I love me some robots.

Obviously you all can tell I love me some robots news and since my friend likes to send me links to them, I share with you..

I present to you the newest: The robotic nurse. So close to making a Cylon skinjob I can taste it.

From what I was told she is a prototype for the new line of robotic nurses for the elderly and the handicapped on a personal level to alleviate loneliness and the depression.

I'll be glad when one of two things happens.

1) Roboticists finally decide to stop trying to make their robots look like a live human

or

2) Roboticists advance things to the point that their androids leave the uncanny valley far behind.

Now, if you'll all excuse me, I'm going to go over there to be thoroughly creeped out for a few hours.

Goodbye, I guess.

Clearly part of a Nemesis plot.

If I was an old man with that kind of robot, I'd feel scared for my life. It's just so ... uncanny. In fact, I'd have a heart attack daily running into that thing sitting there.

EDIT: Also, dear Japan: less creepy humanoid robots, more giant battle mechs! C'mon!

It's a Telepresence Robot. The idea is one of these will be in an old persons home and a trained human health professional will log in to the robot and interact with the homeowner.

Its a robot but its also a glorified phone.

It's when technology gets to this point

I'm gonna be super freaked out.

The way (no offense to the Japanese) are developing robotics I would not be surprised when we see those or skin-jobs. Like I said my friend keeps me up to date on this stuff, I hear Korea is getting into the robotic race as well.

I think it's pretty safe to say the people who are working on robot/android technology are racing as fast as they can away from your Option #1 and trying to get to your Option #2 as fast as possible. At the rate they are going we might have to "suffer" with a few more decades of the uncanny valleys, but eventually we will get past that, for better or worse.

You have to hand it to the Japanese. Not only are they clever with the robot technology in general, but they are also masters of indirection and camouflage. Sure this "nurse" robot has potential to be helpful in a health/hospital setting but think about the bigger picture going on here. This kind of robot is also advancing the technology that will allow for better telepresence-based sexbots.

Now obviously it would be hard to get money for research if your main public goal was sexbot development so by using the cover of a "publicly acceptable" purpose like making a nurse robot you can get away with a lot of basic research you'd need for more "naughty" purposes later on.

You have to remember where robot technology is ultimately going: The two main types of robots people have always wanted are sexbots and terminators. These two types of robots will satisfy humanity's most primitive desires. I think in the future there will be all sorts of robots doing all sorts of things. But out of all the types that will be developed the two types we can pretty much be guaranteed to have will be sexbots and terminators.

I figure there's going to be a bad scene when an elderly person who isn't fully aware starts freaking out due to a robot nurse. But hey, when I'm on my death bed please let me be interacting with some machine versus another human who has actual empathy for me. *rolls eyes*

But here's the irony of that: depending on your age of course by the time you're on your death bed there could very well be "machines" that will actually feel empathy for you.

The Technological Singularity is going to change everything.

Camouflaged to some people maybe.

But then, I automatically assume that everything the Japanese do or invent has some connection to some sexual fetish.

Well that was basically my point: It's always safe to assume any advance in robotics (especially Japanese robotics) will be applied to the future of sexbots in some form or fashion.

I'm not saying that's a bad/derogatory thing in the least. I'm just suggesting that it's something to keep in mind whenever you read about some kind robot news that seems otherwise "boring" or "pointless". None of it is ever pointless...

In two and a half minutes all she does is open her mouth, nod her head and look surprised.

You say Robot Nurse's design is to alleviate loneliness and depression?
Um, yeah, I can see a market for that.

Baby steps towards the Technological Singularity my friend.
Every baby step gets them that much closer.

The machines really are going to have an easy time controlling us as long as we keep thinking these little "pointless" advances are meaningless or silly...

Could not have said it better. You'd da one (Would say man, but I learned the hard way on that one ).

I love the way everything in this, the all-so futuristic 21st century, from the development of a global web of communication to cutting-edge android research is still driven by undertones of Mankind finding new ways to the age-old pursuit of 'getting his leg over'.

Seriously hilarious !.

"To the stars !" [add echo and reverb]

Speaking of the stars this idea of yours about what "drives" Mankind reminds me of a quote from Futurama's Zapp Brannigan:

"We have failed to uphold Brannigan's Law. However I did make it with a hot alien babe. And in the end, is that not what man has dreamt of since first he looked up at the stars?"

I think something westerners overlook when viewing Japaneses advancement in robotics is the role Shinto plays in the overall acceptance of robots in that society. The Shinto religion, in very general terms applies spirituality to all things. Japanesse make the leap to machines having souls rather easily.

I'm not to sure if Taoism and Confucianism make those leaps so quickly and strongly but that whole region is moving towards an integration of robotics into daily life whereas the United States is really spending the majority of money in robotic developmental in weapon systems. I have to wonder if in say 200 years Hinduism evolves to the point where being reincarnated as an artificial machine is viewed as the natural cycle of life.

Super interesting book on the subject is Wired for War by PW Singer.

where shall i put some windex for your house anyhow, while memories of roujin z are amusing me in this context, japan does have a aging population and a low birth rate(i offered to help) many senior homes in the us even are struggling to find qualified care that will work at cost efficient wages, while in general japan is one of the forefront countries in robotics the added pressure of the population issue would make this a useful test market for the advancing technology.

I think it's quite obvious that the what the builders really wanted to make was a sexy elite robot female sexy ninja cyborg sexy assassin droid, but it was easier to get funding if they said it was a nurse to help care for the elderly - so the only visible signs of their real intentions are the blank, emotionless staring eyes of a sexy blank emotionless sexy killer android sexy machine.
