Lucas' Necromancy Masterplan.
I... But... Why... Gaaahhh!!!
Ah, damn you Lucas! You blew it all up! Damn you to hell!
Although an Orson Welles action figure would be pretty sweet, I have to admit.

While his storytelling and directoral efforts are lacking, the man knows how to make money. I will not be surprised if this turns out to be popular.

Oh and a convincing CGI in-their-prime double is one thing (and i'm not sure even Arnie in T:Salvation qualifies as that) - but CGI-acting?.... thats quite another thing!.
[EDIT]: Thinking about it... The only way this could yield anything remotely good performance-wise, was if you went the Avatar-tech route and mo-capped the actors faces to drive the CGI faces, but then i suppose the actor playing them would have to do a reasonable 'homage' or 'impression' performance?.

On the other hand, I guarantee that if this should come to pass, the first batch of resurrected movie stars will absolutely not get as much money as they ought.

see, normally id dismiss this story completely out of hand just by virtue of only being brought up by 'The Sun'. but it is Lucas, so it does seem possible that this is what he's doing, possible, but not likely.
Good lord, looks like Lucas is borrowing a page from the Critic animated series. Didn't Jay's Boss, Phil, attempt to do the same thing. Maybe if we're lucky a incurable disease will strike Lucas before this monstrosity of a bad idea sees the light of day.

If true, it should be relatively cheap, too. It makes some sense for the estates of those actors, because the right for, say, Alec Guiness, to appear in new films is not exactly in use at the moment.

Still this is the man that helped create THX, Pixar, ILM and others. Say what you want about his directing and writing skills, or lack of same, but the man does try to push technology to the next level and likes to show it off.
Only glanced at the article but how is this different from the Duke hawking beer?

I know he's looking at the "hey, wouldn't this be cool" factor for films and keeping an eye on the bottom line for business, but it shouldn't ought to be done, especially since a lot of actors never expected something like this would ever be possible and therefore didn't protect themselves. I assume a lot of people will just be excited by the fact that Alec Guinness will be able to appear in all the Star Wars films because Lucas will just digitize his appearance based on Bridge Over the River Kwai or whatever, but that doesn't make it right.

Howard Chaykin called this back in 1983 (Randall Flagg was fired from his TV show after being replaced by a computer simulacrum).

Obviously there's a lot of room to debate whether the "resurrection" of long dead actors in this way is good, bad or otherwise.
But here is something to consider: With advances in CGI happening all the time the likeihood that someone, somewhere will be doing this in the future is almost guaranteed. Frankly I'd rather have a person like Lucas with the backing of his industry-leading talent and technology spearheading this so that the quality of it can be as good as possible. If it's going to happen it might as well be really well done. *shrugs*

This will lead to stilted performances by already famous people or lively performances of nobodies... either way after the point this becomes main stream we will lose "stars" which somewhat worries me that directors may stagnate and not introduce new talent or we'll have a problem with people not getting the "rights" to use a dead person in their movie or have one char look too like another person...

Of course I remember catching a glimpse once of the Virtual Ed Sullivan show.....oy.

Mildly mouldy or basically skeletonized, a corpse is a corpse and the process of unearthing them for commerce is morally repellent.

quality is irrelevant when the subject is robbing graves.

If Lucas wants to jump in and try to at least make it look better than what other lesser people are going to come up with then that's better than nothing. If graves are going to be robbed then at least someone of the caliber of Lucas will be doing some of the robbing. I'd rather him do it than the folks over at SyFy for instance...

The SUN, people. You might as well buy into all of the Weekly World News reports of Batboy if you're gonna believe anything from the Sun.
I'll wait for this to be confirmed by the real news before I get worried.

But once again someone, somewhere will attempt to do it as the technology allows it to become easier and cheaper to do.
It's really only a matter of time at this point. *shrugs*

Didn't we learn anything from the terrifying "Weekend at Bernie's" movies? I mean, they're cautionary tales about letting the dead rest, right?
'Cause if they were comedies, I would have heard somone laughing.
Sure the Sun is questionable. Sure Lucas might not be involved with this.

Doesn't Jeff Bridges look awful young sometimes in that new Tron movie?
I honestly don't think these endeavours are thought through correctly by tech-wizards such as Lucas. Just because a CGI-model potentially looks just like a famous actor or actress, that does not mean the performance will be any good.
Where is the translation and actor's take on a role going to come from?, because thats the talent that comes direct from the actor's imagination. Thats not replicated along with their likeness, so basically all you have is an empty husk.
That husk maybe ok for walk-on silent parts like Arnie in T:Salvation, but what about a De-Niro or Pacino performance of a new role in a new film?, or is this tech supposed to be the holy grail to ensure sequel performances?.
I think this is what Lucas' plan is with licences like Indiana Jones which has enough of Ford's performance in the role for an animator to potentially extrapolate a horrible frankenstein-like CGI performance for many more sequels.
