Jakeem Thunder is the first one I can think of. Natasha Irons as well as Black Lightning's daughters, Thunder and Lightning are the other ones that spring to my mind right away. They're all 2nd generation or legacy heroes.
And Luke Cage is a Marvel character :P

Firestorm and the future Aqualad are both black teens
The reason they made Robin and Kid Flash those characters rather than their proper characters is because they were the first to use those names.
Aqualad I can semi understand because they wanted to have a black hero, but didn't have any... they also have a new Aqualad in brightest day so it may end up being him in the long run or something.
I think it's *** backwards to say "we're going to create a story based on this... but instead of calling them all the same characters so these less publicly known characters get some time in the light they get shafted again"
And people wonder why I say Tim and Dick are probably the two most disrespected characters for their level of readership and fame.
Personally I would have rather we had a black aquagirl instead of a black aqualad.
I demand Robin be made Pakistani to add even more colour to the team.

If I recall correctly, the Aqualad in the show is based of the new Aqualad who was introduced in the Brightest Day ongoing right now, who happens to already be black.

Geoff Johns was called in during the planning phases of the show and saw the ideas for this new Aqualad. He liked the character so much, he pushed (and got) for him to be created in the comics as well.
So show made comic made show.

Honestly who cares. The character is likable and made me want to know more about him. That is all that matters to me.

I haven't read all the responses but....
I missed this show (never heard of it until tonight)...is there anywhere I can watch the pilot episode? I looked on hulu but that was to no avail....

Well you can't have an all white team, you are going to need some color. And green isn't the color they are looking for so they went with the black Aqualad. Yes it's a bit PC but that's Hollywood. They simply didn't want any of resemblance to the Teen Titans. I don't follow DC but other than Cyborg and Static, I can't really think of another black teen DC hero. Does Luke Cage have a son/sidekick?
