The hard things I can do--- The impossible just take a little bit longer.

If numbers are so much more important than a teammate who is fun to play with, forget about the game altogether and go play with a calculator instead. -Claws and Effect-

gut reaction: getting Issue 19 out the door and just doing the Pocket D / Lady Winter event chewed up the development resources on hand.

As evidenced by today's patch, the problems with winter-lord's zone were not discovered until after the event went live; that was supposed to be something in the code that wasn't changed or modified at all from last year... and it still broke.

Something else to keep in mind is that adding in the icy lakes is not as easy as simply removing the lake geometry and shoving in the ice-skating geometry. From what we know of the existing zone structure frozen lakes would require completely different city zones to be built and downloaded.

It is very likely that the additional badge placements, contact placements, door mission placements, and all of the other advancements made to each zone have never been applied to the existing versions of the zones with the frozen lakes. Loading up the frozen-lake versions would more than likely break task forces like Numina TF, Positron TF, Citadel TF, and Synapse TF. It would also break the ability of players to find location badges, and / or prevent plaque completions. The Frozen-lake versions would likely also still contain hooks into the Dance Party instead of Pocket D, never-minding those maps likely lack the auction house, or the appropriate hooks into the train-station.

Now, if you know when the developers have had time to make copy the zones and implement the icy geometry changes to the most recent versions of those zones... go ahead and tell us.

Warning. Unnecessary snark is closer than it appears!

Q. Just wondering Posi, where are the new dance emotes we were told would come with GR?
A. Positron: Whoops, my bad.

1387 badges, and counting

Thursday.

Wait, that was the day scheduled for the office Nerf gun wars. Never mind.

Still, it is somewhat saddening for some of us that we only had the frozen lakes for that one year. Although i never experienced any issues during that original event i have read some accounts of characters being stuck in the ice when logging in.

Maybe someday we'll get ice again.

Not exactly. What WAS changed was the 'environment' surrounding the Winter Event. Specifically, there are now Rogue and Vigilante alignments. This seems to be what caused the problem.

What happened is simple. The game grew to big and changed to much.

Way back then we just had CoH Issue 2 to worry about. Since then they've added not only more zones to CoH but the zones in CoV and GR. Also all the old zones from CoH back then have been modified or completely rebuilt in the case of Faultline. We now have the Arena, Wentworth's, AE and the University.

I'm pointing this out because during that first winter event in 2004, with all the Winter Lord PLing, we were playing in completely revamped zones with different objects and textures. It would require a relatively huge effort to reskin all the zones for winter and the geometry to freeze the ponds over and define them as very low friction.

Since 2004 it was easier for the devs to give us events that didn't require such extensive changes.

Maybe they can consider a localized event some year around some of the larger ponds with a WL springing up a freezing over the nearby terrain.

If nothing else I'd love it if they used Croatoa since they already have snowy versions of the tileset used on some of the custom maps.

Thank you everyone at Paragon and on Virtue. When the lights go out in November, you'll find me on Razor Bunny.

I thought this was going to be a thread about the Slide power.

Never mind, carry on.

It worked when there was just CoH because we had a couple zones with only interior lakes. IF you remember, IndyPort water never froze, PI water never froze. NOW add in Rogue Isles, every zone is surrounded by water, no freezing there, not fair to villain side to not have an ice skating rink. Not to mention Praetoria...you see it is trickier that just turning a few hero only lakes to ice. Although most would have been ok with it, a few would have cried unfair.

Can I ask why you cant just slide around the ski chalet mini zone and throw snowballs there?

I suggest a neat thing they could have done is either in the AI building or the PvPArena, create a skating rink map, that all players could do is slide around and throw unlimited snowballs..that would be/could be fun.
