It is an Internet Axiom that all unmoderated threads, if they go on long enough, will eventually degenerate into flamewars that often have little to nothing to do with the original topic.* And, as can be evidenced here, this still has a tendency to happen in a moderated environment!

The reason this happens is that there will be invariably someone who chimes in to nitpick about some inconsequential detail that somehow bothers them, and so instead of say, sending a private message to the original poster (or another replier) or even start a new thread, they will endeavor to derail the current thread to draw attention away from the intended topic. That's always a bit rude if I say so myself!

And no, I've never done it! Noooo... >.>

*(Unless the original topic itself was a controversial one. But even there, you will still have several smaller and unrelated flamewars beneath the main big flamewar! This is making me nostalgic for the Usenet; the modern alternatives just aren't the same!)

After you get your game back, I suggest burning it onto a DVD or saving to an external hard drive. If you somehow lose it again, uninstall anything leftover and run the installer. It will create a City of Heroes folder, but the folder won't actually have the game yet until you run the updater. To fool the updater, copy the folders from your backup into the new City of Heroes folder. Run the updater. The updater should verify what's in the folder and download/update as needed. This should prevent another 3gb download and will save time.

Truth be told, re-downloading it didn't take as much time as I thought it would. Only thing I really lost was a saved costume, but after looking at it again, I lost interest in it again. LOL Thanks for help, though!

How long did it take?

As Grouchybeast said, there are alternatives.

Also, I lost the game.
I think its meaning is less "to lose money", and more "to be cheated out of money" which is where it enters the derogatory territory.

I'm more surprised at the lack of offense over the usage of the phrase "Rule of thumb" and get a perverse kick out of women using it.

This is for all of you who lost the game due to this thread:

I'm as surprised as you! I didn't think it was possible.

What you are thinking of has been dismissed by a number of sources. Like the belief that "call a spade a spade" or "the pot calling the kettle black" are racial in nature. But popular belief or a good story sadly has a tendency to crowd out fact.

Most impressive. Thanks for the debunk!

And, honestly, I'm sick of the "Wah wah, stop being so PC!" response any time anyone says anything about a slur being used. Seriously, the "anti-PC" crowd have gotten far worse than the "PC" crowd ever was.
<not directed at the poster I'm quoting... just adding to the discussion>

Sure there's no gypses in the US... but there are readers of the boards from outside the US. Learning about those other cultures and showing them respect is how we, ourselves, grow and expand into more then we are. To throw away that opportunity to become a develop more broad view of the world is a mistake. To opendly defend the side of the person who causes offense by saying "its the victom's fault" is borish and obtuse. One might think "it doesn't matter. It doesn't hurt me or come back to haunt me." But what he is failing to realize is that, the self-important attitude displayed by that behavior is becoming viewed world-wide as very stereotypically American. We've all already been negatively affected by that global attitude toward the US. And it has gotten considerably worse in the last decade. Little comments may not seem to matter... but the type of problem we have as a country will only get fixed one relationship at a time.

I found this reference online, I give it as much or more credence as those claiming the word is offensive considering this cites a published work.

Just FYI.

----------------------

There is a lot of misinformation about the true origin of the word "gypped". It comes from the Greek word "gyp" for vulture, not from the word "gypsy".

Gyp (Jip, Gip, Gypsy, Gippo, Gypper, Gypster)

A person who cheats or swindles people. A trickster. A person who is not quite honest. Gyp is the Greek word for vulture. In the 19th century, the Universities of Cambridge and Durham in England provided servants, who attended one or more undergraduates. Students called the servants “gyps” because the gyps found many ways of obtaining ale and tips from them and preyed upon the students like vultures. Gyps made beds, ran errands, helped their young masters over the college walls late at night, and provided other services. Sometimes they ran away with everything they could lay their hands on.

Jordan Almond, Dictionary of Word Origins: A History of the Words, Expressions, and Clichés We Use, Citadel Press, New York, 1985, page 113.

Now you can enlighten anybody who thinks the word stems from Gypsy. It does not.

Here is part of the issue, however :

Considering that, how can you not be sure it wasn't also a slur towards gypsies? After all, nothing like be cleaver in your word choices and getting a two-for-one.

'gypsy' derives from Middle English 'gyptian', which in turn comes from Old French 'gyptien' (short for 'egyptian'), deriving from Latin 'aegyptius'. Gypsy itself is a pejorative exonym for the Romani people, used on the mistaken belief that the Romani originate from Egypt.

In the sense of swindling (or a person who swindles), 'gyp' does indeed derive from 'gypsy', in the same way 'jew' in the sense of defrauding derives from 'jewish', and 'welsh' in the sense of defaulting on a debt derives from the name of the Welsh people. Interestingly, 'gyp' can also mean other things (such as pain), with different etymologies, and it's also an abbreviation for the plant genus 'gypsophila' which includes the common Baby's Breath (US/Canada) aka Soap Wart (UK). The name of the genus describes the fact that the plant commonly grows in calcium-rich soil, such as gypsum.

Man, if there's one thing I love about these forums, it's how easily a thread derails into a completely unrelated topic.

Just going to re-iterate for the OP, everything you have, all your characters, booster packs, and other purchases, are stored on your master account. You can completely wipe your game and switch to a different computer, buy a new install disc, or whatever else, and you'll still have all your stuff when you log in.

All true for the things Smash listed. A few things are stored locally on your computer, though. Your 'player note' file is local. Any costume files you save are also local. Unpublished AE arcs are local.
