Well really, that's just a matter of opinion.
![]() One can easily say many of the powers in game look stupid, and yet still use them. Merc repelling down a cord from nowhere doesn't look stupid to you? |
GG, I would tell you that "I am killing you with my mind", but I couldn't find an emoticon to properly express my sentiment.

The physics are no more ludicrous then those involved in driving a man-sized human hundreds of feet into the air from the water using only human shaped legs. Or the physics being ignored when a man-sized human hits the water from a great height at a high rate of speed and a steep angle and bounces off the surface as if it was a trampoline.

Also bear in mind that Spidey has hastily created a web parachute on more than one occasion.
|
Secondly, yes, there is a reason to keep up with an idea even in the face of developer dismissal. Again, we saw that with Power Customization. Positron once stated in an interview (couldn't find it unfortunately, it was around 4-5 years ago if I recall) that PC just wasn't going to happen due to the resources it would require.

But even if you let "comic book magic" allow a kite-like object to lift someone UP off the ground for that to be imagined as the reasonable "workaround" for an anchorless swingline that EVERYONE in this game would use as a generic travel power is just plain stupid. Sorry, but it really is just very silly. The idea of explaining away realistic physics problems by falling back on the virtual crutch of "it's a comic book game so anything should be possible" is simply a lazy and insufficient way to try to justify this. I'm just glad the Devs of this game appear to also realize how dumb this is (probably by seeing how bad it looks in that "other" game) and have made the wise decision to not even try to bother with it. |
Frankly, "super science" and "Magi-tech" hooks that can apparently attach to nothing almost make more sense. I can think of several that are "serious" enough to at least compete with the Bat Grappling Hook, and that make as much sense as anything else in a setting where grown men run around in tights with their briefs on the outside of their clothes.
Stupid Science Skyhook 1: The hero discovers a way to generate stable portals, from any location, but other end is always in his lab, next to the machine that actually generates the effect. They're also limited to about two feet across. Aside from being useful for yelling through to get his shop assistant to hand him his lunch (which he forgot,) the inventor can't think of much this would be good for. Until it occurs to him to put something very large and very, very heavy next to the portal, and then invent a device capable of attaching and detaching to this object on command. Ta-da! Every time he fires the skyhook, it activates the portal generator. The grappling hook hits the anchor block which is immediately on the other end of the portal, providing a stable anchor to an object which is both too large and too heavy to pull through the opening. (And is also close enough to the opening to keep the bad guys from crawling through into his lab. Although this does have the disadvantage of preventing his assistant from being able to use the portal to hand him his lunch. Which the hero has forgotten. Again.) Stupid Science Skyhook 2: The inventor has discovered a way to generate a totally impenetrable force field, and to do so with a very very small device. The force field has several disadvantages though. First, it's totally immovable, relative to the surface of the most massive nearby object. (Which would normally be the surface of the planet.) Second, the forcefield is smaller than the device that projects it, or in this case about the size of a large marble. As a defensive item or a weapon, it's totally useless, but it makes a lovely pivot point for a skyhook. Magic Skyhook: It's *magic.* Which mean, pretty much by definition, that it works despite any rational reason to the contrary. |
I wasn't insinuating. The devs always said they would like to add power customization when they had the time and resources. What you should have used as your example was the devs position on Fitness. They originally said they'd rather get rid of Stamina altogether before they'd make Fitness inherent, but now we have inherent Fitness.

Ok, this can be simplified very easily;
-The Devs already know some people want swinglines.
-If we get them, we get them.
-If we don't get them, we don't get them.
-Until we DO get them, there's little point bringing it back up and people kvetching over it, because it's a know request.
Simples, eh?

You're the one twisting words. Whenever it was mentioned as a possibility it was always put in terms of "if", not "when". |
Before Positron's teaser image posted before the I16 announcement, there was never any hint that PC had any place on the schedule. |
Not as good an example, but it does serve as further proof that the devs can and do go back on "no" positions from time to time. And one is all it takes. |
Look, as a launch-day veteran I realize that it gets tiring at times to see a suggestion get made repeatedly. But no amount of weariness on our part can impose an obligation on others to stop making or supporting those suggestions, not even when the developers say no to them. We're allowed (and in fact, encouraged) to try to change their minds. |

It's odd that you guys seem to be forgetting the possibility of a Swinging pool power being constructed differently than previous Travel pools to accommodate this "Looks silly" thing which "sounds silly" to be honest
1: Zipline: You are given a targeting reticule similar to teleport powers. Click and your character is "knocked" to that location.
Can be used anywhere
Like the web zip in Spider-man 2 and Ultimate spider-man
2: Line yank( I know): A targeted knock.. forward attack that does minor damage.
3: Building swing: Your character jumps in the air, swings forward, and automatically swings again. Automatically sets your character to auto run, has a wider arc to turn with, and is fast, but can only be used in city environments or indoors.
Like the First spider-man Movie game, basically.
4: Swing attack: Like sheild charge, select a location/target and your character will swing up above the camera and come down with a kick at the target.
The idea that each travel pool can only have one "Real" travel power is limiting this set.
And I recall one of the devs saying that doing the swing motion would be non-trivial but relatively simple. The hard part would be overhauling every map in the game to include anchor points, and the stupid looking would have been doing it with out anchor points. But then I may be remembering a different time that the devs talked about Grappling travel powers.

sounds cool
Just for the sake of clarification when folks say anchor points are they talking about creating "physical" anchor points that have to be targeted while using the travel power or just having available anchor points in the vicinity that would explain where the terminating swing line is actually anchored?
Obviously having to target your anchor points would make for alot of fun as you would really have to learn "how to drive" but the terminating line version used by Champions Online is sufficiently fun and it also takes a bit of finesse for landings. ^ |

So because you don't want to discuss it no one can? If you don't want to participate, then don't, but don't try to prevent others who are interested from doing so.
It would take a lot of work or look stupid, not and. And I don't recall them ruling it out as a non starter, just stating that it would be very hard to prioritize due to the above logic. |
