What to do?!?!?!?!?
Any scrapper/brute, cold, and kin would be a good setup.

so no dice on a tank? i have a couple 50 brutes ss/wp ss/fire ss/sd but didnt really think that they would be able to stand up to a fight such as RSF with only 3 people.
Well with the new going rogue and being able to switch sides there is alot of combos you can choose from and most will do well but if i were making a trio these are some of the options i would consider and since you want an aggro holder a tank would be best:
fire/fire tank
fire/kin corruptor
and any cold
that would be a pretty damage dealing trio and the cold sheilds would give ur fire armor a big boost.
invulnerability or will power/ either fire or super strength (i like aoe tanks for damage)
ill/rad controller (good tf toon and can stealth missions easily)
scrapper/brute/blaster (for damage)
these are just a couple choices you can pretty much make anything work, just post what you like and everyone will help you in the right direction
Three good players, playing characters they like.

You can play just about any combination of characters and make it work, and work well.
For example, my wife and I had a perma-duo of an Ill/Storm controller and a BS/DA scrapper that was beastly together, even though on paper they don't appear to synergize that well.
A Dark/Fire tank, a Fire/Cold controller, and a Fire/Mental blaster seem like they'd work well together. The tank has mezzing ability in their primary that will stack well with the controller's mezzes, the controller has the shields to help the tank with survivability, and the blaster can lay the hurt on the enemy from a distance.

I would have to say that any trio will work well. Will some work better than others, sure. But play what is fun for you and you will enjoy it more.
I do suggest at least one of you pick up a brute or scrapper (or even a tank).
If you really want to tank, "tanker" is hard to beat. Incredible durability, excellent aggro control. Won't do all that much damage, but you can outlast stuff. Really well-enhanced tankers exist who can stand next to an AV or GM, not use any click abilities, and not be in any danger.
Tanks are wonderful . . . as long as you understand and play your role. I have both an Invuln/Axe and Stone/Fire at 50, and it is very rare that they faceplant. Their role is to act almost like a controller whose control is aggro -- they pull the attention of the foes to themselves to protect their teammates. There is something special to the feeling of walking into a huge group of foes and taunting them to do their best . . . knowing that their best isn't good enough and you'll still be standing in the end.
Invuln is a great general purpose set. Good aggro with its toggle. It has heal in Dull Pain. Call Me Awesome has a great guide to help you take it to the softcap. It has a weakness to Psi, but that is manageable. It works great with any secondary.
Stone in Granite Armor is easily the most durable tank as soon as you take Granite at 32 and then can slot it up. It has huge amounts of both Defense and Resistance. But you pay a cost with reduced damage and recharge and a large penalty in movement. I recently was able to softcap mine to Smashing/Lethal in Rock Armor, which makes it much better as a damage dealer -- I can actually farm maps with mainly Smashing/Lethal foes. In Granite, I can handle pretty much anything in the game.
Shield is the new "darling" set. It is fairly easy to softcap to all three positions of Defense, plus you get a great Damage buff and a great offensive AoE power in Shield Charge. No self-heal and minimal Resistance, but it is very effective. (My Shield/Super Strength is level 39 currently.) If you want an offensive-minded tank, Shield/Fire is probably best.
If you want a tank who is pretty sturdy leveling up and easy to manage, try Willpower . . . but WP tanks are weak on aggro. It takes some work to get an hold the aggro for the team. I have a WP/Stone in the late 30s -- WP is a good set for a high endurance secondary, and good if you want to solo or play a Scranker.
Even better for a high endurance secondary is Ice Armor. No tank set is better at getting and keeping aggro than Ice. Plan on getting a lot of IO sets with typed Defense buffs, though. My Ice/Energy has been slowly leveling up since Issue 4, and is currently 43 -- unfortunately, the Energy Melee set is disappointing now-a-days with good but slow single target damage and minimal AoE damage.
LOCAL MAN! The most famous hero of all. There are more newspaper stories about me than anyone else. "Local Man wins Medal of Honor." "Local Man opens Animal Shelter." "Local Man Charged with..." (Um, forget about that one.)

If you want an offensive-minded tank, Shield/Fire is probably best.

This.
SD/fire or the old classic, ice/fire. For only three people, can tank anything you want, does gobs of damage for a tank, and both hold aggro like a gravitational anomaly. If you're worried about durability, have a buddy grab some buffs/heals.
But you won't need them much.

If you do make a Tanker, I'd suggest Willpower/Stone. /Stone has a lot of knockdown, which helps on mitigation, and Willpower is a solid set that gives extra recovery (always a good thing on a Tank) and gets tougher the more things you fight. Willpower does have a weaker taunt aura, but /Stone gives you Fault and Tremor to help attract enemies, and of course Taunt.
Cascade, level 50 Blaster (NRG/NRG since before it was cool)
Mechmeister, level 50 Bots / Traps MM
FAR too many non-50 alts to name
[u]Arcs[u]
The Scavenger Hunt: 187076
The Instant Lair Delivery Service: 206636
You could pick an /invuln scrapper.
Invinciblility would be enough of a taunt aura for aggro control on a team. If a buddy played a cold domination def/troller, between his shields on the scrap and frostwork you'd have a pretty incredible duo. Leaving the 3rd spot open for a free choice, say a damage dealer or more buffs/debuffs.
You don't NEED a tank to maintain aggro control. But ill echo the sentiment of others, any 3 ATs can run roughshod on 90 percent of the content in this game
My favorite combo is Faceplant/DebtCap with the TeamWipe Ancillary

Since the OP said they want to tank, and I'm going to assume while generally playing with two friends, they will team with others, and the OP wants to tank say the STF and LRSF...
IOed to the gills SS/WP Brute or WP/SS Tanker! With for serious staying power, I'll suggest the Tanker.
More hit points just makes WP that much better.
If you want to do a bit more damage, or would prefere to have your attacks sooner though, go with the Brute.
BrandX Future Staff Fighter
The BrandX Collection
I have 3 Tanks that I got to 50 of different builds;
1) Willpower/War Mace (modeled after Thor)
Tough as nails, does nice damage and endurance is NEVER a problem.
I used to farm lev 53 Maltas (x8) with Sappers, Bosses and the whole 9 and had a LOT of fun while doin that back in the day
2) Fire/Fire/Pyre Mastery and it was just a DAMAGE MACHINE
Would be even better if I ever bothered getting some IO sets in it... but oh well
3) Willpower/Super-Strength/Energy Mastery
I made it basically for the look and feel of it.
Pretty tough and did some nice damage.
One of these days I need to treat it nicer with some sets also.
All of them fun.....
all of them are awesome solo....
on teams of 3 or 8.
Didn't matter to me

Infinity & Freedom Servers!
So hears the dilema, im a 36 month vet and never really set foot on blue side. Currently im working on a couple heroes and actually enjoying it, but what im trying to do is make a character that will be able to take aggro (tank) on TFs. I also have a couple buddies of mine that are going to join me, i just have no clue what would work out the best as a 3 person team. Anyone have any ideas? Doesnt really matter what side (blue/red), im just trying to find a kick a** trio that will be awesome together. Any help is greatly appreciated!
