources, and so it goes almost completely unused. See Planetside, Lord of the Rings, WoW, and so on.

So I hope they never give it a try!

The most any future game should do is try to implement a way to use the 3rd party voice systems without alt-tabbing or changing program focus.

Thanks for the replies, I prefer not to use voice chat. I wouldn't mind if they included it but only if you could turn it off.

This...all of this!

I think it would all depend how they impliment it, I've had the most fun in this game and other games when teaming with a 3rd party voice chat, on the flip side, using third party voice chat is a pain in the butt to use for anything other than an already existing group of people.

If they were to impliment it,
I would limit it to team chat(at least at first)
the current text chat features would remain
you would have the option to either enable/disable voice chat( in other words if you don't like it, and prefer to use text chat you can)
and there would be a mute option if you prefer to listion to the team channel, but prefer to communicate via text

Voice chat with friends is a plus.

Voice chat in a pug can be irritating. Ie., that one guy who thinks he's really cool and insisits on belching into the microphone (yes, I know someone like this in DDO).

Voice chat with friends = Skype
The rest of the time, text = superior

Or more specifically, the idiots that insist on using voice-activated rather than push-to-talk despite them apparently all suffering some degree of nasal inflammation 100% of the time, thus needing to <SNRRRRRRKKKKKK> every 3 seconds while breathing loudly through their mouths.

Or they decide to get into conversations with people in their house without shutting off the microphone... Relevant WKUK video.

Nope... and thank $deity.

(Latest Maclife or macworld... one of those two... reviewed going rogue, didn't like the lack of voice chat - but ugh, I'm *so* glad we don't have it. Put up with it for about 10 minutes in APB when that came out, killed it afterward.)

The can't police voice chat. It's tough to RP with voice chat. VCers will insist that the whole team must use VC and exclude non VCers from their teams which will create an atmosphere of have and have nots.

Not a problem today because VC is not part of the game, but make it a part and soon it will devolve into an XBox 360 CoD cesspool of 12 year old kids cursing at everyone.

I use Skype when I'm playing with friends. Used to use Teamspeak with my supergroup a few years ago.

And when I don't want to talk, I don't have to.

Seems fine how it is.

Adding voice chat to the game robs people like me of the excuse that we don't want to bother with Ventrillo or Team Speak or Skype or whatever. I have personally found that chatting with large groups of people over voice chat turns them all into "the class clown" and I don't want any of that. It's best of the game doesn't provide the imperative to do so anyway.

I was wondering. If there is a person being obnoxious on voice chat, can you just mute the person in question? I remember playing World in Conflict which has built in Voice Chat. If one on team was obnoxious, everyone else on team simply muted him so we wo'nt have to listen to him.

Oh, probably.

I was just remembering a thread on the official forums of another game that had integrated voice chat... where the consensus was that you did not have to talk on the voice chat, but you were expected to listen.

That's not something I'm interested in at all, and I can type quicker than I can talk, so...

Thank the 10,000 little gods that they never did.

This.

If there's an in-game option, it becomes expected that this is what everyone will use, whether one wants to chat or not, and/or regardless of whether one thinks there are better options for voice chat.

On top of that, it becomes more code the game devs either have to develop and maintain and/or license from some other producer, plus any added costs for infrastructure (depending on whether they created a peer-peer system like Skype or a client-server system like Ventrillo). I'd much, much, much rather have any costs for that effort or those resources folded into the existing things the devs already work on producing, and not adding voice chat.

I use Teamspeak with SG folks. It's nice in some ways -- much easier to chat when fighting, and to make a witty response before six other things scroll past making the wit obsolete. But it has undesirable features -- notably everyone talking at once, and of course anything you miss has to be repeated; you can't just scroll back through the chat log. And of course you miss everything that happens when you go afk for a drink or something because there's no log.

However, for some reason they made me an admin on the TS server, so when we get occasional trolls, I can kick them off the server and/or ban them permanently, which has proved handy on a few occasions.
